Dear Friends,

Although we are well into 2013, we hope you will enjoy this summary of our important work in 2012. Review of the MBF’s activity of 2012 must begin with grateful acknowledgement of the generous contributions of time, money, and caring involvement of so many lawyers and judges in the Massachusetts legal community. The MBF’s IOLTA Grants Program, managed with aid of over 100 volunteer lawyers and judges vetting grant applications, provided the means to support provision of legal assistance to over 75,000 underserved, low-income people across the entire state and to enhance the administration of justice. During a slow recovery from economic recession, we have sought to stretch resources as far as possible to help those who would otherwise go without legal assistance. In addition to the $2.53 million awarded in 2012 (comprised of $1.9 million of current year IOLTA receipts and supplemented with $630,000 from the MBF’s Stabilization Fund established in earlier years), we also tapped the MBF Endowment toprovide almost $30,000 in stipends to talented law students for summer internships in civil legal services and an additional $17,000 to programs that advance our mission of increasing access to justice, including the Worcester Judicial Youth Corps, as well as approximately $50,000 to cover a portion of the administrative costs of operating the IOLTA grants program.

Together with contributions from our Fellows, law firm and corporate partners, and friends, the MBF raised over $100,000 for its Endowment (a 12% increase over 2011) and we are working to raise even more by the end of 2013, and still more in 2014. We also continue outreach to impress on all concerned the continuing need for time and caring involvement as well as money, and are gratified by the response we have had.

We take seriously our responsibility to safeguard the values of our justice system. We hope you will continue to support us in the coming years so that we may continue our commitment to keeping the promise of justice for all.

2012 MBF LEGAL INTERN FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMThe MBF Legal Intern Fellowship Program selects exemplary law students to receive stipends of $6,000 each for work at Massachusetts nonprofits each summer. The MBF’s Legal Intern Fellowship Program was created to inspire a future generation of public interest attorneys, while simultaneously increasing staff resources to local legal aid organizations. The program is funded by Fellows’ contributions and the Smith Family Fund.
