On Wednesday May 6 th , Parents and students were invited to attend ET Crowle’s first Math Go Round “Do We Measure Up” Open House, which was held from 4:00 and 7:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium. During the Round, the parent and the child had an opportunity to view a progression of learning pertaining to the Measurement strand from Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8. Parents examined their own child’s work and progress as well as examples of students work in French, Science and Geography all related to the measurement strand. The purpose for our Math Go Round “Do We Measure Up” was to share an understanding of the different level of students’ achievement in Math, using the Ontario Ministry’s expectations and the achievement chart. Also students had to articulate what they have learned from this particular concept, and what they can do to perform better. Parents found tasks related directly to real world activities in the areas of “Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication and Application.” This gave the parents an opportunity to dialogue with their child as it was not an interview evening with teachers. Attendees were asked to complete an “Assessment As Learning” rubric, and then compare it to the teachers “Assessment of Learning”. Both students and teachers assessment and the task were sent home the following day so it was a continuation of dialogue that took place the evening before and implement teachable moments in everyday life. Many community members, administrators and various guests were impressed by the organization of the event and how informative the student led walk was to parents. Some parents commented on the fact that assessing a child against the rubric and success criteria was not an easy or simple task! Please take a few minutes to look at various pictures captured throughout the evening. Ghada Sadaka Principal MATH GO ROUND
