About the Singapore Math Method

This math course is based on the textbook series Math in Focus: Singapore Math, which was developed using the principles of the highly successful math program in Singapore. Singapore math method first drew international attention in 1999, when the first Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS) was conducted. In that year, and in the following testing years, students from Singapore led the world in math achievement. The Math in Focus series was written to bring the methods of Singapore math instruction to American students.

Why did we choose Math in Focus: Singapore Math?

There are several core principles that are important for you to know and to emphasize as you work with your student in this math course.

Fewer Topics; More DepthIf you skim the Table of Contents at the front of Math in Focus, you will see that most of the chapters focus on basic operations, fractions, and proportional reasoning. This is intentional. By the end of this course, your student will have manipulated numbers in so many different ways that he will have a solid foundation in these concepts and will need little, if any, review in subsequent courses. Singapore math courses focus on just a few topics each year, which are taught in depth to assure mastery.

Start with the ConcreteMath in Focus contains many photographs of real objects. No matter what concept is being taught, the Singapore math method always begins with items that your student can experience and manipulate. Only after the concept has been well developed will he move to pictorial representations, and only after the pictorial is understood will he move to the abstract.

For example, when learning to compare length, your student will begin by making towers with connecting cubes and comparing their heights (concrete).

After this, your student will compare the heights of items in pictures, such as these four children (pictorial).

Finally, your student will be asked to compare the lengths of two lines (abstract).

For your student to grasp and master the mathematical concepts presented in this course, it is essential that you follow this progression as you are presenting new material to your student.

Mental MathThe Singapore math method emphasizes the importance of calculating quickly and accurately without the use of pencil and paper. Your student will learn and practice mental math strategies.

Solving ProblemsAccording to Singapore Math philosophy, the primary purpose for learning math is to learn to solve problems. Not only does math provide skills to solve problems involving calculation, but also strategies to solve problems your student might face in life: breaking a problem down into smaller parts, drawing a diagram, making a list, etc. Problems do take more time to solve, so do not skip or hurry through them.

Bar ModelingAnother essential Singapore math tool is the bar model. Bar models are specialized drawings that are used to visualize a problem and organize the information. Your student can use them to see how to find a solution.

You can learn more about bar modeling strategies by referring to the Bar Model Guide, available in the Online Math Manual.

MATH • Before You Begin

ix05M-LM A

Before You BeginThese math lessons are organized differently from other Calvert core courses because they are unit-based and written to the student. However, like other Calvert courses, you will need to work alongside your student and teach the lesson.

PreparationPrepare ahead of time for each lesson. You may want to prepare the day or weekend before so that you have time to gather all materials.

Gather the materials and books listed at the beginning of each lesson. Read the lesson carefully, making sure you understand the concepts and examples. Note the To the Learning Guide sections. These sections will provide additional help for you, including math background, common errors, tips, reteaching strategies, and ideas for how to teach the concept.

When you are ready to teach the lesson, set up a workspace for your student. You will need the materials and books listed as well as paper, pencils, and a computer if you want to use the full-color online lesson manual and online resources.

Warm-upBegin with the Warm-up. The Warm-up reviews previously learned skills, practices mental math, or introduces the lesson. Read the directions with your student. If he has difficulty completing it without help, you may wish to review those concepts.

InstructionAfter the Warm-up, continue with the Instruction section. Read aloud with your student following along. Your student may help read if he is able. Your student should complete the examples as you read them, using manipulatives and performing calculations as needed.

If the Instruction has an opportunity for your student to practice (usually in a section labeled Guided Practice or Your Turn), you may both want to complete the exercise separately. Then you can compare your methods and results. You may identify which solution is more efficient, or simply highlight the flexibility of math—that there can be many different ways to solve the same problem correctly.

PracticeThe assigned textbook and workbook pages are guidelines only. Use your judgment to determine what your student needs to practice and how many of the pages or problems to assign. Be prepared to help your student read and understand the exercises. Your student can use the Assignments checklist at the beginning of each lesson to keep track of what he has completed.

Wrap-upThe Wrap-up briefly summarizes the lesson. Read it together, making sure your student understands the concepts. This will help your student retain the material. You may also wish to reread the Wrap-up right before you start the next lesson as a brief reminder of what was learned the day before.

Looking ForwardSome lessons have a Looking Forward section within the final To the Learning Guide box, which lists materials and/or preparation needed for a future lesson.

