Picking up where she left off

Senior middle blocker Kelsey Cave ended the 2015 season on a strong note averaging 2.00 kills per set while attacking at a .318 clip over the final 11 matches and has picked up where she left off to start 2016. Cave collected career highs of 18 kills and eight blocks, while hitting .441 in the season-opener at Milwaukee for the first outing by a Brave of more than 15 kills and at least eight blocks since 2005. An all-tournament selection at all three of Bradley’s tournaments to start the 2016 campaign, Cave is third in the MVC in hitting percentage (.378) and is averaging 2.71 kills along with 0.97 blocks per set.

strong debut

Freshman setter Erin Olson was one of two freshmen in the starting lineup for the Braves in the season opener at Milwaukee and collected four kills, 49 assists, seven digs and four blocks. Olson is the seventh freshman setter to start a season opener over the last 25 years for the Braves, with her four kills, 49 assists and four blocks all tops among freshman setters in a season opener during that span. She collected her first career double-double against UTEP Sept. 3, finishing with 19 assists and a season-best 10 digs.

efficient effort

Senior middle blocker Kelsey Cave is among the league leaders in attack percentage, hitting at better than a .300 clip in eight of 10 outings in 2016. Cave, who has hit over .300 in 16 of her last 21 matches going back to last season, tied the Bradley record for most kills (13) without a hitting error in the Aug. 27 outing against Akron. Her .812 hitting percentage against Akron ranks as the second-best hitting percentage in school history

behind Lindsay Stalzer’s record .867 set against Indiana State on Sept. 14, 2002. Cave has two outings this year with 10 or more kills without a hitting error after collecting 11 kills with no errors in a four-set win against Nebraska-Omaha (Sept. 9).

Pepsi Invite All-Tournament Honors

Sophomore libero Abby Ihrke and senior middle blocker Kelsey Cave both earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the season-opening Pepsi Panther Invitational in Milwaukee, Wis. Ihrke took over as Bradley’s libero and averaged a team-best 3.82 digs per set while helping the Braves limit their three opponents to a .138 hitting percentage. She opened the year with a career-best 19 digs. Cave hit .545 for the weekend and averaged 3.64 kills and 1.45 blocks per set in the three outings.

Strength in numbers

Bradley returns a bulk of its lineup from 2015 in 2016 with the returning players combining for over 80 percent of the team’s kills last fall. In fact, Bradley’s returners combined for 60 percent of the team’s aces and nearly 70 percent of the blocks

from last year. In addition, the Braves will benefit from the return of redshirt-junior Melissa Hoerber and redshirt-junior Rachel Jones. Hoerber played in the first two matches of 2015, before suffering a season-ending concussion and is the team’s active career leader in digs. A member of the 2013 MVC All-Freshman Team, Jones has missed the last two seasons due to medical reasons.

Road Warriors

For the first time since joining the Missouri Valley Conference in 1983, Bradley Volleyball will not play a non-conference home match. In fact, the Braves will open the season with 13 consecu-tive road or neutral site matches with the Sept. 30 home opener against Southern Illinois the latest Bradley will play a home opener since 2004 (Oct. 1). The last time the Braves had a stretch of at least 13 road/neutral contests was 1985 (14 consecu-tive) and this season’s opening stretch will mark the first time in program history Bradley will start a season with 13 consecutive matches away from home.

Young combo

Sophomores Erica Haslag and Allison Turner paced Bradley in kills last year with Haslag’s 295 kills ranking as the fourth-best season total by a Bradley freshman in school history and Turner adding 218 kills of her own. The Braves had two freshmen with 200 or more kills for just the third time in program history. In fact, Haslag became just the sixth freshman in school history to lead the team in kills and had the most kills by a Bradley frosh since Marika Giguere had 326 kills in 2000. Turner’s 218 kills rank 15th among Bradley freshman marks and the duo’s 513 kills rank as the second highest combined kill total by a pair of Bradley freshmen behind Jenny Pavlas (301 kills) and Joy Ostendorf (251 kills) total of 552 kills in 1993.

Leading the way

Junior outside hitter Jamie Livaudais is Bradley’s active career leader in kills with 450 career kills. Livaudais was just the fourth Brave in the last 10 years with 400 career kills prior to the start of their junior year and first since Amy Angelos had 510 kills between her freshman and sophomore

seasons of 2010 and 2011. Over the last 25 years, only 13 other Bradley players have topped 400 ca-reer kills before the end of their sophomore season and Livaudais was the 19th Brave overall to reach 400 kills in their first two seasons. She currently ranks 43rd all-time on Bradley’s career kills chart and is 50 kills from reaching 500 for her career. Bradley has not had an active player with 500 or more career kills since the 2013 campaign.

climbing the chart

Junior Afton Sobasky has split time at setter for the bulk of her first two seasons, before assuming the primary setting duties late in the 2015 season. She is currently 13th in school history with 1,451 career assists and is 11 assists from catching for-mer teammate Jessica Teel for 12th all-time on The Hilltop. Sobasky is the first Brave with consecutive 500 assist seasons since Madison Kamp (2011 & 2012) and is the first Brave with 35 kills, 500 assists, 14 aces and 165 or more digs in back-to-back years since Bradley Hall of Fame member Sam Hardwick had four consecutive seasons with those numbers from 1998 through 2001.

Sophomore Taylor Thiele ranked fifth on the team in kills in 2015 with 121 and tied for third in 2015 with 165 digs. Last year she also added 15 aces as she became the first Bradley player since Cindy Novak in 1992 and 1993 to tally 100 kills, 150 digs and 15 or more aces in both their first and sophomore seasons. As a freshman in 2014, Thiele was Bradley’s eighth freshman to tally 200 kills and 200 digs. Thiele notched her 400th career kill Sept. 9 against Cornell and needs three digs to reach 500 in her career.
