I.MSinClinicalInvestigationProgram:Overview
Mission
TheMSinClinicalInvestigationdegreeprogramprovidesclassroomandmentoredresearchexperienceinclinicalresearch,preparingitstraineesforcareersinclinicalinvestigation,bothinacademicmedicineandthealliedhealthsciences.Theprogrampreparestraineestobecompetitiveinvestigatorscapableofgainingextramuralfundingfortheirclinicalresearchprojects.ThecurriculumoftheMSCIfocusesonthetheories,models,competencies,methods,andtoolsusedbyinvestigatorswhoconductbench-to-bedsideandbedside-to-communitytranslationalresearch.CandidatesfortheMSCIdegreewillelectoneoftwoareasofemphasisor"tracks".Track1emphasizestheinheritedbasisofhumandisease,mechanism-orientedclinicalresearch,andbench-to-bedsidetranslationalresearch.TheTrack2emphasizesepidemiology,healthservicesresearch,andbedside-to-communitytranslationalresearch.TheprogramisdesignedtosupportamentoredresearchexperienceforfellowsandjuniorfacultymembersattheUniversityofUtahSchoolofMedicineandotherhealthsciencedepartments.

CreditHours Thirtycredithourswillberequiredtograduatefromtheprogram.Studentsmusttakeatleast20creditsofcoreandelectiveclassroomcourses.Inaddition,studentswillenrollforcreditsfortheirmentoredclinicalresearchprojects.TheexpectedtimetocompletionoftheMSCIdegreeistwoyears.

Curriculum
ThecurriculumfortheMSCIprogrambeginsinJulywithafour-weekintensiveintroductorysession.Studentsinbothtrackstakeagroupofcommoncorecoursesinepidemiology,datamanagement,bioethics,biostatistics,andgenetics.Aftercompletingthesummersession,studentsparticipateinadditionalcoreandelectivecoursesinfallandspringsemesters.OurcoursesaredescribedundertheSchoolofMedicineClinicalResearchCenter(MDCRC)headingintheUniversityofUtahCatalog.Themajorityoffallandspringclassesbeginat5:30p.m.toreducetimeconflictswithclinicalresponsibilities.EachClinicalInvestigationstudentmaytailorhisorherprogramofstudytofitindividualresearchinterestsandgoals,andmayincludecoursesofferedbyotherdepartmentswithcomplementarycurricula,e.g.HumanGenetics,OncologicalSciences,BiomedicalInformatics,orPublicHealth.

SupervisoryCommittee
Astudentstartingtheprogramwillidentifyaprimaryresearchmentor.Inmostcases,thementorisfromthestudent'sdepartmentorareaofclinicalexpertise.Theprimaryresponsibilityformonitoringtheprogressofstudentsthroughtheprogramwillliewiththeprimaryresearchmentorandthesupervisorycommitteemembers.Whenthestudentisreadytodefinehisorhermaster’sproject,thestudentwillidentifyacommitteechair,oftenthesameasthementor.ThestudentwillselecttwoadditionalfacultymemberstoservewiththeirmentorontheirMSdegreesupervisorycommittee.Atleastonememberofthesupervisorycommitteeshouldbeafacultymemberwithexpertiseinresearchmethodology,usuallychosenfromtheMSCIcorefaculty.

ResearchProject TheMaster'sprogramisintendedtotrainindividualsintendingtopursuecareersasindependentclinicalinvestigators.Ifthestudentisinafacultypositionortransitioningtofaculty,andifthestudenthaspriorpublicationsthatwillsupportagrantproposal,thepreferredculminatingprojectofthementoredclinicalresearchexperiencemaybethepreparationandsubmissionofanNIHcareerdevelopmentapplication(e.g.K23,K08)oranequivalentfederalorfoundationcareerdevelopmentgrant.Astudentwhoisnotinapositiontosubmitacareerdevelopmentgrantshouldselectthesecondoptionfortheformatoftheresearchproject,amanuscripttobesubmittedtoapeer-reviewedresearchjournal.Inthesemesterthatthestudentgraduates,heorshewillpresentapublicseminarabouttheprojectandsubmitawrittenMSprojectreport.

III.Expectations
TheMSinClinicalInvestigationfacultyexpectthatyou,asastudent,willtakeresponsibilityformakingprogressintheprogram,forcomplyingwithpoliciesofthedegreeprogramandoftheGraduateSchool,andforcommunicatingwiththeprogramfacultyandwithyoursupervisorycommittee.

