A WORD FROM THE PASTOR

Renew My Church: Discussions Continue

Thank you to everyone who joined our second parish conversation last week. It is clear from the turnout both in person and online and the discussion that there are so many people who love our parish, our Church, and our Lord with all their heart, mind, body and soul! Thanks be to God!

As is evident, the conversations we are having are not easy. There are so many emotions involved – concerns, anxieties, frustrations. But there is also future possibility and, most important, hope. We know that what the Lord calls us to is something better than we can imagine for ourselves. While that is hard to see at times, we keep our faith in Jesus Christ who said, “Behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Mt 28:20)

Our Grouping Team discussions will continue to work through the scenarios and develop the feedback that represents what is unique about our parishes. Using your questions, concerns and comments, our Grouping Team will craft a response to the scenarios that we feel will best serve our community and parish. Your participation this past week is a crucial part of the final report we will be submitting to the Archdiocese. As Cardinal Cupich and Archdiocesan leadership have said since the beginning, it is the people in the pews who know their local communities best.

So as the Grouping Team carries forward your hopes and dreams into the feedback discernment, please continue to pray for all involved that, as a result, we are better able to make disciples, build community and inspire witness for a world that desperately needs Jesus Christ.

As your pastor, please know that I pray for you all constantly. I also pray that the Holy Spirit might enlighten my heart and mind to serve you best as I am able. I value and trust your feedback as a crucial part of my pastoring this parish. Thank you again for all your prayers and together we will move boldly into our next century of faith!

As always, for more information, visit RenewMyChurch.org, or email us at [email protected].

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR ATTENDANCE AT SUNDAY MASS

We are so grateful to be able to attend Mass again! This privilege is offered with a limit to the maximum number of people who can be in the church at one time. We must maintain records for the Illinois Department of Public Health of all who enter our churches for the purposes of contact tracing if and when a confirmed case of COVID–19 is identified.

Attendance is limited and reservations are necessary to attend Mass with sign up through SignUpGenius.com. A specific link is posted on our website. You do not need to have an account with this website to register for Mass, but you will be asked for your name, phone number, and email. Your registration will be recorded on our reservation list and you will be checked in at the door.

CHURCH IS OPEN Following Archdiocesan COVID-19 guidelines, Saint Pascal Church has reopened on a limited basis.

Worshipers are required to wear masks. Please enter the church from the south Melvina Street door (nearest the rectory) and exit through the Dakin Street door. Those with mobility issues may enter and exit through the Dakin Street door. Please follow instructions from ushers and greeters.

For Saint Pascal to continue to safely conduct approved church services, we need volunteers:

To greet people at the door and instruct them on the protocols for being in church (no fever, wearing face coverings, using hand sanitizer, keeping social distance, etc.)

To usher people to seats, direct the flow of people during the service, and ensure people leave through the proper exit.

To clean the church after services end and everyone has left.

Of course, many hands make light work. The more people who volunteer, the less any one person would have to do. Training and all necessary supplies will be provided. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, and those 65 and older should make sure they feel well enough to help. To volunteer, please sign up online on the parish website or call the parish office (773-725-7641).

SAINT PASCAL LIVE STREAMS MASS AT 10:00 AM ON SUNDAYS

Join us on YouTube to watch our Sunday liturgy on your PC/Mac, tablet,

or smart phone. The content is scheduled to populate shortly before the start of the each liturgy. The link

can be accessed from our parish website - www.stpascal.org.

Please join us for prayer! May God bless you and keep you safe!

Jack's project is raised planter bins for the science department at Pope Francis Global Academy. They are made from composite decking and aluminum so that they won't rot over time and also don't put chemicals in the soil. Jack designed the planters and the scouts from Troop #815 assisted n building them under his direction. They are going to be used for the ecosystem unit in Mr. Conley's classes

Patrick's project is improved signage and social distance spacers to assist the Church with their COVID-19 precautions and a Blessing Box to distribute religious texts to the community. Patrick designed and installed signs about COVID-19 precautions throughout the church and replaced the caution tape with Row Closed signs and ribbon. The scouts of Troop #815 helped assemble social distance spacers for the pews in order to keep parishioners a safe distance from each other as they worship. The Blessing Box will be installed on the church campus to distribute texts to the community and will be put in by early September.

Eagle Scout News from Troop #815

Several boys in Troop #815 are currently working toward their Eagle Scout rank, but two - Jack Summers and Patrick Berger - are in the final phases.

Kudos to both boys and to the several other scouts who continue to work towards their Eagle Scout rank!

SACRAMENTAL CELEBRATIONS

The celebration of the sacraments is one of the most important gifts that we have, and we look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following: INFANT BAPTISMS: Registration in the parish is a prerequisite. Parents are required to attend a Pre-Baptismal Preparation Session with the celebrant two months prior to the Baptism either in person or Zoom. Arrangements can be made at the Parish Office.

RECONCILIATION: Every Saturday at 9:00 AM

SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY: Either the bride, the groom, or the parent of either must be a registered and active parishioner for at least six months before contacting us to make any arrangements. Allow at least six months to complete wedding arrangements. Arrangements can be made at the Parish Office by the bride and groom.

SACRAMENT OF THE SICK: Anytime a person is facing a serious illness, surgery or hospitalization, it is proper to receive the Sacrament of the Sick. Please contact the parish office. If the office is closed please leave a message on a priest’s voicemail.

