As we learn from the Judge today, persistence has its rewards and persistent prayer has its blessings. Jesus, who gives us this wonderful insight in the parable heard today, is asking for us to be persistent in our faith, hope, love and prayer. As we journey toward our new future, we need this persistence as we become one new parish. We will have a new name and become one great family with two churches, but we will still have those essential gifts we need on our earthly journey: word and sacrament.

We will continue to be faithful listeners to the word of God in Scripture. We will write that word on our hearts as we become a living Gospel for all people to here. Focused on our foundation in Christ, we will continue to be a warm, welcoming family of faith who live that faith in hope and joy through acts of loving prayer and service.

We will continue to be a Eucharistic people who see, in this great Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, our mission, our life and our identity. We will celebrate all of the Sacraments with reverent devotion and fervent prayer. We will grow in God’s grace in each and every celebration of the Sacraments. We allow God to encounter us where we are in life and gently guide us as to where he needs us to be.

Now is a time of prayer for us. Pray for a spirit of loving cooperation in this process of coming together. Pray in thanksgiving for all of the gifts our community will bring to this new beginning. Pray in hope for a great and glorious future as we celebrate this family, united in Word and Sacrament. Pray with joy that we will always have these pillars of our faith. We often call Lent the acceptable time because of the special nature of that season of renewal. This too is an acceptable time for us. As we transition, we will be renewed with energy, grace and wisdom. We will be gifted with God’s grace. We will persist in doing great things with and for each other and most especially with God’s gracious help, we will do great things in His holy name.

Financial support of your parish school - a rare but URGENT opportunity

Pennsylvania has a program that allows individual taxpayersindividual taxpayersindividual taxpayersindividual taxpayers to convert their State income tax dollars into financial aid dollars for private schools, including Catholic schools. It is called the Education Improvement Tax Credit, or EITC. For STM, the need is great as the parish subsidy of the school is at an unsustainable level. EITC contributions serve to reduce the school deficit, and therefore the subsidy.

The program requires that donors make a two-year commitment to the program in exchange for a 90% PA tax credit. $3,000 would be $300 net out-of-pocket, $5,000 would cost $500, etc. There is no upper limit on your contribution amount.

There are two ways to participate in the EITC program, based upon annual income of $115,000 or more.

Individuals with net worth of $1MM (excluding home value) OR annual income of $200K/joint annual income of $300K can participate in the Diocesan program.

Individuals below that threshold can enroll through the Central Pennsylvania Scholarship Fund, which has no income requirement but does have a minimum participation level of $3,500 rather than $3,000. This option makes sense for anyone earning about $115,000 or more annually. All the money is directed back to STM. Mike Freker, the Planned Giving Officer at the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh can help individuals enroll this way.

The deadline for joining is October 25.The deadline for joining is October 25.The deadline for joining is October 25.The deadline for joining is October 25. Please note that you are required to pay your annual commitment in full when signing up for the program. The 90% credit will be issued after you file your 2019 PA income tax in the Spring of 2020.

To sign up, or ask any technical questions, contact Michael Freker, Planned Giving Officer at the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh (412.456.3085, [email protected]). Jay Shock, from the STM Fundraising Committee can be reached at [email protected].

STM Bok Discussion Group The Lightkeepers’s Daughters by Jean E. Pendziwol is the topic for the Nov. 11, meeting of the STM Book Discussion Group. The novel is set against the backdrop of Lake Superior and provides the view for twin sisters Elizabeth and Emily in their youth. But Elizabeth in her late years finds her father’s journals and the past suddenly becomes the present for her. Family mysteries are uncovered as she shares the journals with Morgan, who is a delinquent teenager doing community service. Together they discover the importance of family and the possibility of second chances.

Meetings are the 2nd Monday of the month in the Family Life Center from 10 A.M. until noon. All are welcome.

AROUND THE PARISH Parish News & Events

Lamb of God Chapel: Things you may be thinking: I want to visit Our Lord in Lamb of God Chapel, but I have never been in there, and I am afraid of offending someone, or feeling awkward. What do I do?

It is not surprising that you feel drawn to the chapel. Our Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, Who died for you, rose again, and lives with us Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist, is waiting for you to come and spend a little time with Him!

Of course, it is important to maintain silence. The chapel is a place of prayer and where we deepen our Holy Communion with the Lord.

When you walk in, the holy water font is on your right, and the altar is on your left. Bless yourself and genuflect toward Our Lord Who is present on the altar. You can touch one knee to the ground, or church tradition encourages both knees when the Eucharist is exposed. People with injured knees can just bow. This just acknowledges that you are in the presence of God.

Visitors do not need to use the touchscreen. Find a place to sit or kneel. You can pick up reading materials on the bookshelf, but those are just meant to help you move into prayer.

There is no one specific way to adore the Lord.

How you proceed here is as individual as you are. You can offer prayers of praise and thanksgiving, pour out your heart’s deepest concerns, bring up people that are in need of His help, pray a Rosary or Chaplet of Divine Mercy, or read the scriptures. But, be sure and just give the Lord some silent time just to love you, fill you with the graces He has prepared for you, and speak to your heart.

When you are ready to leave, just bless yourself again and genuflect.

Don’t expect to necessarily feel anything. Yet, know by faith that the Lord has given you extra graces through your visit with Him. You may notice that you have more patience or wisdom in dealing with a difficult situation. And please keep coming back!

You may check out the parish web site for more information on the chapel or to sign up for your own weekly holy hour. Visit https://stm-sjc.org/adoration.

Moon to Shine on it, for the glory of GOD gives it light and the LAMB is its LAMP”

Important information Kate Hanley will no longer be the Safe Environment Coordinator for St. John Capistran Church. The efforts have been combined with St. Thomas More and the new Safe Environment Coordinator for SJC & STM is Susie Levitt. You can contact Susie at 412-833-0031 or [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

WORSHIP Hymnals As you may know we are getting new hymnals for St. John Capistran Church. There is still time for you to have a hymnal in memory of a deceased loved one or in honor of someone dear to you. We only have 500 hymnals available. For a donation of $25 you can have a bookplate placed in the hymnal with your request. Fill in the envelope (provided at the entrances of the church) for each book and put it in the collection basket, deliver to the rectory, or place it in the mail. Thank you for your support!