Math CheckpointBe sure your student completes the online Math Checkpoint after each lesson, located in the Online Math Manual. Read the directions and choices to him as needed to ensure that he understands what is being asked. The checkpoints will help you gauge whether your student has mastered the concepts. If your student answered a question incorrectly because he did not understand it, rephrase the question and have him answer on a separate sheet of paper. Students are unable to retake checkpoints online. If he made a simple calculation mistake, you may want to have him practice by completing any remaining problems from the Practice section. If he did not understand a concept, you may review or reteach it.

Remember that you know your student’s abilities and learning styles better than anyone else, and this gives you a unique opportunity to personalize your student’s education. Sometimes it will help to explain a concept differently. Other times you may let a skill or concept go for a few days and then come back to it. Push your student to be successful, but not to the point of frustration or anxiety.

Setting Up the Math JournalMath Journal activities are assigned throughout each chapter. Your student should have a designated book for Math Journal activities. Have your student begin each Math Journal activity on a separate page. He should write the date and the lesson number in the upper right corner of the page. He does not need to copy problems or questions unless directed to do so in the activity.

Remember to call the Education Counselors if you have any difficulty with the program or teaching any of the concepts. Our experienced Education Counselors are ready to answer your questions, offer support and encouragement, and provide individualized suggestions for students using our courses. The Counselors are available toll-free at 1-888-487-4652 between 8:00 A.M. and 5:30 P.M. EST, Monday through Friday, or through live chat found on the My Calvert site. You can also contact them by e-mail at any time at [email protected].

Types of LessonsThe math course is divided into 19 chapters. Nine are completed during the first half of the course, and the remaining ten are completed during the second half. Each chapter contains the following lessons:

Chapter OpenerThis introductory lesson presents an overview of the chapter and reviews skills needed for the chapter. It is important to take time for review if your student seems unsure of any of the skills presented in these lessons.

LessonsThe daily lessons present the new concepts in a logical sequence, providing opportunity for practice.

Problem Solving LessonsEach chapter concludes with a lesson devoted to problem solving. Your student will apply skills and concepts to solve the challenging problem-solving activities. The lesson is based on the Put on Your Thinking Cap activities in the textbook and workbook. In some math programs, problems like these are considered enrichment or brain-teasers. In this math program, they are essential. Learning how to think logically and to apply skills and knowledge to solve problems will build your student’s critical thinking skills. Therefore, coaching your student through learning and using problem-solving strategies is essential.

It is recommended that you solve the problems along with your student so that you can model good problem-solving techniques. Also, if you solve a problem in a different way than your student does, you can both benefit from discussing your strategies and why one might be preferable.

It is also essential that these learning times be student-directed. First determine your student’s preferred approach. Does he like to try to tackle the problems alone and only ask for help if needed? Does he prefer solving the problems with you? Children who lack confidence may want you to tell them what to do, but you must avoid this. Your student needs to learn how to solve problems independently. As his abilities grow, his self-confidence will also grow.

Your main role in these sessions is to guide and to encourage. Allow your student to take charge, only turning to you when he is unable to proceed on his own. When this happens, instead of telling him what to do, ask leading questions: “Did you look at this?” “Have you considered that?” “What else do you know?” “What else could you try?” Even if you know he is making a mistake, let him continue until he realizes his own error and corrects it. Encourage him by reminding him that everyone makes mistakes and that making mistakes helps him learn.

While the process may seem painful or even tedious to you, know that allowing your student to engage in this type of mental exploration will not only make him a better math student, but it will also strengthen his reasoning skills and make him a better thinker overall. You can learn more about teaching problem-solving skills in the brief Solving Problems tutorial video in the Online Math Manual.

Review and Test LessonsReview and testing occur at the end of each chapter. The Chapter Wrap Up in Math in Focus provides an overview of the concepts presented in the chapter, and the suggested pages in the Workbook provide additional practice. You may choose to review on one day and take the test the next day, or you may wish to review and test on the same day.

Constructed Responses for Chapter TestsYour student will be asked to write constructed responses to problems on chapter tests. Take some time to explain that when you answer a constructed response question, you answer the primary question of the problem, as well as explain how you found the answer. A constructed response differs from tell about it in that the explanation of a constructed response is written, while tell about it is oral. The explanation of a constructed response can be in the form of word sentences, drawing, chart or table, number sentence, or combination of these. The explanation of a constructed response answers the question: How do you know?

The following problems illustrate four different examples of constructed responses.

Strategy: Draw a picture Jane has 4 heart stickers. She gives 2 heart stickers to Tim. How many stickers does Jane have left?

Jane has 2 heart stickers left First I drew 4 heart stickers Then I crossed off 2 heart stickers and counted how many were left

Strategy: Write a number sentence Emily has 6 flowers. She gives 3 flowers to Carl. How many flowers does Emily have left?

