The Apprentice of the Year Awards aim to recognise and award apprentices for their exceptional performance and commitment to the building and construction industry.These awards represent an opportunity for employers to motivate and encourage their building apprentices to stand out from the crowd and gain recognition from their hard work and dedication.

Three finalists will be selected for each category from whom one will be announced as the winner.

Judges are selected by Master Builders and no correspondence will be entered into, as the decision of the judging panel will be final.

Entry Requirements

Requirements for all Entries

Conditions of Entry

Applicants will be assessed on their overall standard of achievement and potential, taking all the information provided in the nomination form into consideration.All apprentice entries are free to nominate and must be lodged online at https://www.mbawa.com/awards by the entry closing date.

Address all criteria and attach any additional information. Please include photocopies of testimonials and/or awards, trade results and trade certificates. Please ensure as much information as possible is provided in the entry as the judges review the submissions to determine the winners of each category.

• A completed entry form, via the online awards system through https://www.mbawa.com/awards• A description of the apprentice that addresses the judging criteria (Max 1 page per criteria)• Supporting documentation (e.g. copies of results, awards & experience references)• Please provide one (1) head shot at a resolution of 300dpi, image size of 210mm x 297mm in jpeg format. The photo will be displayed at the awards night, so please provide a high-quality, respectable image• Photos of physical examples of apprentice’s work conducted to be reviewed by the judging panel• A synopsis/letter from the Apprentice detailing the most interesting work completed under their apprenticeship, or what they are most proud of. In particular, noting unusual projects or work undertaken displaying a high level of skill.

All forms must be fully completed, declared and received by the closing date of entries. Master Builders WA reserves the right to refuse any entry, withdraw incomplete entries or remove entries which do not meet the minimum criteria.

1. The judges must be satisfied that the entrant meets the criteria established for the awards. 2. Apprentices must be registered with the WA Department of Training & Workforce Development.3. All documents submitted remain the property of Master Builders. 4. Any material supplied with the entry may be reproduced in media releases, publications, websites and other promotional material at the discretion of Master Builders. The entrant indemnifies Master Builders against any claims in respect of copyright. Master Builders and associated media accept no responsibility for incorrect details, spelling or other incorrect information stated on the entry forms. The quality of the submission will impact on the standard of promotion able to be provided. 5. Judges decisions are final, and no correspondence will be entered into. 6. Judging will be based on written submissions, face to face interview and/or telephone interview.7. Master Builders can remove a nomination for any reason that may affect the reputation of or cause embarrassment to the Association or the Awards. 8. All Apprentices must be available for the allocated judging time(s) at the request of Master Builders. At least 1 week’s written notice will be provided. 9. All submitted entries must include a completed declaration (check box) confirming that the entrant (company nominating) and nominee (apprentice nominated) provides their approval for the entry to be submitted.

Judging Criteria

A panel of three independent industry Judges (representatives of the building and construction industry familiar with and holding experience in training and apprenticeships) will review each entrant’s submission and attend one judging onsite visit of each apprentice entered, before deciding upon one winner and two finalists for each category.

• Trade skills• Non-academic awards, achievements or achievements related to the apprentice’s trade• Attention to detail

• Personal skills• Relationship to fellow workers and contractors• How the nominee communicates at all levels on a construction site (e.g. with employer, supervisor, other workers, contractors etc)

• Ability to think laterally• Ability to interpret instructions (verbally & written)• Ability to show initiative

• Photographs or physical demonstrations of the apprentice’s work• Employer or lecturer references

• References from supervisors to fellow workers, showcasing communication through different levels of experience• Speaking to fellow workers at the onsite judging visit

Mark Allen Memorial Trust Fund Apprentice Safety Award

This award recognises the overall best building and construction industry apprentices across all categories who have demonstrated commitment to their training. Applicants will be assessed on their overall achievement in studies and on-the-job training.This award category is presented at the state-wide Apprentice of the Year Awards only.

This award recognises female apprentices who are employed in a construction trade.Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer during the calendar year.

This award category seeks to acknowledge a 1st or 2nd year apprentice who has significantly shone through, either from improvement and hard work, commitment to the employer, staff or other.This award is not based on academic ability but purely it is an acknowledgement from you to a worthy and well deserving apprentice.

This award recognises indigenous apprentices who are employed in a construction trade.Candidates may be from a Group Scheme or directly indentured to an employer during the calendar year.

This award recognises construction trade apprentices from a Group Scheme or direct indentured during the calendar year who have demonstrated high standards of safety and commitment to safety on the job.

These categories recognise employers or trainers of Apprentices within the building and construction industry, during the calendar year.

Employer Award Categories

Recognises the building and construction industry employers who are committed to training. Applicants will be assessed on their overall commitment to providing training to employees/ apprentices.This award category is state-wide only, meaning that any regional entries will need to be entered into the Apprentice of the Year Award as this category will not be included in the Building Excellence Awards

Head contractors that have achieved good results in employing trainees and apprentices during the past financial year, in accordance with the Government Building Training policy, and in relation to the Department of Finance’s Building Management and Works’ projects will be invited to make an entry for the Award.This award category is state-wide only, meaning that any regional entries will need to be entered into the Apprentice of the Year Award as this category will not be included in the Building Excellence Awards.
