As you know expressions are formed from
variables and constant .The expressions 2y-5 isformed from the variable y and constants 2 and 5.The expressions 4xy+7 is formed from variables x
and y and constant 4 and 7.

INTRODUCTION
There are number of situations in which weneed to multiply algebraic expressions: forexample, in finding area of a rectangle , thesides of which are given as expressions. A
monomial multiplied by a monomial alwaysgives a monomial. While multiplying a
polynomial by a monomial, we multiply everyterm in the polynomial by the monomial.

TERMS , FACTORS ANDCOEFFICIENT
Take the expressions 4x+5. This expressions is made upof two terms , 4x and 5. TERMS are added to form
expressions. Terms themselves can be formed as theproduct of factors. The term 4x is the product of itsfactors 4 and x. The term 5 is made up of just one
factors , 5.The numerical factor of a term is called itscoefficients. The coefficient in the term 7xy is 7 and
the coefficients in the term is -5x is -5.

MONOMIALS , BINOMIALSAND POLYNOMIALS
Expressions that contains only one term is calledMONOMIAL. Expressions that contains two term iscalled is BINOMIAL. One or more terms with non-zero
coefficient is called a polynomial.Example of monomial: 3xy, -7z, 10y, -9, 82mnp, etc.
Example of binomial: a+b, 4l+5m, a+4, 5-3xy,etcExample of polynomial: a+b+c+d, 3xy, 7xz-10, 2x+3y+7z,
etc

Q ue. Construct:a. 3 binomial with only x as a variables:Sol: 3 binomials with only x as a variables may be
taken as 2x-3, 3x+2,5-x.
b. 3 binomial with x and y as variables:Sol: 3 binomial with x and y as variables may be
taken as 3x+4y,xy-5,5x-y.

LIKE AND UNLIKE TERMS
Like terms are formed from the same variables
and the powers of these variables are the sametoo. Coefficients of like terms used not be thesame. While adding polynomials, first look for
like terms and add or subtract them; thenhandle the unlike terms.

EXAMPLES1. Look at the following expressions:
7x,14x,-13x,7y,7xy,-5yxLike terms from these are:(i) 7x,14x,-13x are like terms.(ii) 7xy and -5yx are like terms.
2. Write two terms which which arelike: 7xy
Ans. Two terms are: - 5xy & -3xy.

Q ue. 1 Why are 7x and 7y not like?Ans. 7x and 7y have different literal factors,
so they are not like.
Q ue. 2 Why are 7x and 7xy not like?Ans. 7x and 7xy have different literal factors, so
they are not like.
Q ue. 3 Write two like terms for 2lSol. Two terms are 3l,-4l.

POINTS TO REMEMBER1. A combination of constants and variables
connected by + and is called an ALGEBRICEXPRESSIONS.
2. The several parts of the expressionsseparated by + or sign are called TERMS.
3. The sum or difference of several like terms isanother like term whose coefficient is the
sum or difference of those like terms.4. If x is any variable and m , n are positive
integers.
