In the first 12months, AXIA has developed dissemination and communication tools, including thedesign, development, and updating of the project website, profiles in social media, poster presentations, and flyers. In addition, AXIA organized a training session forpartners on data management, compiled an initial data management plan, andpresented it to the EU NanoSafety Cluster WG-F. Finally, AXIA is researching the marketenvironment of target sectors for the dissemination and exploitation of the projectresults.

CETMA is in charge of the development of thermoplastic matrix smart materials. Theself-responsive functionalities of interest, i.e. self-deicing based on Joule effect heatingand self-protection from electrostatic discharge, will be embodied in severaldemonstrators for automotive and aeronautic sectors. CETMA has already preliminarilyassessed the compatibility between the electrical conductive nano-materials, mainlyCNTs, and the addressed matrices. The optimal parameters of the melt mixing processwere defined to obtain a uniform filler distribution. For most of the producedcompounds a quite good dispersion of CNTs was proved by means of SEM analysis andrheological, mechanical and electrical measurements.

BSRIA is responsible for the tasks whichaim to demonstrate economiccompetitiveness and evaluateenvironmental impact of the new productsin comparison with state of the artpractice. In the first year of the project,BSRIA has successfully defined models of

existing products, which will be used as abenchmark for results of the MASTROproject. Additionally, BSRIA is leading thehealth and safety evaluation andregulatory compliance of MASTROmaterials, as well as standardization andtraining related activities.

DIAD Group is end user for the automotive/motorsport applications. In the fist 12months of project, DIAD led the definition of the industrial needs and the description ofthe use cases to be demonstrated in MASTRO, setting targets to be achieved in terms ofperformance, compliance to legislation, performance indicators and verification criteriato be adopted. An initial concept of the ICT platform model for these demonstratorshas been defined with Alkè, Pinout and CETMA. Mastro project has been disseminatedto motorsport builders at the Cesana-Sestriere race, an event of the European MountainClimb Championship counting the participation of more than 10,000 enthusiast andexperts. In the frame of the “industrial replicability in other sectors”, DIAD Group hasstarted to approach representatives of mining, truck, electronics and production systemssectors.

During the first 12 months of theMASTRO project, the main workperformed by CITEVE/CeNTI was toidentify technical specifications for carseats textiles, research and select materialsand additives suitable for fibre extrusionprocess, and support the identification ofprocess parameters for compounding. In

addition, they conducted compoundscharacterization for rheological behaviour(capillary rheology, MFI) to evaluate thesuitability of the developed compoundsfor the spinning step, electrical resistancecharacterization of produced compounds, and preliminary study of electronicsintegration and textiles structures.

In the first year of MASTRO project, IPC defined a methodology to carry out modellingactivities for piezoresistivity and the Joule effect. This numerical workflow couples thenano- and micro-scale to allow homogenization. The first simulations calculated thepercolation threshold at the nano-scale for a material with CNT. Likewise, the effectiveelectrical conductivity can be estimated on this scale. It is important to integrate thermaleffect to improve microstructure prediction. In the following months, the modellingmethodology will be completed, taking into account several parameters, such as aspectratio, distribution, cluster structure, etc.

Pinout Solutions is in charge ofarchitecting and implementing the ICTplatform of MASTRO project. Over the last12 months, Pinout Solutions has designedand tested the first proofs of concept ofthis Cloud-based tool, always looking forsynergies among the different industryuse cases. Based on an Industry 4.0

approach, the platform will enable end-users to manage, analyze and visualizedata, as well as interact with the 11demonstrators of the project. One of thekey activities of this stage has been thesystem integration, developing APIs andsoftware connectors to link the end-user’stechnologies with Cloud standards.

The University of Alicante (UA) conducted characterizations on the cement pastes forthe transportation infrastructure sector. These pastes incorporate carbon basednanomaterials in an aqueous phase. In collaboration with Applynano Solutions, UA hasworked on the development of stable water based suspensions testing conductivity, mechanical properties, setting time, and other properties of the resulting material.

To develop the smart functionality in composites required for the aerospace sector, theAMRC studied mixing carbon nanotubes (CNT) and graphite into resin. Theseimproved the conductivity of the composite by mixing in the nanomaterials into liquidresin at different proportions using a range of mixing conditions and different types ofmixer. Samples were cast, cured and electrical resistance was measured. This showedthat the percolation threshold was 0.3% and this knowledge will be applied tocomposites to test and develop the smart responsive capabilities in the next stage of theproject.

UNISA is spearheading the design ofanti/de-icing nanocomposites, with thedevelopment of a flexible lightweightheater paper, based on exfoliated graphite, and its integration in structural panels. Theflexible resistive heater film/paper ischaracterized by a combination ofunique properties with nine times fasterpower application compared to existing

Pad thermal systems with resistanceheating employed in modernaircraft/automotive components. Thefeasibility of the de-icing performance wasdemonstrated through a series ofexperiments. Furthermore, UNISA isworking on the physicochemical treatmentof carbon nanotubes to develop the designof self-healing epoxy nanocomposites.
