The price of plate heat exchangers has actually dropped over the past 25 years.

This is not a coincidence, but rather the outcome of Alfa Laval’s ongoing push

for development. Today, as a result of our cost-cutting innovation, you receive a

highly advanced product at a very competitive price.

Dedicated efficiencyAlfa Laval is the clear leader in the de-velopment of plate heat exchangers, orPHEs. With an extensive R&D programdedicated to thermal products, we deliverstate-of-the-art equipment at progres-sively lower prices.

Our innovations throughout the years, forexample the herringbone pattern or thetitanium plate, have let us create smallerplate packs that handle an equivalentheat load. This has reduced material andmanufacturing costs – at a sizeablesavings to you.

One step to greater savingsOnly Alfa Laval uses a one-step tech-nique for pressing all plate sizes, whichreduces material stress and createsexcellent heat transfer properties. Platespressed in this manner handle shocks, vibrations and high operating pressures, but they do so without sacrificing heatefficiency. Moreover, the one-stepmethod yields comparable strengthwith a much thinner plate – as thin as0.4 mm for titanium and stainless steel.

Distributing benefitsAnother advance is our distribution area, the “chocolate” pattern on the platethat enables parallel flow. When flow isparallel, the same type of plate can beused throughout the pack, with alternateplates rotated 180º. This makes foreasier assembly than plates with diago-nal flow, since there is no need to sortor keep track of different plate types.

Besides simplifying assembly, the distri-bution area creates an even flow overthe whole plate surface. No dead spotsare created, which means fouling is keptto a minimum. This leads to more effi-cient heat transfer, with fewer platesneeded as a result.

Sealing out costsAdded to our plate expertise are seven-ty years of working with gaskets. Whileother suppliers buy third-party prod-ucts, Alfa Laval has a dedicated unit forgasket development. Our gaskets can

last years longer than the market aver-age, providing high reliability at a lowerlife cycle cost.

On task and on handThe expertise behind our innovationscarries over into our dealings with ship-yards. Many of our employees havefirsthand experience in the yard business, which means they understand its com-plex needs and drivers.

Alfa Laval has a large local organizationwith qualified support in your local lan-guage. In addition to several sites inEurope, we have sites in China, Koreaand Japan. In fact, we are the only supplier with local production in everymajor market, which means more accu-rate deliveries and a flexible supply. By dedicating expert resources to youryard and its needs, we give you strengthand confidence in serving your cus-tomers.

Cost reduction through innovation

Setting the trendOver the years, shipbuilders and ship operators haveseen a steady reduction in the price of PHEs. This isthe result of technical development, led by Alfa Laval.

Built at Samsung Shipyard, South Korea, each of the eight 7700 TEU container vessels

uses the following Alfa Laval PHE products:

3 x M30 for central cooling3 x M30 for lube oil cooling

2 x M15 for turbo charge cooling2 x M6 for stern tube cooling

1 x Engard

A preciseadvantageDealing with heat and cold is a precision business. The slightest change in

a heat exchanger plate can have tremendous effects on thermal dynamics

and flow. This is why Alfa Laval ensures unsurpassed precision – not only in

our plates, but in our whole manufacturing process.

Keeping it all in lineBetter alignment creates a compact,leak-free PHE. This is why, for example, our openable PHEs are fitted with a five-point alignment system, which holds theplates both horizontally and vertically.

Alfa Laval’s one-step technique forpressing plates creates optimal alignmentproperties, no matter what the type ofPHE or the size of the plate. While multi-ple pressings add strain, causing weak-ness and faults, the one-step methodyields a well-formed plate with muchbetter tolerance. Each plate is checked asit comes off the press, with an ultravioletscan to find the smallest imperfection.

For absolute certainty, all assembledPHEs are pressure tested to reveal theslightest leakage. Precision alignment is therefore assured, from the time ofpurchase through years of use andmaintenance.

An exacting processThe effort and care in our pressingprocess can be seen in more than ourplates. Alfa Laval’s exact way of workingaffects every aspect of PHE manufacture.

All steps in production can be tracked, thanks to a detailed numbering system. Each plate receives a unique ID, and eachtesting instrument and pressure flange isalso numbered. This leads to unparalleledtraceability throughout the manufacturingprocess.

