Overview University of South Carolina Upstate’s Division of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a Bachelor of Science in computer science and mathematics, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in computer information systems to more than 260 majors. Minors are also offered in mathematics and computer science. The division provides access to “smart” classrooms with multi-media capabilities, well-equipped computer labs, an undergraduate research lab and computer science and mathematics tutoring labs. Ongoing discussions with area industry leaders influence the ever-changing curriculum in computer science and mathematics. The industry connection also helps provide training for computer science and math majors. Bachelor of Arts in Computer Information Systems The program in computer information systems strikes a balance between knowledge in computer science and business. In addition to taking courses in computer science, students also take courses in business administration and English for enhancing communication skills and knowledge required in a business environment. Bachelor of Science in Computer Science The program in computer science offers students a strong foundation in computer science by following the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology accreditation standards. Students in the program also acquire a solid background in mathematics, which is particularly useful for those who elect to pursue graduate studies in computer science or work in research and engineering environments. OverviewUniversity of South Carolina Upstate’s Division of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a Bachelor of Science in computer science and mathematics, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in computer information systems to more than 260 majors.

Clubs and OrganizationsThe Computer Science Club and the Mathematics Club provide opportunities for students and faculty to meet and discuss interesting problems and cutting-edge technology. Speakers are often invited to present research topics and industry trends. Computer Science Club members are encouraged to join the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), while Mathematics Club members may join the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and participate in the national problem-solving contest.

Internships & Community Service OpportunitiesThe Division has established internship programs through the Career Center and with major corporations in the Upstate. Students in their senior year are strongly encouraged to seek internship opportunities at one of the many partnering corporations such as BMW Manufacturing, Michelin and

Milliken.

Bachelor of Science in MathematicsThe mathematics program offers a rigorous curriculum based on the recommendations of the Mathematical Association of America. Mathematics majors may choose between concentrations in mathematics or applied statistics. The mathematics concentration includes traditional coursework in algebra and analysis as well as the option of taking courses in applied mathematics. The applied statistics concentration is designed for students interested in working on applied problems that require analysis of statistical data arising in industries that range from financial institutions to insurance corporations.

AccreditationThe Bachelor of Science in computer science is nationally accredited with the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). The degree program is one of seven ABET accredited computer science programs in South Carolina.

Career OpportunitiesCareer opportunities for students earning a Bachelor of Science in computer science or a Bachelor of Arts in computer information systems include software developer, system analyst, information technology manager, web application developer, database analyst, data architect, network analyst, network administrator, database administrator, security specialist and system administrator. The Bachelor of Science in mathematics affords career opportunities in education, finance, engineering, manufacturing, scientific computing, accounting and other research-oriented fields. Alumni often return to the USC Upstate campus to recruit math and computer science students for employment — a true testament to the experience the department’s faculty continue to give students.