Emily has 3 flowers left I know this because 6 – 3 = 3

Strategy: Use words to describe the answer Mark’s birthday is in the third month of the year. In which month is his birthday?

Mark’s birthday is in March I know this because the first month is January The second month is February The third month follows the second month and March follows February March is the third month so Mark’s birthday is in March

Explain to your student that giving the correct answer is always part of a constructed response, but it is never the only part. Help him as he answers constructed response questions to plan which method he will use to explain how he knows his answer is correct.

If your student is also enrolled in the Calvert core course, the lesson numbers in the Math Manual may not correspond with those in the core Lesson Manual. Also note that the testing schedule in the Math course corresponds to the end of each textbook chapter. If your student is enrolled in the Advisory Teaching Service, you will be instructed to save the chapter tests to submit with the core Test Lessons, which appear after every 20 lessons. See the Testing section in the front of this manual for more detail.

The Role of the Student1. Be prepared for the lesson with a sharp pencil, paper, and all needed materials.

2. Work diligently and put forth your best effort.

3. Complete all work neatly. Write the lesson number in the upper right-hand corner of each paper. Write your name and the date at the bottom left of the paper.

4. Check your work carefully. Correct any mistakes, including mistakes in your writing.

5. Ask questions when you do not understand.

The Role of the Learning GuideThis math program is not designed for independent study. The Learning Guide is a responsible adult (usually a parent) who guides the student through the academic journey. The role of the Learning Guide varies depending on whether the student is enrolled directly with Calvert as a homeschool student, or in a public school and works virtually under the direction of a state-certified Supervising Teacher.

If the student is enrolled as a Calvert homeschool student, the Learning Guide serves as the home teacher who delivers the instruction, makes all instructional decisions, and determines the pacing.

If the student is enrolled in a public school, the certified teacher directs the instruction, determines the pacing, and makes decisions for intervention and enrichment. Even then, the Learning Guide has an essential role in helping the student with daily lessons.

All Learning Guides should follow these guidelines:

1. Plan ahead. Read through the day’s lesson beforehand so that you can gather materials and be familiar with both the subject matter and its presentation. Preparing for each lesson will help you anticipate your student’s questions and judge the accuracy of his responses and reasoning, even if they differ from your own.

2. Supervise the daily lesson, giving instructions and assistance when needed. Encourage your student to complete as much as he can on his own, especially when it comes to solving problems and finding the answers to his own questions.

3. Monitor your student carefully. Determine how much he can do before becoming frustrated or fatigued. Complete some work orally if writing becomes too tedious. Adjust the pacing and quantity of work to match your student’s ability. If your student has mastered a concept, he may not need to complete every assigned page or problem. If your student has difficulty with a lesson, provide more time for discussion, reinforcement with manipulatives, and practice.

4. Encourage your student to use math vocabulary correctly and consistently. This will teach him to communicate effectively about mathematics.

5. Review your student’s work with him. Praise what he does well and help him correct his mistakes. Determine whether your student has mastered the material or needs more review.

6. Have realistic expectations. Know your student’s strengths and weaknesses. Young children may not be able to write or sit for long periods of time. Be patient and encourage your student in his efforts.

Testing

It is your responsibility to administer and supervise all tests. Calvert provides three testing options to evaluate a student’s progress: the Calvert Test Series, the Advisory Teaching Service tests, and Express ATS. If your student is enrolled through a public school program, there may be alternate assessments administered by the school. Please ask your student’s teacher if you have any questions.

Calvert Test SeriesPurchased separately from the full course, each booklet in the Calvert Test Series includes one test per chapter with answer keys. The test questions are objective in nature. These tests are to be graded by you and not sent to Calvert. No records are kept by Calvert, and a Certificate of Completion is not available with the Calvert Test Series.

Advisory Teaching Service TestsThe chapter tests accompanying this course are prepared for students using the Advisory Teaching Service (ATS), which is purchased separately. Even if your student is not enrolled in this service, he is still welcome to use the tests; however, Calvert does not publish answers to these tests. If you prefer to administer tests that come with an answer key, you may want to order the Calvert Test Series, described in the previous section.

The chapter tests in the math course must be sent in groups with each core Test Lesson, as indicated in the Math Manual. Please follow the instructions carefully so that you are sending in all the necessary tests at the correct time.

An Advisory Teacher scores the tests and evaluates student progress. Sending one set of tests at a time allows your student to incorporate the Advisory Teacher’s feedback and suggestions into the next set of lessons and tests. Upon successful completion of the course, Calvert issues a Certificate of Completion to your student. Transcripts of grades are available upon request. Follow carefully the directions for administering and mailing tests if you use the Advisory Teaching Service.

