From Father Stephen Buting
Every small Italian town has some ancient or medieval story that gives it prominence. Most often it involves some sort of miracle because these places have a long history of being Catholic. The town of Orvieto, a frequent day-trip from Rome, is no exception to this rule. Back in 1263, a German priest was on a pilgrimage to Rome to strengthen his faith. He was pious, but struggled to believe that Our
Lord was truly present in the Blessed Sacrament that he consecrated each day. In the church of St. Christina in the nearby town of Bolsena, at the moment that he pronounced the words, “This is my body”, blood began to seep from the Host onto the corporal and the altar stone beneath it. The priest was obviously confused, and asked to be taken to the city of Orvieto, where the pope was living at the time. After an investigation into the matter, the pope welcomed the new relics into the Cathedral of Orvieto in procession with pomp and circumstance. This was the first known Eucharistic procession in the Catholic Church. The next year he asked Saint Thomas Aquinas, who was living in Orvieto doing research, to compose some hymns and proper chants for the Mass for this feast which he was about to create. Thomas dutifully responded to this request, and some of the most beautiful music in our Catholic tradition was created. The Pange Lingua (Sing my Tongue) is sung every Holy Thursday as the Blessed Sacrament is processed from the church to the altar of repose at the end of the service. The final two verses are known as the Tantum Ergo Sacramentum and are prayed at every Holy Hour as a sign of devotion to the Eucharist. The events surrounding this miracle suggest that Our Lord knew what He was doing when He appeared to this doubting German priest in 1263. In the prior century, there had been growing controversy about whether or not the Eucharist was truly the Body and Blood of Jesus. Two extremes were proposed and eventually rejected. One stated that the body of Jesus (the same that was born of the Virgin Mary and died on the Cross) was literally and physically present on the altars of the world at the same time. The opposite stated that Jesus was only present as a symbol in the sacrament. Neither of these captured the way in which Christ is truly present in the Eucharist, not in a crude material way but in a sacramental way. We do not eat the literal Body and Blood of
Christ when we receive communion; that would be eating human flesh and would be cannibalism. Besides, everyone with eyes to see and taste buds knows that the Eucharist looks and tastes like bread and wine. Yet we don’t just go to the other extreme and see it all as just a symbol. Sacraments both contain and give the grace they symbolize. It cannot be solely a symbol; there must be a reality beneath that has the power to give us a share in divine life. This reality, hidden beneath the appearances of bread and wine, is Christ’s true substantial presence. Substantial means that the reality, the substance, we acknowledge when we see the Host is truly Jesus, even if we do not see Him on the level of appearances. Jesus appears in this manner, as simple food, because He wants to be the daily bread we ask for in the Our Father. He wants to dwell in our churches to be present to His People in a beautiful and intimate way. Whenever we walk into a Catholic church, we know that we are home because of the tabernacle and the red light beside it. The truths of our faith that were clarified during the Middle Ages give us the confidence to say that whenever the priest prays the words, “This is my Body” “This is the chalice of my Blood”, the bread and wine we have offered are transformed, in their very essence, into the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. The difficult work of theology and the controversy that the Church went through back then benefit us immensely today. We are called to explore this mystery of our faith for ourselves to believe more deeply, but we don’t have to be pioneers or trailblazers. We have the benefit of two millennia of faith-filled men and women who, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit and the use of their minds, have given us the foundations for our belief. For further study, I’d recommend reading Catechism #’s 1322-1419 or https://bit.ly/167sHTc. God bless! -Father Stephen Buting

Why so many envelopes? The parish office has received many questions about the new offertory envelopes that are being mailed to Saint Frances Cabrini members. As Father Nathan mentioned in a letter that was sent with the new offertory envelopes, the parish has started using a new envelope service provider – Our Sunday Visitor. Although more envelopes are being sent, the cost to the parish for envelopes has decreased. Please feel free to use the envelopes to make weekly, monthly, quarterly, bi-annual, or annual contributions – whatever works best for you. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we continue to transition from our previous envelope provider.
