Announcements The “Supra Quæ Propitio” (Part 1 of 2)

The Priest stretches out his hands again and continues the Great Prayer, saying: Supra quae

propitio ac sereno vultu respicere digneris – Upon which deign to look with a propitious

and serene countenance. Yes, Lord, although Thou art Infinite Sanctity, Infinite Power,

Sovereign Being Itself, deign in Thy Goodness and Mercy to cast Thine eyes upon this

earthly dwelling of ours, and vouchsafe to incline Thy Face unto that which we are now

offering unto Thee.

Formerly, up to the time of St. Leo, this Prayer did not end in the way it now does, it read:

et accepta habere illa – the word illa (those things) was understood then as the comple-

ment of the phrase. St. Leo thought it would be better to give it a better determination, and

so he added these words to the Prayer: Sanctum sacrificium, immaculatam hostiam. Such

then is the real sense: et accepta habere sanctum Sacrificium, immaculatam hostiam – and

hold acceptable this Holy Sacrifice, this spotless Victim. As it now stands the remainder of

the phrase forms a kind of parenthesis to the preceding: sicuti accepta habere dignatus es

munera pueri tui justi Abel – as you deigned to accept the offering of Thy just servant

Abel... Receive then, O Lord, this Sacrifice (says the Priest) as Thou didst accept the offer-

ings of Thy servant, the Just Abel. The Gifts of Abel, O Lord, were agreeable unto Thee,

and yet what he offered was infinitely inferior to That which we are now able to present

unto Thee – there is no comparison possible between these two Sacrifices. Nevertheless,

lowly as Abel’s Sacrifice was, Thou didst graciously accept it.

Dom Prosper Guéranger (1865–1865), Abbot of Solesmes. Translated from French into

English by Reverend Dom Laurence Shepherd, monk of the Benedictine Congregation.

Dear Fr. Vernoy,

I wish to thank you for inviting me to offer a First Mass at St. Thomas More Chapel for the solemnity of its patron saint. It was a great honour. I was very happy to give first blessings to the pa-rishioners afterwards. I was also very touched by the warm reception of the parish-ioners. I enjoyed my stay very much and look forward to returning in the future. In Christ, Fr. Peter Fortin PS: I will offer 3 Masses for the priests and for the parishioners of St. Thomas More.
