DEACON’S BENCH
My Friends and Fellow Parishioners,
The following is taken from the website: Fathers for Good, an initiative for men by the Knights of Columbus. “The Fourth Sunday of Lent
(March 18th) is called Laetare Sunday, when the Church takes a bit of breather from Lenten practice and opens Mass with the Entrance Antiphon,
“Rejoice, Jerusalem … Be joyful, all who were in mourning!” – taken from Isaiah chapter 66.
To get a deeper insight into this “Rejoice” Sunday, we asked Father Matthew Ernest to explain some of the theology and practice related to the
celebration. Father Ernest was ordained in 2004 for the Archdiocese of New York, where he serves at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scarsdale. He
holds a doctorate in Liturgy from The Catholic University of America and has assisted in the preparation of the new translation of the Roman Missal.
Fathers for Good: Where does the name “Laetare Sunday” come from?
Father Ernest: Laetare Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent, takes its name from the Latin word which begins the entrance antiphon (introit)
for that day. Laetare means rejoice, and this Sunday is marked by a relaxation of the penitential character of the Lenten season. In church, flowers may
be used to adorn the altar on this day, and the organ may be played more fully.
FFG: Are we supposed to "Rejoice!" in the middle of Lent?
Father Ernest: Indeed we are! On this Sunday, we look with expectation to the great Solemnity of Easter for which we have been preparing
ourselves as a Church during the Lenten season. By its anticipation of the joy of Easter, Laetare Sunday is meant to give us hope and encouragement as
we slowly progress towards the Paschal Feast.
FFG: Did the priests used to wear pink rose vestments on this Sunday?
Father Ernest: Not only did priests used to wear rose vestments, but they still may! On both Laetare Sunday and Gaudete Sunday (the Third
Sunday of Advent), a priest may wear rose vestments. The color rose is used as a sign of the joy which characterizes these two Sundays. The use of rose
vestments probably stems from an ancient papal tradition of blessing golden roses which would be sent to Catholic heads of state in Europe on the Fourth
Sunday of Lent.”
It is winter; people living in our midst are cold and hungry. You have the opportunity to help. Our brothers and sisters need our help. Saint Mother
Teresa once said, “We should not serve the poor like they were Jesus. We should serve the poor because they are Jesus.” As you know, the St. Vincent de
Paul Society is always looking for canned goods, cereal, and pasta to help feed those in need. You can bring canned goods, etc. with you to Mass and
leave them in the back of Church. If it is inconvenient for you to bring groceries to church, we have Poor Boxes in the back of all of our Churches. All
money collected in these boxes goes directly to our Society. Our St. Vincent de Paul Society opens its doors to give help three times a week to those who
are in need. Please check in your pockets and see if you do not have some money to share.
Thank you!

Bereavement Ministry Bereavement Ministry—Am I going crazy?”
Am I going crazy? This is a question often asked during the journey
through grief. Come join us and find others who are traveling along this
often painful and confusing path. Share stories of hope and find peace with
those who understand and empathize with what you are experiencing.
Please come join us at the St. Agnes Meeting Room. Meetings are held on
the first and third Mondays of each month from 7 pm to 8 pm. For more
information, please call Bill and Anne Fazio 410-378-2092.

Bible Study of Mary, Wednesday evenings 7:00 pm at St. Agnes.

would like more details.
The Prayer Shawl Guild meets on the first Tuesday of each month from 1
PM to 3 PM at the St. Agnes Meeting Room. We hope to offer warmth and
the message of God’s blessings to those in need of comfort. The Prayer
Shawl Ministry uses yarn to create prayer shawls to comfort and warm
those in need. For instance: those working through cancer treatment, sig-
nificant illness, the loss of a loved one--people who would benefit
from being wrapped in prayers and love. Members of this ministry will knit
and crochet special shawls and blankets that will receive a pastoral bless-
ing. Each shawl or blanket begins and ends with prayers and blessings for
the recipient. For further information regarding the Prayer Shawl Guild,
please call Anne Fazio at 410-378-2092.
Please contact Marie Sypolt at the Parish Office to request a prayer shawl
for someone in need.

Mass attendance & winter weather
Message to Parish from Vision Committee:
The Good Shepherd Parish Vision Committee has been in effect
since 2016, in accordance with the Sustaining Hope for the Future
capital campaign. The parish completed the 3 year funding effort
successfully from 2015 through 2017. The Vision committee contin-
ues to meet monthly with representation from each church in our
parish. The primary goal of this committee is to ensure the best uti-
lization of our parish facilities in accordance with key parish factors
including: maintenance, attendance, future priest availability, edu-
cation requirements, and evolving local population.
Last winter at this time, we had vision planning sessions at each
church to gather your feedback. We then mapped goals in accord-
ance with that feedback, most notably the desire to consolidate our
parish assets, possibly into a new location for all parish activities.
In coordination with our planning partner, Bernardon Associates,
we are still pursuing the best options for all goals. Bernardon has
assisted us with gathering our goals into the visual model, allowing
for pending factors to become clear for the parish. As many of you
know, over the years we have explored with Father John Abrahams
the potential utilization of “Abrahams Acres” in Port Deposit for
this purpose. In cooperation with Father John, this was determined
not to be feasible. We are thankful to him for his efforts to reach a
final decision, and for his incredible support to this committee
through the process.
The Vision committee will continue to pursue our parish goals as-
sertively, with the assistance of Bernardon when required. Next
steps include exploring potential land donations and sites, and fur-
ther cooperation with our Building & Maintenance and Finance
committees to clarify our best options for efficiency going forward.
Feel free to reach out if you have questions, input, or wish to join
our efforts.
“Canon law (1247) states that on Sundays and other days of obligation,
the faithful are obliged to participate in the Mass. However, the law
does not expect the impossible nor can the fulfillment of the obligation
according to the norm of th law be burdensome or dangerous.
There is no obligation to attend Mass if weather and/or road conditions
are unsafe or make travel dangerous or difficult, and if one is unable to
get out of their driveway or parked space.
Those persons who are unable to attend Mass under such conditions
may view the celebration of Mass on television, depending on local tele-
vision schedules. Some time should be given to private or family prayer
in order to sanctify the Lord’s Day.
Prayers should be offered for those affected by the storm.”
FLOCKNOTE is a new service that our parish is using to
communicate with parishioners. Using Flocknote, we are
able to send text messages as reminders of events or notify
you of emergency closings. You may also join different
groups, such as parish committees and ministry groups, to
receive information about what is happening.
You may also sign up to receive emails through Flocknote,
but we will also continue to use our current system of send-
ing emails. You may Text to Join by sending the message
goodsheep to 84576.

ner, and sign up online https://17337 sites ecatholic.com/
