MASTER OF SCIENCE IN FINANCE 2016 PROGRAM REPORT

> WELCOMEIt is my pleasure to present the 2016 Master of Science in Finance (MSF) Program Report. This report provides an overview of the program, profiles our students and partners, and shares employment statistics from the first graduating class.

My colleagues and I launched the MSF program in January 2014 after a nearly two-year development period involving many of our leading faculty and administrators. From the beginning, we have been committed to building a world-class program that enhances Georgetown University’s reputation in four major respects. First, we designed a rigorous, global curriculum to be taught by many of our most experienced and distinguished professors. Second, we established demanding admissions standards. Third, we developed a best-in-class MSF Center for Career Strategy and Professional Engagement, which provides customized career services that are unmatched in business education today. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, we embraced cutting-edge technology to increase the program’s educational quality and to attract bright and motivated students from all over the world who need the flexibility to work outside the Washington, D.C., area.

Our students bring remarkable diversity in terms of their academic training and business experience. For example, some have MBAs from top universities and have worked at the most preeminent firms in the world while others have no business training or experience. Moreover, some seek to advance in their current career fields while others pursue a career change made possible by obtaining the MSF degree. What all of our students share is a passion for mastering the most challenging aspects of business education, an aptitude for learning this material quickly, and a desire to be leaders and entrepreneurs.

We believe these features truly set us apart, and we are proud of the accomplishments of our MSF students and alumni. We have set the bar high with this report, but I am convinced that we will continue to raise it.

I invite you to visit our website, msf.georgetown.edu, and follow us @GeorgetownMSF to learn more about our program.

2 | 2016 PROGRAM REPORT

THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM Throughout the 21-month program, students complete six core and four selective courses in addition to one on-site and one international residency. Altogether, students complete 32 credits to receive the MSF degree.

ANYTIME MEDIAOur technology-intensive program has flipped the classroom in an innovative way. Each week, students work through the course material — at a time of their choosing — using our Anytime Media on the course website. The primary component of this technology

is the Professor Presentations, a sequential series of high-fidelity videos in which professors speak directly to students with a virtual whiteboard. Each Professor Presentation comes with a searchable transcript so students can find key words or phrases and, with one click, be taken to the corresponding moment in the video.

Our Anytime Media also consists of practice problems, team discussion posts, and other material.

MSFLIVE IN THE BLENDED CLASSROOMThe weekly culmination of each course unit is the 90-minute MSFLive session where students participate in a case discussion with their professor and classmates. Cases involve real-world business problems faced by actual firms and require students to apply what they have learned from the assigned readings and Anytime Media. Moreover, they often use what they have learned to address pressing business challenges in their daily work.

With our Blended Classroom, students can attend MSFLive sessions on campus or online and receive the same educational experience. Despite their geographic distance, students and professors interact as if they are next to one another. We see this combination of our cutting-edge Anytime Media and Blended Classroom as the future of education at preeminent universities around the world.

> ON-SITE AND GLOBAL RESIDENCIES

2016 PROGRAM REPORT | 7

ON-SITE RESIDENCY AND CASE COMPETITIONDuring the on-site residency, students engage in an in-depth, team-based case competition and develop their leadership, strategy, and communication skills through seminars on important business topics. They then apply these skills — and what they have learned in their prior MSF coursework — to address the case questions and to create a presentation that is judged by subject matter experts.

This residency also allows students to deepen their relationships with classmates and professors and to become more familiar with their home on the Hilltop.

GLOBAL RESIDENCY AND CONSULTING PROJECT In Georgetown McDonough’s tradition of educating students to become globally minded leaders, student consulting teams work together to solve a pressing business problem facing an international firm. Students collaborate on the project for six to seven weeks, regularly corresponding with the firm’s executives, before traveling abroad to present recommendations in person. Firms vary from large, multinational corporations to small nonprofits. MSF students most recently have worked on projects for Barclays, Coca-Cola, and Cummins Power in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In addition to their company presentations, students visit local historical and cultural sites and learn about the connections between our international consulting partners and local communities. Many also stay abroad after the residency for personal travel.

TIFFANY WATSON, MSF ’15, B.S. Finance, Georgia State University

“ I recently was promoted to a senior business analyst at my current company. The Career Center helped me to define a proposal for the new role, show my employer how I could fill existing gaps, and negotiate a salary that aligned with similar positions in the industry. I could not have made this internal move without the Career Center’s guidance.”
