Basic Unit Equivalencies

Distances• 12 inches = 1 foot

• 3 feet = 1 yard

• 5280 feet = 1 mile

• 100 centimeters = 1 meter

Times• 60 seconds = 1 minute

• 60 minutes = 1 hour

• 24 hours = 1 day

• 52 weeks = 1 year

• 365 days = 1 year

Times• 4 quarters = 1 year

• 2 semiannual periods = 1 year

• 1 biannual period = 2 years

Basic Idea Behind Converting

Multiplying by 1 does not change a number.

We just need to pick the right form of the number 1 to multiply by.

Use dimensional analysis to convert 8 yards to feet.

Use dimensional analysis to convert 520 days to years.

Use dimensional analysis to convert 350 feet per second to miles per hour.

Use dimensional analysis to convert 9 square feet to square inches.

Use dimensional analysis to convert 782 cubic inches to cubic yards.

Given 15 porks per 2 pigs and 5 pigs per 3 pokes, convert 40 porks to pokes.

Given 13 morks is 1 gloe, 5 gloes is 1 flit, 7 kits is one lonk, and 10 lonks is 1 gall. Convert 90 morks per kit to flits per gall.