GLUTEN FREE HOSTS: Saint Pascal wishes all who are properly disposed to be able to receive the host at Communion time, and join with the others in our parish family without the fear of becoming ill. If you would like to receive a gluten free host, please add your request to the comment on the Mass Reservation sign up form so the priest is aware of your request

MINISTRY OF CARE - HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS: Please notify the parish office if you know of someone who is unable to join us at Mass and would appreciate having the Eucharist brought to their home. Our Ministers of Care bring Holy Communion to those who are sick and homebound, when conditions permit. During the present health crisis we may not be allowed access to visit people in hospitals or rehabilitation centers, depending on the rules and restrictions of the individual facility, but our prayers go out to all of our parish family during these trying times.

Cancellation of Mass is leading to significant losses in our offertory

income, which is placing all our ministries and operations at significant risk. Many people in our parish and community depend upon your regular, weekly offertory contributions and, during this current challenge, they are needed more than ever. We ask you to prayerfully consider maintaining your regular weekly donation level or even increasing it during these times.

Please consider giving online at GiveCentral.org where you can make a weekly

offertory contribution to our Saint Pascal Church family and keep the vital ministries and services we provide going. You can use this website to make paperless donations to our church by using your credit card, debit card and electronic checking payments making either one-time or recurring donations. To access this site, please click on “donate” at www.stpascal.org and take a few minutes to set up your donation. If you would like to talk to a live person, please call (312) 929-2306.

Please Note….

Saint Pascal’s Parish Office is open from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Friday.

However, due to restrictions resulting from COVID-19, we ask that visitors call the office (773-725-7641) to schedule an appointment prior to visiting the office.

Pope Francis Tweet

Trust in the Lord and make an effort to enter into his plans, accepting that His salvation can reach us in ways that may be different from what we expect.

HOLY LAND COLLECTION SEPTEMBER 13, 2020 The collection benefitting the Holy Land is normally collected on Good Friday. The Archdiocese of Chicago changed the collection date to September 13, 2020 Envelopes from the current mailing from Overt Press inadvertently listed the collection as Good Friday instead of Holy Land Collection. All donations go to the preservation of the Holy Land sites.

Thank you for your continued support of our parish and those around the world!

Upcoming Collections: Seminary Collection - September 20, 2020 Peter’s Pence - October 4, 2020 World Mission Sunday - October 18, 2020 PRAYER FOR RENEW MY CHURCH

Lord Jesus, you speak to us today, as you spoke to holy men and women who have gone before us. In every age and in our own time, you call to us and say: Renew My Church.

Pour out the gift of your Holy Spirit upon us, and so enable us to hear you clearly, to listen to each other attentively, to imagine our future boldly, to discern your

direction wisely, to persevere in your holy will courageously, to stay together in charity, to surrender our own plans readily, to embrace the greater good, to hand on your gifts to future generations.

May we remain in the holy company of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the apostles, and all the saints. May their example and presence inspire us with patient confidence in the work of your grace.

We ask this of you who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen

LABOR

A truly American sentiment recognizes the dignity of labor and the fact that honor lies in honest toil. —Grover Cleveland

A MESSAGE OF LOVE In the final verses of today’s Gospel reading Jesus says that when two or three are gathered in his name, “there am I in the midst of them” (Matthew 18:20). So we understand that fraternal correction is always undertaken with Jesus present to us.

Likewise, encouraging the good in others is not only the right thing for us to do, it is a necessity. The Lord tells the prophet Ezekiel that if he “does not speak out” to dissuade a person from evil, then he too will be held responsible.

We live in a “do your own thing” age when moral objectivity is often ignored. Clearly when the message we share with others is one of love, our motives cannot ever be misinterpreted. As St. Paul writes, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law” (Romans 13:10). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Witnesses to the Civilization of Love

War in Chicago Neighborhoods

We have heard it said, and we know, some of our brothers and sisters in Chicago neighborhoods are constantly enduring the destructive experience of war. The everyday violence constitutes a grave and deep wound inflicted on our whole community. These conflicts are taking place amid general indifference of many.

Our mission as Catholic Christians is to be close to those who suffer from the terror and destruction of war. How do we as Church, bring Christ’s love to the defenseless forgotten victims of neighborhood wars? Do we pray for peace in our neighborhoods? What service do we offer the wounded and all those who live in fear? Do we speak out in order to make leaders hear the cry of pain of the suffering and put an end to every form of hostility, abuse and the violation of fundamental human rights?

In this time of so many wars, Pope Francis said, “Never war! Never war! I think especially about those children who had the hope of a future, dignified life, but had it taken away. Dead children, wounded children. Mutilated children. Orphaned children. Children who play with toys made out of the remains of weapons. Children who cannot smile anymore. Stop. Please. I beg you with all my heart it is time to stop. Stop please.”

Questions & Comments Welcome

SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DEPAUL SAINT PASCAL CONFERENCE

Lose your life, and find your life. There is the Cross, and it is our Glory. This is the

Paschal Mystery in a nutshell. However, it is our nature that when things are going well, we tend to forget about the Cross. Then, when the going gets rough, we feel lost. The truth is, we must follow Jesus in all things, and surrender ourselves to God. The Paschal Mystery isn’t just a concept; it’s a reality, and it is not without its demands. We must accept that sharing in Jesus’ Glory means that we must also share in His Passion.

Donations of non-perishable food for the Saint Vincent de Paul pantry may be placed in the blue barrel near the exit door of the church. Cash donations may be placed in an envelope marked "Saint Vincent de Paul" and deposited either in the secure black mail box at the rectory or in the candle donation boxes in the church. During these difficult times our work goes on and we appreciate your continued support.
