In this Sunday’s gospel reading Jesus says that he is “the good shepherd” and that “I know my own and my own know me”. It is very comforting to think that we are known by Jesus, completely and lovingly, and that we can flock to him confident of his blessing and protection. It is good to “belong” to him and we also have the comfort of belonging to the church, with its sacraments and supportive community. Jesus goes on to say, “there are other sheep I have that are not of this fold and these I have to lead as well.” Granted, at the time he was talking about the pagans, people who were not of the People of Israel – namely, us – but in our context we should think of those who do not have the security of knowing Jesus and of belonging to our church community and be ready to reach out to any who think they hear the shepherd’s voice and would like to join us. The love Jesus has for us is pure gift and one we should be ready to share.
