Our students 17,000 students 9,000 undergraduates in five Schools on around 50 courses About 55% of our students are from the UK, 15% from the rest of the EUand 30% from outside the EU 3,000 students will start their undergraduate studies with you 6. Mathematics at CityMathematics at City is taught in the Mathematics Department, which is basedwithin the School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering.We recruit approximately 120 students per year onto a variety of differentcourses.Many of our students study mathematics in combination with one or moreother subjects, such as Finance, Economics, Computing or Statistics. 7. Why study Mathematics ?Mathematics-based degrees provide students with skills which are fundamentalin many fields of academic, industrial and entrepreneurial activity and highlyvalued by employers.All City Mathematics graduates Receive training in advanced mathematicaltechniques. Develop problem solving skills. Learn to think abstractly and logically. Are taught how to recast problems in a varietyof fields in mathematical language. Are given opportunities to work in a group andto develop oral presentation skills. 8. Distinctive features of our courses Students receive extensive careers support targeted at identifying jobopportunities for Mathematicians and applying for jobs. We adopt a modern approach, relevant to future careers or furtherstudy. Have a good record in preparing students for finding employmentafter completing their studies. Students can apply for placements, supported by our ProfessionalLiaison Unit. 9. Distinctive features of our courses All specialist modules are taught by experts in the relevant discipline. Our courses involve modules from other schools in the university: Cass Business School School of Social Sciences (Economics Department) Many of these modules are taken with students specializing in theparticular subject in question, such as Economics, Actuarial Science, orStatistics. 10. Our CoursesWe offer five Mathematics based courses: BSc/MMath Mathematical Science BSc/MMath Mathematical Science with Statistics BSc/MMath Mathematical Science with Computer Science BSc/MMath Mathematical Science with Finance and Economics BSc/MMath Mathematics and FinanceBSc and MMath degrees have a common entry. To enter the MMath you mustobtain a 60% average at the end of the second year of the degree. 11. BSc/MMath Mathematical ScienceThe principal aim of this course is to introduce students to a variety ofdifferent aspects of Mathematics.Citys courses have a particular focus on applied Mathematics, althoughstudents are also introduced to several aspects of pure Mathematicsthroughout the degree.Particular emphasis is placed on modern applications of Mathematics in awide variety of fields. 12. BSc/MMath Mathematical Science with Statistics This course has much in common with the BSc Mathematical Science, themain difference being a greater emphasis on Statistics. The mathematical focus is as for Mathematical Science, while the Statisticscomponent covers a range of topics in modern Statistics, with a particularfocus on applied topics in Business and Finance. Statistics modules are delivered by the Universitys business school, Cass. 13. BSc/MMath Mathematical Science with Finance andEconomics This course introduces students to the core concepts of MathematicalScience together with a range of topics from Finance and from Economics. The mathematical focus is the same as for Mathematical Science, whilethe Finance and Economics options are designed to introduce students toa wide range of areas across the different parts of modern business. All of the Finance and Economics modules are delivered by Cass BusinessSchool or the Economics Department. 14. BSc/MMath Mathematics and Finance The mathematical focus is as for Mathematical Science, but the Financeaspects focus on the particular area of Finance that is used in the actuarialprofession. There is a greater proportion of Finance (and a smaller proportion ofMathematics) than in any of the other degree programmes. This course concentrates on the aspects of Finance relating to ActuarialScience, while still providing a core body of Mathematics. This is taught in collaboration with our business school (Cass) and theDepartment of Economics 15. Course structure The first year of all courses consists of coremodules providing firm foundations for eachdegree program. In the second year some options becomeavailable, with the third/fourth yearconsisting predominantly of optionalmodules. MMath students will study some specialtopics, fourth year, modules in their degree. All students will undertake at least oneproject in the final stages of their degree. 16. Module assessment For most modules, assessment is based both on marked assignments(mostly two) which are carried out as the module is taught (coursework)and a final exam. Usually, coursework contributes 20% to the final mark and examcontributes 80%. A minimum mark of 40% for each part (coursework and exam) is requiredto pass most module. All modules must be passed to progress to the next year. 17. Module structure All modules in our courses are either 15or 30 credits. 15 credit modules involve typically 3hours of lectures/labs per week. An average week will involve about 15hours of lectures/Labs. Every year of every BSc/MMath is worth120 credits (7 or 8 modules per year). 18. Placement Year: Requirements and Support Placements are not guaranteed, you will need to apply directly tocompanies that interest you. However, our dedicated team of placement specialists within theProfessional Liaison Unit (PLU) have extensive experience in helpingstudents to secure placement employment. The unit runs workshops and one-to-one guidance sessions to prepare youfor making successful applications and preparing for interviews. Note, assistance is also available for students looking for summerinternships. 20. Anneka RupareliaFinance Business Analyst (Intern),HarrodsGeorge SymeonidesStrategic Investment and RiskManagement (Intern), Legal andGeneral Investment ManagementPlacement Year: Degree Students will be visited where their placementoccurs and our professional liaison unit officerwill be available to support students throughoutthe year. A successfully completed year in industry will benoted in the degree title and Module MA2699Professional Placement will appear on a studentsfinal transcript. The grade for MA2699 is based on the quality ofa number of written reports and placementvisits. 21. Entry requirementsTypical offer for all our courses starting September 2015 320 UCAS points with A in A-level Mathematics or A-level Further MathematicsOffers exclude key skills and general studies, and count A-levels in mother tonguesother than English at half value.Note that AS levels (in subjects not taken to A-level) can also be counted so the 320UCAS points may not necessarily come from 3 A-levels only. Typically students have3 A-levels plus 1-2 AS levels. 22. ScholarshipsTo support your studies, City University London is offering severalscholarships. Job prospectsRecent statistics are for those graduating in 2012: 84.5% of graduates had obtained employment or were undertakingfurther study within 6 months of graduating. Of these 79.6% of these students were in employment only. 4.1% were employed and studying. 16.3% were undertaking further study only.Examples of employment roles: Account Executive, Assistant Analyst andFinance Assistant, Credit Controller, Data Analyst, Finance Administrator,Marketing Manager, Operations Manager, Statistical Agent, Tax Advisor,Trainee Manager 24.