Moreover, the attention given to ourplates is also given to the sealing. By developing specialized gaskets, glues, and new methods of welding and brazing,we ensure seals that go the distance. Each one is highly durable – and preciselymatched to the needs of the application.

Plate heat exchangers for marine applications

7

With a compact design and unmatchable thermal

characteristics, Alfa Laval plate heat exchangers

are a clear choice for the engine room and beyond.

Their many advantages apply to a wide range

of applications on board.

In the

Lubricating oil coolingThe Lubricating Oil Cooler (LOC) removes heatfrom lubricating oil after it has passed throughthe engine. Oil is pumped via a filter to the pis-tons, bearings, and crosshead, and also to thecamshaft system in the case of a four-strokeengine. Once through the engine, the oil is col-lected in the oil pan, from which it drains backinto the bottom tank (dry sump) or crankcase(wet sump).

8

engineroomand throughout the ship

General oil heatingIn fuel and lube oil cleaning processes, the oilmust be heated to the required temperaturebefore entering the centrifugal separator. Thisensures an optimum separation effect. In addi-tion, it is necessary for fuel to be pre-heatedbefore it can be injected into the diesel engine.

Central coolingThe Central Cooler (CC) removes heat from thecentral cooling system. Heat is generally takenfrom the Jacket Water Cooler, Lubricating OilCooler and Scavenge Air Cooler, as well theauxiliary engines and ancillary equipment. Freshwater is drawn through the CC by pumps andmixed in a regulating valve to ensure a constanttemperature in the system.

RefrigerationA refrigerant condenser and evaporator areinstalled in refrigerant cooling systems, such asthose found on “reefers”, fishing ships or shipswith air conditioning. The hot refrigerant entersthe condenser, where it is condensed by meansof seawater. It is then led to the receiver, fromwhich it runs through an expansion valve andenters an evaporator. This evaporator can beeither a liquid/air system or a liquid/liquid sys-tem (chiller).

Plate heat exchangers for marine applications

Steam heating and condensingThe Steam Condenser/Dumping Condenser(DUC) condenses the surplus steam producedin steam generating systems, e.g. an exhaustgas boiler. Steam is fed into the DUC througha pressure-controlled overflow valve, whichcontrols the steam pressure in the steamgenerating system.

Jacket water coolingThe Jacket Water Cooler (JWC) removes heatfrom the cylinder liners, cylinder covers andexhaust valves. Cooling water is pumped fromthe engine outlet to the JWC, from which thecooling water returns to the engine. A regu-lating valve at the outlet of the JWC keeps thecooling water from the engine outlet at a fixedtemperature, based on information from anengine cooling water sensor

Gas condensationThe LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) condenser isused to condense cargo vapour and return it tothe cargo tank. This is necessary because thegas, compressed into a liquid during transport, evaporates when heated by external factorssuch as air, water and sun. Evaporated gas issucked from the top of the cargo tank andcompressed by a compressor, after which it iscondensed in the LPG condenser.

Tank cleaning water heatingThe Tank Cleaning Heater (TCH) heats the freshwater or seawater used in cleaning the tanks ofproduct and chemical tankers. The water ispumped to the heater, which uses steam orthermal oil from a boiler as a heat source.Steam enters the TCH through a regulatingvalve and leaves as condensate, returning tothe steam/feed water system. The heatedwater is then pumped through piping to thewashing machines on deck.

9

Volatile Organic CompoundThe Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) recov-ery plant handles the large quantities of VOCgases produced during the handling and trans-port of crude oil. Traditionally, VOC gases havebeen vented into the atmosphere, which repre-sents both a loss of energy and an environ-mental threat. In a VOC recovery plant, thesegases are purified and liquefied to serve as fuelfor the onboard engines or boilers, or to bereinjected into the crude oil tanks. Alfa LavalPHEs are used in the plant’s condensation andcooling stages.

While they form the largest part of our heat exchanger business, gasketed plate

heat exchangers from Alfa Laval are anything but common. From their unique

five-point alignment system to their advanced gasket materials, they combine

flexibility and performance with a low life cycle cost.

Accessible benefitsLike all Alfa Laval PHEs, our gasketedmodels contain single-pressed plateswhose design and material can be cus-tomized to suit a wide range of applica-tions. In addition, they open easily forinspection and maintenance.