Enrollment
InordertocompletetheMSprogramwithintwoyears,youshouldplantocompleteabout15credithoursperyear.Inthefirstyear,formoststudents,thecreditswillbefromcoursework.Inthesecondyearyouwillprobablytakefewercoursesandwillearncreditsthroughmentoredresearchprojecthours.MSCIstudentsmustbeenrolledforaminimumoftwocreditseveryfallandspringsemesterfromthetimeyouareadmitteduntilyougraduate.Summerenrollmentisoptional,butsomecoursesmayonlybeofferedinsummer.
ClassAttendance
TheprogramrecognizesthatmostMSCIstudentshavesignificantclinicalresponsibilities.Accommodationsforstudentswithbusyschedulesinclude:offeringclassesintheevenings,makingvideorecordingsofmanycourselecturesavailableforstreaming,andwebposting(ontheCanvascoursemanagementsite)ofinformationneededtocompletecourseassignments.Nonetheless,asastudentyouareexpectedtoattendthemajorityofclassmeetingsandtocommunicateinadvancewiththecourseinstructoraboutclassmeetingsthatyouwillmiss.Studentsenrollinginclassesareexpectedtoplanaheadwiththeirclinicalprogramssothestudent’sclinicalresponsibilitiesdonotconflictwithattendanceinclass.Atthediscretionoftheinstructor,classparticipationmaybeacriterionforearningcoursecreditandforyourgrade.
ParticipationinK-ClubandSeminars
InteractionwithyourpeersintheM.S.inClinicalInvestigationprogramandwithotherresearchersoncampusformspartofyourtraininginclinicalinvestigation.Whileyouareastudentyouwillbeexpectedtoregularlyparticipateinresearchseminarsand/orresearchinprogress(RIP)meetings.TheCenterforClinicalandTranslationalSciencessponsors"K-Club",adiscussionofjuniorfacultyK-awardproposals,meetingonthe2ndTuesdayofthemonthatnoon.TheMSCIprogramalsohoststheirownResearchinProgressseminarseries,whichoccursthe3rdTuesdayofeachmonth.M.S.inClinicalInvestigationstudentsareencouragedtoattendK-ClubandrequiredtopresenttheirMSCIresearchprojectattheMSCIRIP.Studentswillbenefitfromattendingfinalprojectpresentationsbyotherstudentsgraduatingfromtheprogram.InformationaboutstudentfinalprojectpresentationsandotherinterdisciplinaryandtranslationalseminarswillbedistributedtotheMSCIstudentemaillistandpublicizedontheCCTSeducationwebsite.

StudentProgressReviews Eachstudent-mentorteamwillbeaskedtocompleteanannualprogressreviewattheendofeveryspringsemester.Theprogressreviewwillincludeareportoncoursescompleted,progressonyourMSfinalproject,ifapplicable,anychangetothesemesteryouplantograduate.Theprogressreportwillalsoincluderesearchactivityincludingpresentations,papers,andgrants.

Courseandprogramevaluations TheMSCIprogramconductsongoingevaluationofitscoursesandoftheprogramoverall.TheseevaluationsarerequiredofusasadegreeprogramapprovedbytheUtahBoardofRegents,andasapartoftheNIH-supportedUtahCenterforClinicalandTranslationalSciences(CCTS).
Attheendofeverysemester,youwillreceiveanevaluationformwithabriefseriesofquestionsaboutthecoursesyouwereenrolledin.Itisveryimportantthatstudentscompletecourseevaluations.Theyevaluationsareusedtoassesssuccessofindividualcoursesandasabasisforcontinuingtoimprovethecurriculumtomeetstudentneeds.Forinstructors,resultsofcourseevaluationsareprovidedtocommitteesmakingrecommendationsaboutthefacultymember'sretention,promotion,andtenure.Yourresponsesareanonymous,butweareabletotrackwhetherthesurveyhasbeencompleted.
MSCIgraduatescanexpecttobecontactedaroundthetimeofgraduationforexitinterviews,andinlateryears,toobtainfeedbackontheoverallvalueoftheprogramontheirresearchcareerprogress.
AnotherwaythattheMSCIprogrammeasuresofthesuccessofthedegreeprogramisbytrackingtheresearchproductivityofformerstudents.WewillobtaininformationaboutyourresearchfundingandpublicationsthroughelectronicmeanssuchasUofUtahOfficeofSponsoredProjects,NIHwebsites,PubMed,andScopus.AfteryougraduatewewilloccasionallygetintouchtorequestyourupdatedCV.

MSProjectandGraduationDeadlines
TheUniversityofUtahrequiresthatspecificprocessesbefollowedasyouproceedthroughformingacommittee,defendingaproject,andgraduating.Therearedeadlinesforeachofthesesteps.TheMSCIprogramhaspreparedanoutlineofthisprocess,andtheprogrammanagerwillhelpyounavigate.Ultimately,though,itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytotaketheinitiativeandplanaboutayearaheadforcompletionofyourMSprojectandgraduation.

