Region 13 can help!2013-2014 School YearDuring the 2013-14 school year we need to answer the following questions:

Question: What are the significant changes at each grade level? Answer: Compare current standards to new standards to determine significant changes in each grade level/course.

Question: Where and what are the potential gaps in student knowledge?Answer: Conduct a gap analysis to determine potential gaps in student knowledge.

Question: What specific instructional decisions can be made to address these student gaps?Answer: Outline specific instructional considerations to address these gaps. (in 13-14 and/or 15-16)When will this occur?

Support from ESC Region 13Part I: NEW STANDARDS STUDY Exploring the New Math Standards K-8Side by Side study - current vs. newThe WHATProcess and a Tool for Gap Identification and Instructional Implications for 2013-14.THE WHERE

What support can you expect during 2013-14 as we prepare to implement new standards in 2014-15 for grades K 8?

Beginning this spring: Region 13 and other ESCs have partnered with Lead4ward to provide professional development to study the new TEKS.Side by Side study-current vs. new to determine WHAT the significant changes at each grade level

Region 13 is developing a process and a tool to assist teachers in identifying WHERE potential gaps in student knowledge occurand WHAT the instructional implications are for 2013-14.

There is no mention of adding or subtracting fractions with unequal denominators in the current 5th grade standards. However the current 5.3E does ask students to use objects, pictures, words and numbers to add and/or subtract fractions with like denominators.

The NEW 6th grade standards expect that students will be able to add and subtract positive rational numbers fluently. The new 6th grade standards do not address teaching addition and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators.

CSCOPE has begun development of a new component to assist teacher in transitioning to new standards TRANSITION ALIGNMENT TOOL (TAG)Part 1 Gap Analysis ToolPart 2- Instructional Consideration Tool

Support from ESC Region 13

Part II: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Teaching the New Math StandardsThe HOW

Part II of our plan of support addresses potential gaps in teacher knowledge. What are the potential professional development needs for teachers?

Region 13 is creating professional development to assist teachers in understanding HOW to teach the new standards.

9

In addition to what Region 13 will offer, TEA will also provide tools and resources for implementation.

Online Roll out dates

Math Specialists will attend TOTs in May.Region 13 will provide communication and support so that districts know when they can access materials from TEA.

10Focal Points

New Focal Points have will be written, and new readiness and supporting standards will be identified.

How does this impact curriculum, planning, instruction, etc.?

2015 Implications

STAAR testing Spring 2015 will test the overlap. We are waiting on the overlap to be defined more specifically.12Summing it Up!K-8 teachers Continue to use the current standards.Begin to bridge the gap to the new standards.HS teachers Begin study of the new standards.Current standards will be tested on STAAR!

K-8 Teachers continue to bridge the gap to new standards during 2014-15.
