PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Parents, It is with great excitement that I write this Welcome Back message for the newsletter. It has been a very warm and sunny summer and the Vitamin D has been good for the body and soul. On a more somber note, we were shocked by the sudden passing of two of our recent graduates over the holidays. Even though these tragic events brought much sadness into the hearts of the Massey-Vanier community, we will support each other and will be well prepared to greet your children, our students for the 2018-19 school year. The excitement comes from a great deal of work that the staff at Massey-Vanier has done to be able to rework the student timetable and add in what we call LIFT periods (Learning in Focus Time). This daily, 30 minute block will be time tailored to the various needs of our students i.e. Tutorials, enrichment, homework completion, project work, completion of evaluations and much more as we go through the year. The needs are determined by teachers and how this all works will be explained to students on the first day at our Opening Assembly. The goal of this initiative is to catch more students who are at risk of dropping out. Massey- Vanier has been on a steady incline over the last 4 years and our increase of success rates and decrease of drop out rate has placed us at the top amongst high schools in the ETSB. For a view of our increasing status amongst the schools in Quebec, please click on this link to view the Fraser Report for 2017. http://quebec.compareschoolrankings.org/secondary/SchoolsByRankLocationName.aspx With this initiative, we can continue to help each and every student learn at a high level in order to receive a high school leaving. We look forward to seeing you all at Orientation Day on August 20th, or August 21 st . The details for orientation were emailed out in July. If you missed it, then please see our Facebook site, Massey-Vanier Extra Extra Read all About it, or our school website for the details. Enjoy the nice weather and see you soon!! PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents,

It is with great excitement that I write this Welcome Back message for the newsletter. It has been

a very warm and sunny summer and the Vitamin D has been good for the body and soul.

On a more somber note, we were shocked by the sudden passing of two of our recent graduates

over the holidays. Even though these tragic events brought much sadness into the hearts of the

Massey-Vanier community, we will support each other and will be well prepared to greet your

children, our students for the 2018-19 school year.

The excitement comes from a great deal of work that the staff at Massey-Vanier has done to be

able to rework the student timetable and add in what we call LIFT periods (Learning in Focus

Time). This daily, 30 minute block will be time tailored to the various needs of our students i.e.

Tutorials, enrichment, homework completion, project work, completion of evaluations and much

more as we go through the year. The needs are determined by teachers and how this all works

will be explained to students on the first day at our Opening Assembly.

The goal of this initiative is to catch more students who are at risk of dropping out. Massey-

Vanier has been on a steady incline over the last 4 years and our increase of success rates and

decrease of drop out rate has placed us at the top amongst high schools in the ETSB. For a view

of our increasing status amongst the schools in Quebec, please click on this link to view the

Fraser Report for 2017.

With this initiative, we can continue to help each and every student learn at a high level in order

to receive a high school leaving.

We look forward to seeing you all at Orientation Day on August 20th, or August 21st. The details

for orientation were emailed out in July. If you missed it, then please see our Facebook site,

Enjoy the nice weather and see you soon!!

The Special Education Advisory Committee Wants You!

The Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC) advises the school board on its organization

of services for students with special needs, educates parents as well as encourages them to

become involved in their child’s school experience.

Parents of students with special needs constitute the majority of members on this committee. The

SEAC Chairperson and Parent Commissioner are selected from parent members of this

committee. Other members represent the various professional and support groups in the ETSB.

The committee allows you to meet and talk with others who have the interest of children with

special needs at heart. Meetings are held monthly in Magog at the Eastern Townships School

Board Office between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m. Mileage compensation is available.

If this committee interests you, please ask your school principal for an application brochure or

call the Director of Complementary Educational Services, Gail Kelso, at (819) 868-3100 x55035 to

give your name or to ask for clarification. Forms should be returned to your school principal by

October 4, 2018

Massey-Vanier Athletics 2017-18

After a very busy school year and an athletic calendar filled with much success, it’s my pleaseure to wish everyone a safe

and relaxing summer. Thank you to all the athletes who practiced and competed for their school with honour and respect

and to the many coaches who gave countless hours of time to form successful teams!

I’d like to take the time to acknowledge some of the achievements from the past year in athletics. Our bantam boys soccer

team won the ETIAC banner as league champions and pulled off a near perfect season. The senior girls soccer team

captured the ETIAC playoff championship trophy as underdogs for the first time since 2005. The bantam girls basketball

team won both the ETIAC league and playoff championships going undeafeated in that league. The senior girls basketball

team captured the QSSSA finalist banner for the second time in 3 years. We ran a track & field team for the first time in 15

years and competed in the SSIAA. Our wrestling team sent Charles Blanchard to the Canadian Nationals in Edmonton,

Alberta. Mackenzy Goyette and Izach Quilliams were named Robert Kay Junior Athletes of the Year. The senior athlete of

the year trophy was named the Blumenfeld Athlete of the Year and was awarded to Alyssa Sherrer and Nathaniel

Robinson. Congratulations everyone!

A reminder to everyone who has outstanding athletic fees, they will be carried over to next years fees but must be paid in

full before participation in a new sport. Our fees are often considered to be a nuisance but are necessary to cover the

ever increasing cost of transportation for our athletes.

On the topic of money, our 3rd annual “Pig Roast” fundraiser to benefit athletics will be held at the Brome fair grounds on

Saturday, September 22, 2018! Please save the date and join us to help raise money for athletics. The funds raised help

pay for much needed equipment, uniforms and assist in lowering fees for our athletes. The popular event will have

fantastic food and entertainment, along with an auction of donated items.

Have a great summer, practices resume on Thursday, September 6!

Toronto-Niagara Falls 2019

All of next year’s secondary III, IV and some WOTP students will have the opportunity to

be a part of the trip to Toronto - Niagara Falls, May 17 to 19, 2019. It is a wonderful

opportunity to explore a little part of Canada with friends, and experience many awesome

activities. The memories made are everlasting, and allows students to see that school can

be about more than just learning in a classroom. The trip will cost approximately $500,

which is all inclusive. This means most meals, all activities, hotel, and transportation.

Activities include: CN Tower, Eaton Centre, Casa Loma, Spanish Whirlpool Aero Car,

Journey Behind the Falls, Bird Kingdom, White Water Walk, Rainforest Café, Niagara

Hornblower (former Maid of Mist), Ripley’s Believe it or Not!, and a Clifton Hill Fun Pass

(mini-golf, rides, etc.). As this is a considerable amount of money, students are

encouraged to start saving as soon as possible. Registration will be available in the winter

months. Stay tuned.