IV.SupervisoryCommitteeandMSProject
MSResearchProjectFortheMSdegreeinClinicalInvestigationculminatingresearchproject,one
oftwoformatsareacceptable,either1)acareerdevelopmentorothergrantapplicationor2)amanuscriptreportingonacompletedresearchproject,tobesubmittedtoapeer-reviewedjournal.Thechoiceofformatdependsonthestudent'spriorresearchexperienceandnear-termresearchgoals.AstudentwhoholdsorisabouttoreceiveanappointmentasanInstructororAssistantProfessorandhasseveralpriorresearchpublicationsisinagoodpositiontowriteandsubmitacareerdevelopmentgrantapplication.Forafellowwithfewornopriorpublications,themanuscriptformatisusuallytherightchoice.Fortrack1studentswhoareconcurrentlyearningabasicsciencePhD,thestructureoftheculminatingactivitiesfortheMSCIwilldiffer,asdescribedunder‘FinalExam’.
TheMSCIprogramemphasizesthedevelopmentofstrongclinicalinvestigationskillsbasedonasolidfoundationinresearchmethods.TheMSprojectshoulddemonstrateapplicationofskillsandcompetenciesacquiredthroughthecoreandelectivecourseworkthatthestudentcompletedintheprogram.ThereforeitisrecommendedthatthestudentcompleteoneyearofcourseworkbeforedefiningtheMSprojectandenrollingforresearchcredithours.
MSCIstudentsareexpectedtostartandcompletetheMaster'sresearchprojectwhileenrolledintheMSCIprogram.Iftheculminatingprojectisagrantproposal,aproposalsubmittedbeforebeginningtheprogramisnotanacceptablefinalproject,norisagrantproposalthatwillbesubmittedwithsomeoneotherthanthestudentasprincipalinvestigator.Iftheprojectisamanuscript,aresearchprojectsubstantiallycompletedbeforebeingadmittedtotheMSCIprogramisnotanacceptablemaster'sproject.

SupervisoryCommitteeThegraduateschoolrequiresthatasupervisorycommitteeforamaster's
degreeconsistsofaminimumofthreeandmaximumoffivefacultymembers.Thecommitteechair,andamajorityofcommitteemembers,mustbetenuredortenure-linefaculty.Ifthemostsuitablecommitteemembersdonotmeetthisrequirement,thestudentmaycontactMSCIleadershipregardingpetitioningforanexception.
Thestudentisresponsibleforidentifyingmembersforhisorhersupervisorycommitteewhohavesubjectmatterandmethodologicalexpertisethatsuittheresearchproject.Atleastonememberofthesupervisorycommitteeshouldbeafacultymemberwithexpertiseinresearchmethodology,usuallychosenfromtheMSCIcorefaculty.Aniterativeprocessisrecommended,i.e.thestudentmeetswithprospectivecommitteememberstodevelopandrefinearesearchprojecttopicandmethods,andthenfinalizesthecommitteemembership.Thestudentwillcompletethe"MSProjectPlanandCommitteeForm"andobtainsignaturesfromthecommitteemembers.Thisformmustbesubmittedandapprovedbeforeastudentcanregisterforresearchcredits.

Additionally,uponsubmittalofthisform,studentswillberequiredtosign-uptopresenttheirprojectattheMSCIRIP.
Fortrack1bstudentswhoareconcurrentlyabasicsciencePhD,therewillusuallybesomeoverlapbetweenthemembershipoftheMScommitteeandmembershipofthePhDcommittee.However,thesedononeedtobeidentical.FortheMSinClinicalInvestigationcommittee,studentsarestronglyencouragedtoincludeaclinicianandamemberoftheMSCIcorefaculty.
Therolesofthegraduatecommitteemembersaredescribedonthe“ResearchProjectandGraduationProcess”formfoundontheMSCIwebsite(“UsefulLinks,”page15).Thelevelofinvolvementwillvary,buteachcommitteemembershould,atminimum,1)contributetoandapprovetheresearchdesign2)reviewandprovidesignificantfeedbackonthedraftofthefinalprojectwrite-up,and3)attendthefinalprojectpresentationandparticipateindiscussion.Ifthefinalprojectisamanuscript,inmanycasesthecommitteememberswillhavealevelofinvolvementthatmeritsauthorship.
MSProjectDefense
Eachstudentwilldefendhisorherfinalprojectatapublicseminar.Thestudentisresponsibleforschedulingadateandtimewhenallcommitteememberscanbepresent.Thefinalprojectpresentationmusthappenbeforethe“non-thesisfinalexamdeadline”ofthesemesterthatthestudentintendstograduate.AdraftofthewrittenreportofthefinalprojectmustbedistributedtothecommitteemembersandtheMSCIprogramaminimumoffourweeksbeforethedefense.Attheoraldefense,thestudentwillpresenttheprojectandrespondtoquestionsfromthecommitteeandotheraudiencemembers.Thecommitteemaychoosetoexcusetheaudienceforclosedsessionquestioningofthestudentand/orforinternalcommitteediscussion.
FinalExamination TheFinalExaminationfortheMSdegreeinClinicalInvestigation,asrequiredforthegraduateschoolunderM.S.degreenon-thesisoption,willincludeboththewrittenreport(i.e.thecareerdevelopmentproposalormanuscript)andtheoraldefense.Fortrack1bstudentswhoareconcurrentlyearningaclinicalsciencePhD,theclinicalrotationreportwillserveasthewrittenportionofthefinalexamfortheMSdegree.Theoralportionoftheexamwilltakeplaceatthesametimeasthestudent’sdefenseofhisorherPhD.
Thestudentwillpassifthesupervisorycommitteefindsthatthewrittenandoralcomponentsdemonstratemaster's-degreelevelskillsinclinicalandtranslationalresearch.Apapercopyofthefinalreportmustbesubmittedtotheprogramwithatitlepage.AsampleofthetitlepagecanbefoundontheMSCIwebsite(“UsefulLinks,”page15).
