DISCUSS (Thursday) Answer the following discussion questions:

• Which strategy do you find yourself using the most? Why do you prefer this strategy?

• What attributes of the coins help you recognize each? • What coins could you use to buy a snack that costs 55 cents? • What other combinations of coins could you use to have the same value as a

quarter? As a dime? As a nickel?

Coin Sorting Directions: Give your child a small handful of coins and have him or her sort them into groups (a group of pennies, a group of nickels, etc.) Ask the following questions:

• Which coin do you have to most of? The least? • How many pennies do you have? Nickels? Dimes? Quarters? • Which coin is worth the most? The least? • What is the value of a penny? Nickel? Dime? Quarter? • How many more pennies do you have than quarters? • How many pennies and dimes do you have altogether?

• Coin Sort – (materials: coins & mat to sort) Give student a few coins at a time. Allow student to sort into the correct area of the sorting mat. Ask students to count all the pennies and write the amount of money. Repeat with the nickels, dimes, and quarters.

RDW Problem Solving Method Monday

A farmer counted 12 bunnies in their cages in the morning. In the afternoon, he only counted 4 bunnies in their cages. How many bunnies disappeared from their cages? Read: I know that a farmer is counting some bunnies. I know that the total number of bunnies is 12. During the day, some of the bunnies disappeared, and the new total is 4. I have to figure out how many bunnies disappeared. Draw: Write: 8 bunnies disappeared. Tuesday Ben has 16 baseball cards before a card show. After the card show, he had 20 baseball cards. How many cards were added to Ben’s collection? Read: I know that Ben collects baseball cards, and that he went to a card show. Before he went to the card show, his total number of cards was 16. After the card show, his total number of cards was 20. Since 20 is bigger than 16, I know he got some more cards at the card show. I need to figure out how many cards he got. Draw: Write: 4 cards were added to his collection. Wednesday Tamra saw 10 cheetahs at the zoo. She saw 8 more leopards than cheetahs. How many leopards did she see? Read: I know Tamra went to the zoo and saw cheetahs and leopards. I know that she say more leopards than cheetahs. I know she saw a total of 10 cheetahs, and 8 more leopards than cheetahs. I need to figure out how many leopards she saw.
