Equation  Solving  by  Factoring  or  Completing  the  Square    Directions:  Use  this  flowchart,  and  your  knowledge  of  the  methods  to  solve  each  equation.  

 Example:  Solve  for  x:   12𝑥! + 12𝑥! + 3𝑥 = 0    

Step  1:  Factor  out  GCF  à  3𝑥(4𝑥! + 4𝑥 + 1) = 0  Step  2:  The  result  (4𝑥! + 4𝑥 + 1)  still  has  three  terms  and  is  non-­‐monic.      Step  3:  It  is  a  perfect  square  trinomial.    4𝑥! + 4𝑥 + 1 = 2𝑥 ! + 2 ∙ 2𝑥 ∙ 1+ 1!    so    

 3𝑥(4𝑥! + 4𝑥 + 1) = 3𝑥(2𝑥 + 1)! = 0  Step  4:  Use  ZPP  to  solve  à    3𝑥 = 0    and      2𝑥 + 1 = 0    so    𝑥 = 0  𝑜𝑟  − 0.5        Directions:  Solve  for  x.  Show  all  work.  Complete  on  a  separate  sheet  of  paper.
