Who’s Who About the MusicFrom the youthful contemplation of Schubert to the mature exuberance of Bach…

Schubert Mass No. 2 in G, D 167

Born in Vienna, Franz Schubert was a child prodigy who later studied under Salieri. In 1815, then 18-year-old Franz produced almost 140 songs, six operas and operettas, two symphonies, two piano sonatas, a string quartet and trio, and other various chamber and church music.

During one week in March of that prolific year, Schubert composed his second mass, this lightly-scored choral composition requiring only a string orchestra and organ with soprano, tenor, and baritone soloists; intended for a performance in the parish church of Lichtental, it is not confirmed that the performance ever took place.

The Mass in G begins with a melodic Kyrie, soars through the Gloria, softly but implacably states its Credo, and humbly pleads for peace in the final Agnus Dei.

Schubert’s music embodied the lyrical, dramatic and romantic notions bridging the classical and romantic periods, yet he was not widely recognized during his lifetime. Like the bulk of his oeuvre, the Mass in G was not published until after his early death at the age of 31. Schubert’s later revision of the mass that included trumpet and timpani parts was discovered in the 1980s.

Schubert was not devoutly religious. It is interesting to note that he omitted the Latin phrases for “I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church” and “I expect the resurrection.” Although some publishers reinserted both phrases, the version being sung today is Schubert’s.

Bach Magnificat in D Major BWV 243

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Magnificat is a musical setting of the biblical canticle from Luke. It is Mary’s song of praise upon meeting her cousin Elizabeth. Traditionally a part of the liturgy in daily vesper services, it was retained in the Reformation by Martin Luther, who translated it to German.

Bach was Kantor at Leipzig when wrote his first Magnificat (243e) in both Latin and German. It included Christmas carols as well for the season.

Ten years later Bach wrote the second version, this time entirely in Latin. The Magnificat in D is the first major liturgical composition on a Latin text by Bach, and is the most-performed version. It is scored for five vocal parts (two sopranos, alto, tenor and bass), and a Baroque orchestra including trumpets and timpani.

About performing this work, the conductor Robert Shaw said the Bach experience “…was an exuberance of animation and a complexity of utterance…”

Robyn Rocklein, Mezzo-SopranoRobyn Rocklein, a Nebraska native known for her vibrant and flexible voice, has appeared as a soloist in England, Austria, Germany, and throughout the U.S. Robyn has performed with Arizona Opera, St. Petersburg Opera, Opera Tampa, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, and St. Andrew’s Bach Society. She has also performed with the Kronos Quartet, Barry Manilow, John William’s Star Wars in Concert, and Columbia Artists’ Lord of the Rings Symphony. Robyn was a finalist in the Meistersinger Competition (2009) in Austria and the Charles A. Lynam International Vocal Competition (2008), and has won numerous competitions in the U.S. She holds a D.M.A. in vocal performance from Arizona State University, and is an Adjunct Professor at the Ringling College of Art and Design.

Todd William Donovan, Bass-BaritoneTodd has been described by critics as a singer full of confidence, dominating the stage. He is known for his powerful and resonant voice and expressive acting. He is comfortable both on the opera and musical theater stage where he has performed throughout the United States. He also has been the bass-baritone soloist at the Classical Music Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria for the past six seasons. He has won numerous competitions, including the first-place Oxnard $12,000 Gold Medal Award and the Johnny Mercer Award in the American Traditions Competition at the 2009 Savannah Music Festival, singing in multiple music genres including songs from the American Songbook, jazz, musical theater, pop and opera. Tampa Bay Times Critic John Fleming has described Todd’s performances as “rich, passionate and powerful; A solid performer with splendid acting throughout, bringing down the house.”

Adam Bielamowicz, TenorAdam has been the tenor soloist with the Central Florida Bach Festival and Gloria Musicae since 2014. He has played feature roles with Sarasota Opera, and founded the Qol Quartet. The tenor’s 2013-2014 season took him to Carnegie Hall, where he performed Tulbek in Richard Strauss’s Feuersnot with The American Symphony Orchestra. In 2013, he received numerous accolades for his Wagnerian debut in the role of the Steersman. Perhaps the most eloquent summary of Adam’s versatility appears in Opera Today’s review of The Flying Dutchman: “Adam Bielamowicz’s appealing tenor had sweetness and clarion punch as [the Steersman].” A native Texan, Adam enjoyed his Houston Grand Opera debut as the Burgess in Britten’s Peter Grimes, and was the featured tenor soloist in three choral masterworks with the Lubbock Symphony: Mendelssohn's Elijah, Handel’s Messiah, and Mozart’s Mass in C minor. Adam has a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Texas Tech University. He and his wife live in Sarasota.
