Pastor’s Message Rev. Msgr. Romulo Vergara, JCD

Lent offers us a chance to remember what matters, to strip away what’s unimportant, and to once again make ourselves present. And in that pres-ence, we can place ourselves in the Divine Pres-ence, trusting that He will use us as He wants.

That kind of faith made Abraham the father of great nation. And it led Jesus to a mountaintop, where – as the gospel reminds us today — he was transfigured. That mysterious moment was Christ’s own statement to the world of whom he was – another way of saying, “Here I am.”

There is a time honored tradition in our faith of “giving something up” for the season of Lent. This year, as we allow the Spirit to lead us into our per-sonal wildernesses, let us use this practice of self-discipline to root out those things which are keep-ing us captive. We may not overcome them in the forty days of Lent, it may be the journey of our lifetime, but these forty days of mindfulness could be life-changing.

With our most merciful God, repentance is not punishment, it is renewal. When we repent, we lis-ten to God guiding us away from the attitudes that imprison us towards the attitudes that set us free. The Spirit is leading us to freedom, if only we will follow.

And as the scripture told us on Ash Wednesday: now, Lent, is “the acceptable time” to make that happen. This Lent, let us ask ourselves: when God calls, how will we respond? Am I ready?

The journey will take forty days. To make this journey we must pray, fast, and give alms – and again, we have to do this in a way that is real.

These three spiritual ‘exercises’ have the goal of setting us free from attachment to sin, fulfilling the first of Jesus commands: Repent! They also have the effect, if done seriously, of strengthening our belief in God and in the Good.

I wish you and your loved ones Lenten blessings of peace and renewal, and may your hearts be made free with Easter joy!

Msgr. Loi Vergara

This Week’s Second Collection is for the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal

The Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church has launched a new way of communi-cation among various parish groups and our parishioners through flock-notes. Several parishes in the Archdio-cese have been using this means al-ready which is a proposal by the Arch-diocesan Commission on Communica-tions. Just follow the instructions above and we are excited to inform you about parish events, schedules, and announcements through phone or e-mail! As in the past, the following regulations are in place for Abstaining and Fasting during Lent:

ABSTINENCE: Everyone fourteen years of age and older is bound to abstain from meat on ASH WEDNES-DAY, the FRIDAYS of Lent and GOOD FRIDAY.

FAST: Everyone eighteen years of age and older but under the age of sixty is also bound to fast on ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY.

On these two days, the law of fast allows only one full meal a day, but does not prohibit taking some food during the day, so long as this does not constitute another full meal. Drinking liquids during the day is permitted.

When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. In doubt concerning fast or abstinence, a priest assigned to pastoral ministry or confessor should be consulted. In the spirit of penance, the

faithful should not lightly excuse themselves from this obligation.

During lent, SVdP is asking for donations of eye glasses for the homeless. There will be a basket to put them in as you enter the Church. Thank you for your generosity!

Update in our indoor and outdoor Masses

Due to Covid precautions, we will celebrate our 8:15AM daily Mass inside the Church while our Sunday Masses will be celebrated at the courtyard, if weather permits.

Whenever we celebrate our liturgy inside the Church, we can only allow 100 people inside, including the priests and the ministers, while the rest of the people will stay at the courtyard. We will do it in a first come, first serve basis, especially for our Holy Week Liturgies.