A student may enroll in ATS at any time. The enrollment fee may be sent with the first set of test papers. For more information about ATS, call Calvert Education Services at 1-888-487-4652.

Directions for Administering TestsYou should administer all tests, observing the following rules:

1. You should not put marks of any kind on test papers unless otherwise directed.

2. Test questions must not be shown to your student in advance or discussed unless otherwise directed.

3. The only help that is permitted during the test is the reading and explanation of the test questions. Students should not be coached or assisted in answering the questions.

4. Unless specified, your student should not use any lesson materials, including textbooks, during testing.

◆ write his name on the paper ◆ write the test name in the upper right-hand corner ◆ write the subject name at the top

Submitting the TestsFor Calvert to provide you and your student with the best and most efficient service, we ask that you please do the following before placing the test papers in the envelope for mailing:

• Gather all required test papers as directed. Be sure to include all the parts of each test lesson. • Check that your student has followed all test directions exactly as given.• Check that all papers are written so that they can be easily read.• Check that your student has put his first and last name on each page.• Arrange the test papers so that all papers for each subject are in order. Do not staple papers or use

paper clips.• Put no additional marks of any kind on test papers unless otherwise instructed.• Trim the rough edges of the test pages.• Place all test papers in the envelope supplied for this purpose. (See Frequently Asked Questions

for information about envelopes.)• Write your student’s name on the outside envelope flap and send it to Calvert.

Express ATSStudents who are enrolled in the Advisory Teaching Service may also submit test materials to Calvert electronically. This service, by utilizing scanning technology, eliminates the need to mail paper tests, thereby saving postage and negating the possibility of tests being lost in the mail. The requirements for this service are as follows:

FormatTo participate in this service, you must be able to scan and convert documents into Adobe Acrobat format (PDF). Some scanners have the capability to save documents directly in PDF format; however, if your scanner does not, you may refer to the Adobe Acrobat website for information on software that will accomplish this task for you. Please visit http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat for more information.

File Submission and LabelingThe Express ATS program utilizes black-and-white copies of the Advisory Teaching Service tests. These may be downloaded from the Learning Guide Portal on My Calvert. If it is not possible for you to combine the test pages into a single document, you may send multiple PDF files in a single e-mail. Files should always be labeled clearly, noting the test number and, if needed, the page number (ex., “Test 60 Page 1”). Please ensure that you submit all pages of the test; do not send incomplete tests or parts of tests.

LegibilityStudent writing must be legible, clear, and dark enough to produce a clearly-scanned document. Calvert’s Records Department will verify that the scanned test is properly prepared before assigning it is sent to an Advisory Teacher. If it is not acceptable, the Records Department will e-mail a request that the paper test be sent by mail.

Important: While there is no due date for each set of tests for students using the Advisory Teaching Service, Calvert expects a student to complete the course within twelve months. Tests should be submitted at regular intervals. If a student needs more than one year to complete the course, you must contact Calvert Education Services and provide a full explanation of the need for the requested extension.

Submitting the First Test

1. Scan the Student Information Questionnaire and all parts of Test Lesson 20, converting all documents into PDF format. If the work is completed in another format, including a word processing program, it must be printed and scanned as a PDF file. Before scanning tests, ensure that spelling tests, compositions, and any other pieces of your student’s work are placed first, followed by the test pages in their correct order. All files must be labeled so that the page numbers and/or page sequence of the document are clearly indicated. If you have any difficulty scanning the documents, please contact our Technical Support department at 1-800-288-7983 for assistance.

2. E-mail the Student Information Questionnaire, all parts of Test Lesson 20 as an attachment to [email protected]. Include your student’s full name and the test number in the subject line of the e-mail.

3. If the scanned test is satisfactory, the Records Department will assign an Advisory Teacher who will remain with your student for the duration of the course.

4. The graded test and a personal letter with grading comments from the Advisory Teacher will be returned to you by email in approximately five business days.

Subsequent tests will be submitted and graded according to this procedure throughout the school year.

Certificate of Completion(applicable only to students enrolled in the Advisory Teaching Service)

Calvert awards a Certificate of Completion to students enrolled in the Advisory Teaching Service who satisfactorily complete all tests with no failures. One make-up test per test is allowed in case of a failure. Calvert reserves the right to withhold a certificate if, in the opinion of the Advisory Teacher and the Manager of Student Services, the work does not meet Calvert standards.
