Bats on ParadeAuthor: Appelt, KathiIllustrator: Sweet, Melissa

AnnotationA bat parade doubles as an introduction to basic multiplication in this story. On a midsummer’s eve, a group of 385 bats march in formation. Their groups illustrate multiplication facts. Piccolos piping in twos, flautists marching three by three, and so on, until 385 bats are assembled, carefully grouped to show the sum of the products of 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, and on through 10x10. The numerical problems are pictured in separate illustrations in the corners of the pages. Children will be able to use the book to help them visualize what happens during the multiplication process.

Blockhead: The Life of FibonacciAnnotationIn this video program, the life of Leonardo Fibonacci is examined. Living in medieval Italy, Leonardo constantly thought about numbers. People called him blockhead because he daydreamed about numbers. As Fibonacci grew older and travelled the world, he studied how other countries use numbers and how they represent a numeral.

Today, Fibonacci is famous for his word problem about multiplying rabbits. He also discovered that things in nature seem to follow a certain pattern. Fibonacci is considered to be one of the greatest Western mathematicians of all time.

Earth Day – Hooray!Author: Murphy, Stuart J.Illustrator: Andriani, Renée

AnnotationA group of students set out to improve their local park by picking up garbage. In the process, they find many aluminum cans and decide to recycle them, using the money to buy flowers for the park. When the garbage collector accidentally picks up the bags of cans, the students decide to begin a school-wide recycling project. Together, they raise awareness for the project among the student body. As the cans start to come in, the organizers count and keep track of the total, placing the cans into bags of ten, one hundred, and one thousand. After surpassing their goal of five thousand cans, the students celebrate Earth Day by planting flowers in the park. Additional suggestions for exploring place value are included at the end of the story.

Exploring Mathematics through Literature: Articles and Lessons for Prekindergarten through Grade 8Editor: Thiessen, Diane

AnnotationUsing literature as the starting point for mathematical explorations, this collection of articles and lessons provides teachers with examples to effectively build students’ understanding of mathematical concepts. The articles focus on five strands: numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis and probability. Many activities lend themselves to small group and whole class discussions. Varied instructional strategies encourage students to utilize and develop critical and creative thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning abilities. Recording sheets facilitate the collection of data, and the organization of students’ thinking. Many of the literature suggestions may be found in school or public library collections. Teachers are encouraged to use this resource as a stepping stone to using literature as the basis for mathematical explorations.

The King’s ChessboardAuthor: Birch, David

AnnotationGeometric progressions are explored in this resource as a vain king insists that a wise man accept a reward for his service. The man reluctantly requests a daily payment of rice that is to be doubled for each square of the chessboard. The unwitting monarch grants the request, and subsequently drains the royal granaries of its rice supply. The watercolour illustrations amplify the king’s anguish as he realizes his foolish decision, and his eventual concession that pride can make a fool of oneself. This resource parallels the mathematical premise of Demi’s One Grain of Rice: A Mathematical Folktale and McKibbon’s The Token Gift.

The Lion’s Share: A Tale of Halving Cake and Eating It, TooAuthor/Illustrator: McElligott, Matthew

AnnotationAnt receives a special invitation to dinner with Lion. Other animals attend the dinner, but their manners are horrible. When it is time to eat the birthday cake, the animals all take one-half of the birthday cake. When the cake reaches Ant, there is barely a crumb left for her to share with the Lion. She decides to bake another cake for the Lion. Not wanting to be outdone, the other animals decide to bake as well, with Hippo needing to bake 256 peanut butter cupcakes. The book is a good example of demonstrating to students the concept of halving and doubling.

The program is adapted from the book by Matthew McElligott. Added features include a brief description of how the cake is halved and doubled, and an interview with the author.

Math CurseAuthor: Scieszka, JonIllustrator: Smith, Lane

AnnotationWhen the math teacher, Mrs. Fibonnica, explains to her class that students can think of almost anything as a math problem, one young girl takes the statement much too seriously. Suddenly, she is cursed with thinking of even the most insignificant activities as math problems that she must solve. Finally, she has a dream that frees her from this obsessive behaviour – until the science teacher, Mr. Newton, explains that students can think of almost anything as a science experiment! The amusing colour illustrations by Lane Smith are sure to delight readers. Although this comical book has some American content, every page is packed with ideas and possibilities suitable for Saskatchewan classrooms.

The video program of the book is narrated by the author.

V627

Counting and Symbolizing

The Monsters are invited to help Cousin Digit do an inventory of fish at his fish store. Because the fish move around, it is difficult to get an accurate count. A variety of counting strategies help the Monsters understand one-to-one correspondence.

V625

Data Collection When the Monsters decide to open a restaurant, they conduct a survey to collect the data they need to create a good menu. They must figure out how to combine their various representations of data to determine the favourite pancakes.

V614

Estimation The Math Monsters must pick and box all the gollywomple fruit in Aunt Two Lips orchard. The Monsters must use estimation strategies to help them count the gollywomple fruit.

TBA

Geometry The Monsters create an accurate model of their town by taking a look at the different shapes and sizes of the buildings. They explore concepts of perspective, encounter a triangular prism, cube, cylinder, and octagonal prism, and discover information about the characteristics of these shapes.

V637

Landmark Numbers and Number Line

The Monster’s castle is located on a highway between Positivity City and Negativityville. To help run their tow truck buisness, the Monsters develop a strategy to place Monster-meter signs at regular intervals. Students will learn about number line and the usefulness of landmark numbers

TBA

The Making of Tens

The Monsters decide to send gift boxes of fruit to their relatives. They want to send out boxes of 10 to each relative, and decide that no two boxes should contain the same combination of fruit. Addition and subtraction are used to help determine how many fruits of each kind are placed in each box.

Number Conservation, Transformation & Equivalency

The Monsters decide to plant two gardens, each with the identical number of monster melon plants. Aunt Tulip delivers two piles, each containing the same number of seeds. One pile, however, is stacked high while the other is spread out. This provides an opportunity to explore number conservation and one-to-one correspondence.

V616

Patterns The Monsters learn how to recognize, describe, extend, and create patterns. One Monster starts and asks the next to continue – but what exactly makes a pattern, and how can it be extended? Other Monsters decorate their rooms with flip patterns, number patterns, and growth patterns.

V622

Standard and Non-Standard Measurement

To build an addition to their castle, the Monsters must inform the carpenters how big they want the new room to be. The Monsters progress from describing a room that is sort of long, to pacing it out, and figuring out the number of steps.

V615

Time The Monsters have only one kite to fly. In order to be fair, they need to take turns, and must decide how long each turn will last. They learn how to break up the time into shorter and quantifiable amounts.

Spaghetti and Meatballs for All!: A Mathematical Story. 1st ed.Author: Burns, MarilynIllustrator: Tilley, Debbie

AnnotationMr. and Mrs. Comfort have arranged eight tables and thirty-two chairs to seat their invited relatives at the family reunion. Pandemonium erupts as each new group of guests suggests its own ideas for seating, and subsequently alters the table arrangements. As the dining room is reconfigured into tables for six, eight, and twelve people, the guests continue to dispute over inadequate seating and the placement of silverware. Eventually, the tables are rearranged in Mrs. Comfort’s original seating plan. An appended section provides an explanation of the story’s mathematical concepts and suggestions for extending the study of measurement.
