The parish office will be closed this Monday, August 10th in observance of the Rhode Island holiday. Come join us for 9AM Mass at St. Thomas More Church.

Welcome Leo Joseph Cantone to the faith...first post pandemic baptism!

It was such a joy this week to celebrate the first baptism since all the delays of the pandemic. Little Leo Joseph was well behaved and a complete joy to be with as we witnessed the Lord Jesus mark his soul forever and we welcomed him into the Church.

This Sunday we look forward to celebrating Confirmation of our sophomores who will finally receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit at 4PM at St. Thomas More. You are welcome to join us by livestream.

Weddings have also resumed in somewhat smaller fashion in the parish. You can only imagine the new stresses that brides and grooms and their families have experienced in an ever-quick changing terrain of rules and regulations. I can happily share with you that those couples who move forward with their religious ceremonies do so because they feel Christ is calling them to vows, and that priority remains first over all others. I have seen new graces from these celebrations.

We are gearing up for religious education and will be soon be seeking registrations as in years past. We have high hopes for safe, in-person learning and our catechists are eager to resume teaching our young about Jesus and our faith. We will be announcing our program in the weeks ahead.

We continue to pray with and share our love with all of you that are not yet able to join us in person. Know that you remain part of our core parish family. If anyone needs to be anointed or would like the Eucharist please contact the rectory and we will be glad to come to you.

Note: our phone system has had some problems of late and we are researching a new one as soon as possible. Some have said it is not possible to leave a message at times. Sorry for this inconvenience.

Know of my prayers and availability to you and your family. Jesus we trust in you!

Fr. Taillon

Seminarians for the Diocese of Providence. Photo courtesy of Our Lady of Providence Seminary.

The Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, is welcoming eight new seminarians this year - the highest number of incoming seminarians in nearly four decades.

“Some great news to share: The Providence Diocese is welcoming 8 *new seminarians* this year, the most new seminarians in almost 40 years,” said Bishop Thomas Tobin of Providence, RI on Twitter last week. “Pray for our seminarians, including the new students. God said, ‘I will give you shepherds,’ and indeed He is!” the bishop added.

Father Brian Morris, vocations director for Our Lady of Providence Seminary in the diocese, attributed the recent increase in seminarians to the community’s dedicated prayer efforts. He told CNA the seminary has held adoration every Thursday for an increase in vocations, and parishes have hosted similar efforts. “It’s the result of a lot of prayer. People throughout our diocese have been praying diligently for more vocations, more young men who consider the call to the priesthood,” he said. “Why God chose this year? I don’t know, that’s up to him, but I think some of it is to deal us some good news. [We are] in a time right now [of ] negativity and so much going on. This is wonderful news for our diocese, and I think God is showing us a little light in the dark.”

Like many areas in the U.S., the Diocese of Providence has faced a clergy shortage as older priests retire, including some who had been responsible for multiple parishes. These parishes are often then faced with practical challenges, such as limited sacramental ministry. In addition, some have closed in recent years as church attendance drops.

Father Chris Murphy, the rector of the seminary, told CNA that the increase in seminarians is encouraging. However, he stressed that quantity alone is not the goal. “We want to pray for good priests, not just many priests… The Church is not desperate for many priests. The Church is desperate for good and Holy priests,” he said. “We have to remember to trust in the Lord that he’s going to provide the shepherds for the Church that the Church needs at the current time.” The diocese has also taken serious steps to enhance its vocation efforts, Murphy said. Events such as Hiking with the Saints offer opportunities to interact with priests. Additionally, the diocese reintroduced Quo Vadis retreats - which allow high school boys to deepen their faith and learn more about vocations - after a several year hiatus. While these events and retreats are helpful, Murphy said, the greatest fruits have been borne from building personal relationships with young men over the years. These relationships have included one-on-one meetings or phone conversations while the men are away at college. “I would say even more important than [events] is the example of the witness of the priests in these men’s lives - their pastors, their chaplains, their theology teachers at the high schools for the Catholic high school students,” he said. The priest said that he tries to provide opportunities for fraternity, but added, “truth be told, I think that a lot of the work is done at the local level through the parishes.”

Father Morris said the increase in seminarians is a sign of hope for the local Church and community. “I just think it’s a wonderful, hopeful image to see these young men, who come from very diverse backgrounds and [have] different personalities, to show that there is not like a cookie-cutter image of a priest, to show that young men are still looking at something greater than what the world is offering them,” he said. “It’s encouraging people that it’s okay to give your life to Christ, to give your life to God and not be afraid of what you’re missing out in this world because there’s something greater.”

Bible Study notes from Maryann...Some Features of Hebrew Poetry—Look for these as you read the Book of Psalms

1) Poetic Units: In ancient Hebrew scrolls, individual poems were run together. The chapter divisions of the Bible which we have today were added as late as the 12th century. Modern translators make arbitrary breaks. Look for the shift in topic or address to detect where one poem or unit ends and another begins. Ex: Ps 2 vss. 1-6 The psalmist speaks vss. 7-9 The king speaks and repeats an oracle of the LORD. vss. 10 & 11 The psalmist speaks again.

2) Parallelism: Hebrew poetry doesn’t rhyme with words but with thoughts. Often the poet says the same thing twice or three times using synonyms. This is called parallelism. Sometimes the second line will expand on or contradict the first line. Ex: Ps 2 vs 2 “He who sits in the heavens laughs; the LORD has them in derision.” Jesus used parallelism: “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you.” “Suffer the little children to come to me, and do not hinder them.”

3) Similes and Metaphors: Ancient Hebrew poets did not have the language of feelings as we know it (e.g.. angry, sad, happy, frustrated, terrified, sleepy, etc.) They evoked these feelings in their listeners by using very vivid metaphors. Ex: Ps 18:4-5: “The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of perdition assailed me.” In other words, King David thought he was about to die, so he paints a desperate word picture.

4) Refrains or Repeated words: The same line repeats twice or more in a unit, or words are repeated for rhetorical effect. Ex: Ps 13:1-2: “How long, O Lord, will you forget me? How long will you hide your face from me…..How long must I bear pain…How long shall my enemy be exalted….?”

5) Envelope or “inclusio”: The same line repeats at the beginning or end of a poetic unit. Ex: Ps 42:5 & 11: Why are you cast down,O my soul…..? Hope in God for I shall again praise Him.”

6) Anthropomorphism: God is described in human terms. Ex: Ps 44:23 “Rouse yourself! Why do you sleep, O LORD?….Why do you hide your face?” Does God sleep? Does God have a face?

7) Hyperbole: Intentional exaggeration for effect. Ex. Ps 6: -7: “I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears”

8) Rhetorical or leading questions: Ex: Ps 44:20-21: “If we had forgotten the name of our God, or spread out our hands to a strange god, would not God discover this? For He knows the secrets of the heart.”

9) Irony and Sarcasm: Manuscripts were scarce. Poetry was spoken not read. The tone of the speaker’s voice carried the rhetorical impact. Ex: Ps 50:12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you….” God speaking about unworthy sacrificial worship.

10) Personification: the attribution of human form to an abstract concept. Ex. Ps 49:15 “Like sheep they are appointed to Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd.”
