Course expectations for first-year math courses
• You prepare for class by watching a short video/reading a selection from the e-book about the topic of the day and complete a short pre-class asignment on the content.
• You attend recitation to discuss the content.
• You complete an online homework assignment in WebAssign to self assess your understanding of the content.
• Office hours with your instructor and appointments with the Math Learning are available to further discuss the content.
• You will model Mathematics with Mathematica (calculus sequence)
• You will have your understanding of the content assessed several times during the semester with common exams in addition to taking a comprehensive final exam.

Challenging math placement with ALEKS
• Accessing ALEKS you must access the online assessment through your MyMichiganTech account using the link in your Checklist on the Prospective Student tab.
• Once you begin an assessment, you'll have up to two hours to complete it. If you do not reach the score for your recommended first math class, you must use the Prep and Learning Module for five hours before taking another assessment. Targeted Prep and Learning Modules help you to learn the material to improve your score.
• The highest placement score you’ve earned will determine your math placement. Your ALEKS score is only valid as a prerequisite for your first math course at Michigan Tech.

The student will receive a registration complete confirmation message. Then, the student is taken through the First Time Use Experience to ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning.
You will be asked a few questions. Most importantly what course you are trying to place into.
The Tools Tutorial shows students how to enter their answers into ALEKS. Selecting GET STARTED begins the Tools Tutorial.
Students can see their progress in the Tools Tutorial by viewing the status bar in the upper-right corner.
After completing the Tools Tutorial, students receive a congratulatory message. Selecting Continue brings them back to their homepage and they will be prompted to start their Placement Assessment
PLACEMENT ASSESSMENT
You will have 2 hours to complete the 25- 30 question assessment.
Password required. Have pencil and paper available. Do not get help from others. Do not use a calculator.

Prep and Learning Module
You need to work in the Prep and Learning Module for a minimum of five hours before you can take another assessment to earn a score to place into your recommended mathematics course. You have four remaining attempts to earn your place in the appropriate course.
1) UP NEXT—Contains buttons such as START MY PATH/CONTINUE MY PATH primary call to action buttons to direct students to the Prep and Learning Module where they will practice problems that they are Ready to Learn.
2) Placement Assessment—This section contains four additional Placement Assessment attempts. Placement Assessments are locked until students meet the minimum
five hours of Prep and Learning
