THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS The Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (October 5-19, 2014) ended last Sunday. The Church and the news media have done much coverage of it. But what exactly is the Synod of Bishops?

What is the Synod of Bishops? The Synod of Bishops is a permanent institution of the Catholic Church. It was established by Pope Paul VI in 1965, shortly after the close of the Second Vatican Coun-cil, to continue the spirit of collegiality and communion that was present at the Council. The Synod is an assembly of bishops from around the world who assist the Holy Fa-ther by providing counsel on important questions facing the Church in a manner that preserves the Church's teach-ing and strengthens her internal discipline. The Synod of Bishops meets at the request of the Holy Father, when he considers it necessary or opportune to consult with the world's bishops. General Assembly of the Synod of Bish-ops is called "Extraordinary" when it is convened to deal with matters "which require a speedy solution" (Code of Canon Law #346, §2) and which demand "immediate at-tention for the good of the entire Church."

The Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops

The theme of the Third Extraordinary General Assem-bly of the Synod of Bishops is: The pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization. Pope Francis has determined that the work of this Synod of Bishops is to take place in two stages, forming a single organic unity. In the III Extraordinary General As-sembly in 2014, the synod fathers will thoroughly examine and analyze the information, testimonies and recommenda-tions received from the particular Churches in order to re-spond to the new challenges of the family. The Ordinary General Assembly (October 4-25, 2015), representing a great part of the episcopate and continuing the work of the previous synod, will reflect further on the points discussed so as to formulate appropriate pastoral guidelines. On October 18, 2014 the Synod of Bishops on the family agreed on a final document more clearly grounded in traditional Catholic teaching. Yet the assembly failed to reach consensus on especially controversial questions of Communion for the divorced and civilly remarried and the pastoral care of people with homosexual orientation. (For more information, see www.vatican.va)

Toward the 2015 Synod The final report values more the experience of Chris-tian families than did the midterm report, and put in action many suggested changes. Yet, it cannot be considered a definitive document: the final report will function as a “working document” for the 2015 Synod of Bishops, which is considered the second part of unique synodal path on the family. Only after that will the Pope issue a post-synodal apostolic exhortation, which will shed light on how the Church is called to face the challenges of the family today.

OLPH FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS DAYS Because All Saints Day falls on a Saturday this year, we are dispensed from the normal obligation to attend Mass on this Holy Day. All Saints Day remains, however, a marvelous festival in our Church! This celebration and its beautiful liturgy focus upon our wonderful belief in the “communion of saints” and on God’s plan for our own eternal glory. At OLPH we will celebrate All Saints Day with a spe-cial Eucharistic Liturgy scheduled for Saturday, No-vember 1, at 8:15 a.m. All members of the parish are invited to this joyful celebration. On Sunday, November 2, we will celebrate All Souls Day, in which we remember those dear to us who have passed from this life into the next. To include the names of your loved ones in the intentions of the All Souls Novena, please use the envelopes in your packets or use the envelopes available in the church on the weekend of October 25-26.

GIVING THANKSGIVING 2014 ANNUAL COMMUNITY EVENT

Every year, we all give thanks. This Thanksgiving, let’s focus on the giving. Last November, 2,000 local Santa Clarita residents enjoyed a free Thanksgiving din-ner in Old Town Newhall. For the last nine years, our neighbors have organized on Thanksgiving Day to help those less fortunate in our community. This year, OLPH has been invited to become a part of this wonderful tradition in partnership with South Val-ley Church. We can participate in three ways: the pur-chase of a $25 meal voucher (feeds a family four), do-nations of gently used clothing, and/or signing up to help serve meals on Thanksgiving Day. More information and details will follow in next week’s bulletin. In the spirit of our Pastoral Plan, this is a won-derful opportunity for us to offer love, prayer and hope this holiday season.

SING A NEW SONG What can you do to help increase the number of parishioners currently participating in the Music Ministry at OLPH? 1. Sing in a choir. If you have a nice voice, and a desire to sing, join a choir. A. What is required? A love for music; an ability to sing on pitch; can make a time commitment of approximately 3 hours a week. B. Is there an audition required? No, just an interview to determine what choir or ensemble would fit you best, and what vocal part you sing. C. Do I have to read music? No. Rehearsals are usually recorded. D. What are the benefits? Participating in an activity which is stress free; joining a “choral family”; learn- ing and presenting great music; enhancing the prayer experience of the assembly; and most important of all, singing to the glory of God. 2. What can I do if I am not a singer? A. If you know someone who loves to sing, encourage them to join a choir. B. When you are at Mass, if someone close to you seems to have a good voice, invite them to consider par- ticipating in one of our choirs. The quality of the music presented makes a huge difference at Mass. If we work together, we can create a music min-istry that every parishioner of OLPH can be proud of. DID YOU KNOW Talk with Your Children About Safety at School

“Back-to-school does not have to mean back-to-worrying. Though safety inside school is ultimately the responsi-bility of the principal and school staff, parents can take a few basic steps to ensure a safe school experience.” Talk with your child about safety. Be specific. Talk about instinct and paying attention to funny feelings of fear. Explain what to do if she doesn't feel safe (find a teacher, call 911, etc.). Make sure she knows how to contact you or a trusted neighbor who is likely to be at home. For more information, please visit http://www.scholastic.com/parents/resources/article/parent-teacher-partnerships/6-rules-school-safety
