VISION OF IIT DELHI“To contribute to India and word through excellence in scienti fi c and technical educati on and research, to serve as a valuable resource for industry and society and to remain a source of pride for all Indians.”

MISSION OF IIT DELHI“To develop human potenti al to its fullest extent so that intellectually capable and imaginati vely gift ed leaders can emerge in a range of professions.”

ABOUT IIT DELHIIIT Delhi, a premier insti tute of higher educati on learning in India has received internati onal acclaim as a front runner in the fi eld of technical educati on. The teaching in IITD is designed to expose the students to a number of fi elds and impart skills required for tackling industrial problems. Laboratory experiments are extensively used to relate theory with practi cal knowledge. With these skills the students are able to create, evaluate, modify and analyse the systems and provide innovati ve soluti on to industrial problems. IITD off ers a variety of courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS @ IIT DELHIThe Department of Physics started in 1961 and is one of the leading applied physics departments known for its materials science, nanotechnology, thin fi lms, photonics & semiconductor technology based programs nati onally and internati onally. The department has internati onal research reputati on, with research collaborati ons across the globe. Research here is traditi onally organized in areas of Condensed Matt er Physics, Thin Films & Nanotechnologies, Applied Opti cs & Fiber Opti cs, Spectroscopy, Plasma and Theoreti cal Physics.

We are one of the largest department in IITD with 40 faculty, running three M.Tech., a M.Sc. and a B.Tech. teaching programs alongside Ph.D. program. Our faculty is nati onally and internati onally recognized through many awards/fellowships such as SS Bhatnagar awards, ICO Galileo Galilei awards, MRSI medals, INSA Fellows, OSA Fellows and so on. Apart from excellent research faciliti es for research groups and individuals, the department has many cutti ng-edge-technology instruments and central faciliti es.

We hope that this brief introducti on to our Department of Physics at Indian Insti tute of technology Delhi has conveyed to you the exciti ng developments and progress here with which you could have the opportunity to become involved.

AN OVERVIEWThe Solid State Materials program, started in 1964, encompasses science & technology of materials: their synthesis, characterizati on and applicati on to devices. The course structure gives students a strong foundati on in materials science and engineering, with emphasis on the fundamental scienti fi c and engineering principles which maintain relevance over ti me and emphasizes on the material structure, processing, properti es, and performance correlati on of various materials. The students are encouraged to apply their hands-on-laboratory experience to real life problems during their fi nal year projects. With proper balance between theory and practi ce, this program prepares the students to take challenges in various R & D units and Industries involved in material science & engineering, semiconductor technology, nanotechnology and interdisciplinary areas.

M.Tech. (SSM) – Asset to IndustryINDUSTRIAL TRAINING & PROJECTSINTERNSHIPS The Department encourages students to apply

for individual internships with employers before commencing their Major Project and Placement.

In 2009/2010 insti tuti ons have been recepti ve to applicati ons for internships, with many of these converti ng to off ers of full ti me employment.

Summer internships are an eff ecti ve way to att ract talented students to your organizati on. Hiring IITD students is always a wise investment.

An SSM alumnus has been VP Intel USA and recipient of Disti nguished Alumni Award.

FINAL YEAR PROJECTMajor Projects provide students with professionally focused learning experiences during their fi nal year of study. Project units uti lize real-world, authenti c acti viti es and challenges in a supporti ve and collaborati ve environment. Projects may be externally-sourced industry and community projects, competi ti ve-research-based projects, and in some cases, student-initi ated projects. Each student is encouraged to identi fy their personal strengths, develop project management, team work and personal skills, and to apply their learning to realize project objecti ves.

PROJECTS (2010-2011) Defect mediated ferromagneti sm in ZnO nano

structures. Growth and opti cal study of ZnO/Au

nanocomposites. Nanowire based metal oxide gas sensors. Thermoelectric and electron transport in nano-

tellurides. Investi gati on of low frequency noise in GaN and

fabricati on of Schott ky diodes. Growth and chacracterizati on of GaN nanowires
