Name: Hanna Fisher Date: 04/12/2020 Discipline: Math Grade Level: 2nd TOPIC: Geometry LESSON FOCUS: Identifying 2D shapes and their attributes STANDARD(S): 2.G.1 Identify trapezoids, rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, octagons,
parallelograms, quadrilaterals, cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, triangular prisms, rectangular prisms. Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.
OBJECTIVE(S):
• The student will identify attributes of 2-Dimensional shapes (trapezoids, rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, octagons, parallelograms, and quadrilaterals)
ASSESSMENT:
• Proficiency scale • Pre/post assessment (attached in Weebly)
MATERIALS:
• https://myonlinelessons.weebly.com/math-lesson-1.html • 2-D attributes graphic organizer • Prezi Presentation • Comparing Shapes Worksheet
PROCEDURE: *All procedures included in Prezi Presentation*
2
• Anticipatory Set- I will go over the proficiency scale and have students first mark where they feel they are at when identifying shapes and attributes. At the end of the mini unit, I will have them score themselves again so we can see the improvement or what needs to be worked on more. The students can print out the proficiency scale from the Weebly website.
• On the first slide of the Prezi, I will have multiple pictures of shapes shown. Students will download the pre/post assessment from my Weebly Website and write down how the shapes are similar or different from one another. This will be a pre-assessment. They can use these sentence starters for help:
o I know that ________ is different than ___________ because… o I know that __________is similar to _____________ because… o This shape has _________ but this shape has ___________...
• I will do a voice over of the Prezi explaining the vocabulary needed for this
lesson. o Quadrilateral: Any shape with FOUR straight sides
▪ Square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid, all parallelograms o Parallel: means there is an equal distance between the lines or
sides of the shape. They will never meet. o Parallelograms: quadrilaterals that have opposite sides that are
parallel ▪ Square, rectangle, rhombus
o Attributes: characteristic or feature of an object that allows for grouping of it with other similar objects
▪ Attributes of 2D shapes are sides and vertices • Side- Outside edge of a shape • Vertices- where the sides meet to form corners
• I will continue the Prezi by describing the attributes of these 5 different shapes
o Trapezoid- 4 sides, 4 vertices, 1 pair of parallel sides o Rhombus- 4 sides of equal length, 4 vertices, both opposite sides
are parallel (2 pairs of parallel sides) o Pentagon- 5 sides, 5 vertices o Hexagon- 6 sides, 6 vertices o Octagon- 8 sides, 8 vertices
• After the Prezi, the teacher and the students will download and fill out a 2-D shapes attributes graphic organizer together. (Graphic organizer and
3
video of me filling it out attached in Weebly website) • For independent practice, the student will do a worksheet comparing two
shapes to decide which shape was drawn correctly and why. (Attached in Weebly Website)
• For the students’ assessment, they will do the same thing as their pre-assessment. They will describe differences and similarities of the shapes shown. (Attached in Weebly website)
MODIFICATION/DIFFERENTIATION: • Provide manipulative shapes for those who need • Voice over and closed captioning

PROCEDURE:
• Anticipatory set- 2D shape review video • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIIidcCw92g • Anticipatory Set- On the first slide of the Prezi, I will have multiple pictures
of 3D shapes shown. Students will download the pre/post assessment from my Weebly Website and write down how the shapes are similar or different from one another. This will be a pre-assessment. They can use
5
these sentence starters for help: o I know that ________ is different than ___________ because… o I know that __________is similar to _____________ because… o This shape has _________ but this shape has ___________...
• I will do a voice over of the Prezi explaining the vocabulary needed for this lesson.
o 3 Dimensional shapes- solid figures or objects that have three dimensions – length, width and height.
▪ They have thickness to them o Bases: The surface a solid object stands on, or the bottom line of a
shape ▪ The base gives the shape its name. ▪ ex) triangular prism has a triangle shaped base
o Faces: Flat or curved surface on a 3D shape o Edges: Where two faces meet o Vertices: Points where two or more edges meet. o Cube: 6 Faces, 8 Vertices, 12 Edges o Rectangular Prism: 6 rectangular faces, Rectangular base, 12
edges, 8 points o Triangular Prism: 5 Faces, Base is shaped like a triangle, 9 edges,
6 vertices o Cone: 1 circular base, 1 curved surface, 1 vertex, 1 edge (Where
base and surface meet) o Cylinder: 2 Circular bases, 1 curved surface, no vertices, 2 edges
(Where the 2 bases meet the curved surface) o Sphere: One curved surface, No edges or vertices!
• After the Prezi, the teacher and the students will download and fill out a 3-D shapes attributes graphic organizer together. (Graphic organizer and video of me filling it out attached in Weebly website)
• For independent practice, the student will do a worksheet comparing two 3D shapes to decide which shape was drawn correctly and why. (Attached in Weebly Website)
• For the students’ assessment, they will do the same thing as their pre-assessment. They will describe differences and similarities of the 3D shapes shown. (Attached in Weebly website)

Math Mini Lesson #3
Name: Hanna Fisher Date: 04/16/2020 Discipline: Math Grade Level: 2nd TOPIC: Geometry LESSON FOCUS: Shapes in real life
STANDARD(S): 2.G.1 Identify trapezoids, rhombuses, pentagons, hexagons, octagons,
parallelograms, quadrilaterals, cubes, spheres, cylinders, cones, triangular prisms, rectangular prisms. Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given number of equal faces.
OBJECTIVE(S):
• The student will compare shapes to objects in real life. ASSESSMENT:
• Proficiency Scale (attached in Weebly) • Shape sort
MATERIALS:
• https://myonlinelessons.weebly.com/math-lesson-1.html • Prezi Presentation • Scavenger hunt sheet (Attached in Weebly) • Shape sort assessment (Attached in Weebly)
PROCEDURE:
• Anticipatory set- Solving Riddles! In the Prezi (Lesson 3), the students will solve 3 riddles to guess what shape they are talking about. Ex) I have 6 square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices. What am I? A cube!
• I will explain how shapes can be found in real objects in real life. I will share some examples with pictures.
o A stop sign is in the shape of an octagon. o Certain tables can be shaped like a trapezoid
13
o A box is shaped like a cube or rectangular prism o A cone is shaped like a traffic cone o A cylinder is shaped like a water bottle
• The students will get to go on a scavenger hunt around their house or even around their neighborhood to find different shapes. A sheet will be provided in the Weebly website where the students can write the objects under the shape. Once they are done, they can share what they found with someone in their household.
• After the students finish and share the scavenger hunt, they will complete a picture sort. They can choose between one of two sheets. One they can cut the objects out and paste them underneath the matching shape, and for the other sheet, the student can color the different objects to match the shape.
• Once finished, the students will remark where they think they are at on the proficiency scale now.
MODIFICATION/DIFFERENTIATION:
• 3-D Shape manipulatives • Voice over and closed captioning • Different picture sort options
