The Circumcision of Christ and St. Basil the Great

The great mystery of the Son of God becoming man

shines brightly on this Feast day. Like any Jewish male,

Jesus endured the ritual of circumcision, which was a mark

of becoming an heir to the promises to Abraham. However,

Jesus is not just an ordinary Hebrew child under the law.

He is the Eternal Word who spoke the world into existence.

Nonetheless, He humbles Himself to be circumcised in His

flesh as was His forefathers. Christ fulfilled the promises of

the Old Testament, extending them to all who believe in

Him, the Messiah. “…you have come to fullness of life in

Him, who is the head of all rule and authority. In Him you

were also circumcised with a circumcision made without

hands, by putting off the body of the flesh in the

circumcision of Christ…” (Colossians 3; 10-11)

True circumcision is not physical, but spiritual and

moral; of the heart and spirit, not tearing our garments, and

bodies, but our hearts. On our part, let us purify our hearts,

cutting away sin and corruption, and uniting ourselves to

Christ. The more we unite ourselves with Christ through

prayer, the Divine Liturgy and Sacraments, the more we

participate in Christ and become like Him. That is how we

should begin the New Year, and all the days of our lives.

Then our faith we be more than one of Sundays and Holy

Days of obligation, but a participation in the life of

Christ, who, became one of us in order that we might

become like Him in holiness.

St. Basil the Great (329-379) organized monasticism

into communities based on the Evangelical Counsels, and

having everything in common. He wrote 2 sets of rules;

55 Long Rules and 313 Short Rules based on Scripture.

These rules are the cornerstone of what we call today the

‘Basilian way of life’. With the acceptance of Byzantine

Christianity in Rus’-Ukraine in 1988, Basilian monasticism

took root, and became a part of Kyivan spirituality and

history of the nation. In 1617, the Order of St. Basil the

Great was formed to unite the independent monasteries

united to the Catholic Church (1596), and to strengthen

the Union among the faithful. The Basilian Order would

flourish and expand, serving the Byzantine Catholics

of Eastern Europe, and later in North and South America.

St. Basil’s holiness did not go unnoticed. In 370 he was

consecrated archbishop of Caesarea, taking upon himself

the task of preserving unity in the Church, refuting the

Arian heresy, and strengthening the Christian spirit in the

faithful. He wrote a treatise On the Holy Spirit, and the

Divine Liturgy celebrated 10 times a year in our Church on

the Eve of the Nativity, St. Basil, the Eve of the Theophany,

the 5 Sundays of Great Lent, Holy Thursday and Holy

Saturday is attributed to him. Externally, the Liturgy of

St. Basil does not differ from the Liturgy of St. John

Chrysostom. The prayers are longer and theologically

deep. St. Basil died on January 1, 379, and is a pillar of

fire and great Father of the Church.

Tuesday Evening Faith Formation Sessions!

Starting Jan. 15, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. — St. Josaphat Church Classroom

Bishop Robert Barron's newest study program The Mass

Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Barron and you’ll be transformed through insights on

this most privileged and intimate encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ.

See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it

resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and, most

importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of

Jesus through the Holy Eucharist.

The Mass will help you understand how to fully, consciously, and actively participate in the

source and summit of the Christian life.
