Pastor’s Column

Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Dear Parish Family,I was recently asked to comment on the appropriateness of a political website that claims to be Catholic. My first reaction to that question is to recoil from any attempt to focus on partisan politics. Upon further reflection, however, I have to ask myself what it might mean for John the Baptist to call Jesus the “lamb of God.” Images of the sweet holy card with Jesus and a little lamb on his shoulder come to mind; but to the first century Jew, the lamb was a “sacrificial victim” and an important source of economic welfare. Between now and the beginning of Lent, our gospels introduce us to the magnetic person and powerful preacher who is Jesus of Nazareth. His commentary on the “Torah” (the first part of Matthew’s gospel) forces the Jewish audience to look at the “Law” in a different way. Our Catholic values require that we reflect a profound respect for human life from the moment of conception to the moment of natural death. God chose to redeem us by becoming one with us in all things but sin. Our reflection of this respect, however, ought to challenge us to make our homes and communities of faith more welcoming places of refuge for sinners and saints alike. Among the most difficult demands of the gospels is the command to “love your enemies.” As we know, love is a decision; and our enemies are both intimate and foreign. In retrospect, I suspect that the admonition of John the Baptist to “behold the lamb of God” is political in the purest sense.Yours in Christ,

Sponsor Of The WeekWe would like to thank Molly Mullallyfor placing an ad in our weekly bulletin.

Humble Thanks to our Supporters from SHARE @ Blessed SacramentThe generosity of so many parishioners to SHARE @ Blessed Sacrament during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays enabled our parish food ministry to provide holidays turkeys and hams, as well as bountiful bags of nutritional food, to many families and individuals in need. This continues our parish’s generosity which has distributed in excess of 12,000 food packages during the past twelve years. This distribution of food is just part of the story: The positive effect on those we serve is virtually unmeasurable since there are so many conditions which trigger the unfortunate circumstances they cope with every day. Heartfelt thanks to you and to our SHARE @ BS Team for your generosity. We couldn’t do it without you! God bless you.

Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time
