“The community of believers was of one heart and mind…”. (Acts 4:32)

After reporting for duty as your new Pastor on July 1st - and after our Faculty / Staff Retreat on August 5th, I have

found myself filled with sincere gratitude for the great gift of our outstanding Parish Staff - and for the great gift of our outstanding St. Edmund Faculty, Staff and Administration! Since I have arrived, I have been asking our Parish and School leaders to pray for the very same grace - as recorded in the Act of the Apostles - that the leaders of the early Church prayed for: The Grace to be of One Heart and One Mind!

Now let’s be clear - the hoped for experience of “Unity” resulting from the gift of this grace does not mean “Uniformity”. That is to say that those who are united, “One Heart & One Mind”, in love of - and in service to - Jesus Christ and His Church do not have to agree about everything, nor do they all have to do everything in the very same way. On the contrary, as we see in the description of the contentious “Council of Jerusalem” (Acts 15), the early Church had to resolve several issues of disagreement between the Jewish and Gentile members of the community. Nevertheless, it was their keen desire to be of “One Heart & One Mind” that allowed them to keep their eyes on the prize - Union with Christ and the building up of His Church. In like manner, here in Eunice & Duralde, I am asking each and every member of our Parishes of St. Anthony & Annunciation to join with me in seeking a fresh outpouring of this critically important foundational grace. And might I suggest that a good way to seek after this grace - to be of “One Mind & One Heart” - is to commit to adding the “Peace Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi” as an ongoing part of our personal & parish Spiritual Exercises!

Peace Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:where there is hatred, let me sow love;where there is injury, pardon;where there is doubt, faith;where there is despair, hope;where there is darkness, light;where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seekto be consoled as to console,to be understood as to understand,to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen.