Using a unique five-point alignment system, our gasketed PHEs retain theirprecise alignment through multipleopenings and closings. The system’scarrying and holding bars secure bothhorizontally and vertically, ensuring areliable seal throughout the plate pack.

Advantage by designThe gaskets in our PHEs derive from 70 years of experience and in-housedevelopment. They are available in awide range of materials, all of whichhave been carefully designed to meetapplication demands.

Gaskets are moulded in a single piece, which gives them an exact geometrythat avoids vulcanization weak spots. And in the unlikely event of a gasketfailure, their double sealing system prevents cross-contamination, thanks tospecial venting ports that route leakageoutside the plate pack.

Most importantly, Alfa Laval gaskets last up to several years longer than theindustry average. This increase in gasketlifetime means a huge reduction in lifecycle cost.

Suited to the taskThe design of Alfa Laval gaskets strikesa unique balance between performanceand ease of use. In most cases gasketscan be clipped on, which offers greatadvantages for the user when cleaningor assembling the unit.

Clip-on gaskets have advantages athigher temperatures, since they sit betterwhen heated and will not slide or pinch.

But in other applications, where clip-ongaskets become unmanageable orwhere duties cause gaskets to swell, aspecial gluing technique is preferred.Alfa Laval’s two-component oven-curedepoxy provides unsurpassable adhesion, even in high-pressure duties.

ApplicationsGasketed PHEs are suited to a widerange of onboard applications, including:

ALF – Automatic backflushing seawater filterEasy to install and service, the ALF filterprevents clogging and increases reliability. It features an automatic self-cleaningprocess, which removes collecteddebris without disrupting the liquid flow.Besides having a low flushing pressureand pressure drop, the ALF filter offersgood corrosion resistance and requiresno extra pump capacity.

Port filterThe Alfa Laval port filter is a protectionstrainer installed in the seawater inletport of the PHE. A cost-effective solu-tion for preventing clogging, it allowsmaintenance from the pressure plateside of the PHE without dismantling ofthe inlet pipework.

Instrument flangeThe Alfa Laval instrument flange fittingmakes it possible to monitor the inletand outlet operating conditions of thePHE. Venting and drain valves can bemounted if required.

Plate heat exchangers have many advantages over the older shell-and-tube design. Above all, they reducemaintenance and require up to 80% less space thanshell-and-tube constructions. But this is not all. They also lower operating costs thanks to their highly efficient heat transfer.

PHEs – a savings in themselves

In addition to our gasketed models, Alfa Laval offers a wide range of other plate

heat exchangers that handle even the toughest conditions. With several series

to choose from, we make it easy to meet your application demands.

Fully welded – AlfaRexCompact and thermally effective, AlfaRexPHEs feature a closed construction witha fully welded seal. Their gasket-freedesign makes them ideal for use withaggressive media and in duties involvinghigh temperature and pressure.

AlfaRex PHEs are laser-welded in onlytwo dimensions, with bellows connec-tions that increase fatigue resistance. In addition, our low-impact weldingtechnique requires 75% less heat, which

reduces the heat-affected zones on theplate. The end result is a durable PHE,able to handle temperatures from -50°Cto +350°C and pressures up to 40 bar.

Applications:Gas condensationEvaporation of clean fluidsRefrigerationCargo heating liquidGeneral heating/cooling with high pressures or temperatures

Copper brazedPerforming as well as traditional installa-tions three times as large, our brazedPHEs provide compact stability at acomparatively low price. Their gasket-free design allows work with aggressivemedia, while their frameless constructionreduces size and weight.

Either copper or nickel can be used forthe brazing, which creates a tough andthorough seal. Brazed PHEs can there-fore handle temperatures from -160°Cto +225°C, as well as pressures fromfull vacuum to 32 bar.

Applications:Mineral oil heatingGeneral water heatingRefrigeration

Fusion brazed – Alfa Nova Alfa Laval was the first to braze PHEs,and our innovation continues with theintroduction of patented AlfaFusionbrazing. Our fusion-brazed Alfa NovaPHEs feature plates and brazing in 100%stainless steel, which allows excellentpressure fatigue resistance and can handle temperatures as high as +550°C.
