Permanent Deacon

Information Sessions

In the August 29 edition of the One Voice, Bishop Baker announced information sessions for those interested in finding out more about serving as a permanent deacon in the Diocese of Birmingham. These sessions will occur throughout the Diocese. The closest one to Prince of Peace is on September 14 at St. Peter the Apostle Church in Hoover at 3:00 pm.

The Deacon Formation program is a multi-year process run by a formation team led by Deacon Sam Anzalone ([email protected]). This program helps its participants discern whether they are called to serve as a Deacon, an ancient ministry in the Church which focuses on care for the Chalice during Mass, proclamation of the Gospel, and care for the poor and vulnerable.

How Good Do We Have to Be? How Good Do We Have to Be? By Rabbi Harold Kushner is very strong on the point of healthy religious faith involving genuine community and mutual responsibility for ongoing growth and conversion in individuals and in society.

“If anyone tells you that one mistake puts you at risk of losing God’s and our friendship and you believe it, then you will inevitably define yourself as a sinner…. If religion tells you that even angry and lustful thoughts are sinful then you will come to think of yourselves as sinner…. By that definition and that approach everyone of us does something wrong probably every day and we’ll never make it. If nothing short of purity and perfection permits us to stand before the throne of God, then none of us ever will.

When religion teaches us that God loves the wounded soul, the chastised soul, that out of experience has taught us something about its own fallibility and its own limitations. But, when religion teaches us to stand together in those experiences, when religion teaches us that being human is a complicated challenge and that all of us will make mistakes in the process of learning how to do it right and that we need to stand together in that process, then we become participants in a wonderful adventure. Our mistakes are no longer emblems of our unworthiness, but invitations to grow. We will be brave enough to live and to share life.”

Fr. Hoye to Return to Prince of Peace Fr. Hoye joined us last Spring for a wonderful retreat experience. He will be coming to

Prince of Peace again on September 20-24. He will be celebrating most of the Masses

that weekend. Fr. Hoye will begin his weekend as our featured speaker at the

Confirmation retreat on Sunday, September 21, from 1-6 pm. On Monday, September 22,

he will be presenting an evening of Spiritual Renewal for our entire Parish. The Spiritual

Renewal will begin at 6:30 pm in the Main Church – dinner will be served at 5:30 pm in

Deasy Hall. Childcare will be provided. On Tuesday, September 23, Fr. Hoye will be

speaking to all those who volunteer in Ministry at Prince of Peace. “We Are All Called to

Ministry” is a night of re-energizing, renewal and re-commissioning beginning at 6:30 pm

in the Main Church. We are very much looking forward to his return for what will be an

amazing weekend. It will be an event you won't want to miss!

Stewardship: Parishioners Answering God’s Call A parishioner, a working Mom, recently offered to help with the preparation for Fall Sunday School. She couldn’t commit to teaching a class, but knew that she had some availability to help in other areas. Materials were provided to her that she could tear apart, sort and file while watching TV at night. It was a great help to the staff and allowed the parishioner to use her ‘gifts.’

Please submit your stewardship story examples to [email protected]. They may be edited for space consideration.

Casting Lots for the Seamless Garment (John 19:23-24) Written by a Man in Uganda

“A few years ago, I got a call on my cell phone from a twelve year old child from my village. He was calling me from a bus stop. He’d taken a bus into the city alone and he was calling me to ask if I could help him find a way to go to school. Both of his parents had died of AIDS, and he had no money for tuition. I told him to stay where he was and left work immediately to pick him up. At first I was very mad at him. He should not have traveled alone. But then I looked at him and I saw myself. I’d also been desperate to go to school after my father was killed, but we had no money. So even though I was suffering myself, I told him I would try to help him. My salary was not enough, so I tried many things to get money. After work, I went to the landfill to hunt for recyclables. But after I paid to have them cleaned, there was no money left. Now I’m trying to make bricks. I have a small operation in the village to make bricks and I sell them in the city. It doesn’t make much money, but it’s enough to pay tuition for the boy and three of his siblings.” No one in Africa wants your money. They want the dignity of earning a living and to help the less fortunate in their community. 9 out of every 10 Ugandans have tried a business in an effort to improve their own lives and break the cycle of poverty. They’re not in poverty because they won’t work but because they live under a totalitarian rule that oppresses them, even to death. Amid the rampant disease, poverty, civil unrest, and illiteracy, there are hundreds of thousands of souls yearning to live meaningful lives. You can learn more about these incredible people at www.humansofnewyork.com. (Courtesy of Dennis Krantz’s weekly bible commentary - [email protected]) For more information on the Seamless Garment Ministry, please contact Tom & Elsbeth Germanson at 205.565.3456.
