Mobility is among the main topics for our contemporary and our future, therefore, there is a great need of people working with dedication and competence. Being a Transportation Designer in this scenario means being able to make the dream of joining work and passion come true. IED Torino offers this chance to people with a great passion for cars and will to learn design techniques. Our aim is to take students at the core of design world, making them learn about innovative thinking and how to approach, develop and finalize the design of a car exterior and a car interior. Turin is the perfect city for this course, because it is the world capital of car design, and it was the birthplace of the most important design houses and car companies of Italy. The city offers the chance to get the whole network of Car Designers to come to IED sharing their abilities with our students for classes, lectures, workshops or for recruiting young talents.
The Master course focuses on offering a chance to study by simulating a real work experience, both individually and as a team. Since 2004, IED presents its concept car as a world premiere at Geneva International Motor Show, the world’s most important display of car design, and it is the only Design school showing there a full scale model every year. The goal to is present a prototype that has been imagined, designed and sculpted entirely by the students of the Master course, in collaboration with a company. Moreover, during the Motor Show students have the opportunity to meet today’s best designers that will play a very important role in their job placement.
The future of mobility is a theme that is transversal to many sectors. While the complex contemporary job market within the automotive field requires professionals with a specific training in terms of global view on the vehicle, driving systems and experience, ergonomics, and human-machine interaction, the main topic is even wider than that.It involves highly diversified skills, such as those related to Transportation Design, Product Design, Sound Design, Interaction Design and New Media. This is the reason why IED developed a broad and complex vision on this topic, creating special occasions in which students of different locations and fields are engaged in the development of projects and ideas related to movement - of individuals, goods and information - vehicles, user experience and services. This vision is the result of all the activities that IED has been promoting for years, confirming the leading role played by the Institute. It involves the most important brands in the automotive sector and other companies connected to the world of on-field mobility.
For a deeper understanding of this course, get an insight into the students’ activities and projects by exploring the activities carried out by the students. Take a look at the projects carried out by the former classes:

The Master course in Transportation Design is an advanced training program designed for providing specific analytic, critical and methodological skills aimed at the creation of innovative and stunning vehicles.
Due to its international identity and to the mix of different backgrounds, the Master course features an open-minded approach to design. In an increasingly demanding labour market, the course sets itself up as an incubator for tomorrow’s professionals and, thanks to an on-going relationship with companies and design centres, it contributes to the creation of very sought-after profiles. Over the two years on a full-time basis, the Master course represents a unique training offer, because it not only prepares students in the Transportation Design field, but it also allows them to specialise in Car Interior Design and User Experience and in Car Exterior Design.
Many companies choose to share their values and expertise with IED Master students in order to find a different, fresh, and, above all, multidisciplinary point of view. Some of our Alumni shared with us their experience:

Ricardo Campos OrtegaIED Alumnus“I’m very proud to be part of the first IED class that worked with Honda for the Final Thesis, in which we created TOMO, our vision of a fun car for 2025 shown at the 89th Geneva Motor Show. Working with a such a big brand as Honda gave us the opportunity to meet and work with professionals from their studios in Japan and Germany. Our brief was to imagine a fun driving experience for young people for the next 6 years. Keeping that in mind, as team we decided to approach the challenge with a unique way to develop the project, we imagined the world in 2025 with an extensive research, which led us to create a manga story of an specific character and his life in said time. This approach allowed each one of the team to develop different solutions and ideas that better adapted to our vision of the future, then we presented each one of our ideas to Honda’s design team and they selected the most suitable proposal. It was a big challenge taking the chosen proposal and turning it into a real car, working together we were able to create a simple and pleasing design being coherent with Honda’s design language.
Working on a real brief was an invaluable lesson, because we were asked to create a car as production-ready as possible. Usually, as students we are relatively free while creating new concepts and designs, however, with TOMO we experienced the design process and the creation of a concept as they happen in the real automotive world. It was an amazing experience, we learned from each other in the team and we grew together as designers.”
Nicolas ChoIED Alumnus“I was lucky enough to be part of the first class with a focus on Car Interior Design as a major element of the Transportation Design Master thesis. Having as teachers mainly professionals with a background in automotive interior design was a fantastic springboard from which I could learn and develop. I lived invaluable few months developing as Final Project the Hyundai Kite buggy, the first IED vehicle presented at at the Geneva Motor Show. I’ve been lucky enough to work with a strong brand such as Hyundai, highlighting the main differences between student designs and real
professional output in studios. With only 5 months to deliver a concept car for an international motor show, work was fast-paced with many design avenues explored until the final design was fixed. A good balance between an aesthetically-pleasing exterior form and an interior with the right packaging solutions with good ergonomics, was a must. It was a fully-immersive design experience between teams of exterior and interior designers, sharing and developing ideas continuously. Balancing each students’ design opinions to culminate into one concept, as well as dealing with feasibility and adapting the design on the fly was a fantastic learning experience. It taught me as an Interior Designer the importance of communication through team-work, adaptability during the design process and made me understand the manufacturing constraints that must be considered in automotive design.”
METHODOLOGY AND STRUCTUREThe Master course in Transportation Design leads participants in mapping a project method articulated in specific steps.
The didactic pathway smoothly integrates theoretical knowledge, experience on the field and visits to company premises and manufacturing plants in order to improve awareness on technologies and processes.
PROGRAMME
1ST YEARThe first year gathers students coming from different backgrounds, providing shared theoretical and design basis. Final goal of this part of the course is the production of 1.4 scale models. Key-element is the Design Process: from the idea to the final product, going through the important choice of proper tools, software and skills for project development.
Car Design• Interior Design• Exterior Design• Sketching• Adobe Photoshop• Vehicle Engineering
3D Modelling• Alias Automotive• Autodesk Maya• Clay Modelling
Supplementary subjects• History of Design• Project Communication• Design Management• External Visits
2ND YEARAt the end of the first year, participants have the possibility to choose between two majors: Car Exterior Design or Car Interior Design and User Experience. Students receive a commission for a concept car from a real Design Centre, having the chance to get involved in a true work environment. They work on the same project, but focusing on different aspects, dealing with some mutual discipline and workshops, which provide in-depth analyses about Advanced Design and Interface Design, in order to explore and experiment with new scenarios and sectors that are close to Transportation Design. Students discuss and collaborate in order to produce their own project, dealing with all the different stages of the drafting and with the problems faced by a style centre, the final objective being the production of a full size scale model. They also focus on the interiors of the car using the most advanced technologies to develop interactive platforms and interfaces. They first deal with planning and timing by facing a real case study, then they work on the design phase with the concept creation.
The final model consists in a unique mock-up joining the efforts of all the group.
Car Exterior Design• Exterior Design• Aerodynamics• Advanced Graphic Techniques
Car Interior Design & UX• Interior Design• UX Design• Color & Trim
Supplementary subjects• Advanced Clay Modelling• Advanced Drawing Techniques• Advanced 3D Modelling• Project Management• Portfolio
