HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY I think of my Mom every day, but especially today as we celebrate Mother’s Day. My vocation to the priesthood is a gift from God, but God works through human instruments, and I know that I would not be priest today if not for the love and prayers and example of my Mom (Peg Guest). When I baptize a baby I always stress to the parents how important they are to the faith development of their infant child. Parents are the first and most important teachers of our Catholic Faith. The unconditional love, compassion and mercy of God is first shown to us by our parents. I thank God that my Mom and Dad were instruments of God’s love. My first experience of Church and of our faith was taught to me by my Mom, and I still remember it very well. When I was 5 years old it was time for me to leave the house and enter that strange world of kindergarten. I did not want to go to school! I did not understand why I would have to leave the house and freedom to play and watch cartoons all day and go to school. I remember my Mom telling me “not to be afraid.” In fact, she said, “Jesus and Mary will be with you and will help you.” Directly across the street from our public school kindergarten was our parish church of St. Bernard in Northeast Philadelphia. Before going to school, Mom would take me by the hand and we would visit our Church. We would light a candle before the Blessed Mother and kneel before the tabernacle and my Mom would lead me in prayer, asking Jesus and Mary to help me in school that day. “Please Jesus, give me courage, help me not to be afraid.” Needless to say, I survived kindergarten. Today, I wonder if my Mom thought that her crying 5-year-old son would one day be a priest and stand at that same Altar and celebrate his First Mass. I wonder if one of the prayers she prayed was for my vocation. As an adult, my Mom continued to urge me “not to be afraid” as I prayed about entering the seminary. She continued to urge me to trust in God’s love and that Jesus and our Blessed Mother would be at my side. Thank you Mom! I know your prayers for me continue. I remember you and Dad everyday, especially at the Altar. Happy Mother’s Day!

God Bless you and your family, Father Vince

(Note, this is a re-print from last year, but the column has special meaning for me.)

Recuerdo a mi madre diciéndome "no tengas

miedo".

miedo". Puedo decir que sobreviví al jardín infantil. Hoy, ¿me

Santísima Madre estarían a mi lado.

Dios te bendiga a ti y a tu familia, Padre Vicente

tiene un significado especial para mí.)

Stewards Witness

“Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.” – 1 JOHN 4:15

How strong is your faith? When you have an opportunity to

either defend or clarify a question about our Catholic faith, do you do it? Or, do you remain silent so that others don’t think you

are weird? Pray for the courage to be a strong Steward in all circumstances and to share your witness with others.

Nativity Council #2976

In April, the Knights of Columbus Nativity Council delivered to the Ronald McDonald House, 54 lbs. of aluminum tabs provided by the Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. Our council would like to thank those who participated in this program. The tabs are sold by the McDonald house and the money used to support the families living there, while their child is undergoing treatment at a medical facility or hospital. In particular we would like to thank both Shenandoah Village and an unknown person or organization who have contributed pounds of tabs. We continue to collect used eye glasses and phones and provide them to those in need. There are collection boxes in the vestibule of each church. Thank you for your continued support in our programs.

***

The Knights of Columbus, Nativity and the Respect Life Ministry will again be collecting diapers and wipes for Guadalupe Family Services run by Sister Helen Cole in

Camden, NJ. The collection period will begin today and extend to the end of May. Your donations can be dropped off in the

vestibule of either church.

Your donations large or small are greatly appreciated by Sister Helen and Guadalupe

Family Services, and they really make a difference in their community.

Monetary donations are also accepted.

Who Am I to Judge? Discussing moral issues with family and friends can be a challenge

in a culture that strongly promotes the idea that there is no objective truth. Speaking from a wealth of personal experience,

renowned author and theologian Dr. Edward Sri provides 5 “keys” to enable Christians to oppose with logic and love what Pope Benedict XVI called the “dictatorship of relativism.” He also

clarifies the proper understanding of what it means to judge, and the importance of making good judgments.

There are 8 new titles in the boxes

(and two in Spanish) in both churches.

Donation - only $3.00 per CD.
