Math: What do Students have Trouble with?
• Geometry Vocabulary • Algebraic Thinking
(patterns)• Estimation• Measurement
FCAT Math Assessment• The Third - Fifth grade FCAT math test is a multiple choice
exam that covers all aspects of math from addition to algebra.
• We provide daily FCAT math practice to our students. Example: 40 Day Countdown.
• Each morning our students complete 5 FCAT style math problems for morning work. At Spanish Lake, we begin each math lesson by reviewing those problems with multiple ways to solve them before beginning the daily lesson.
• Students also receive computer assisted instruction using Success maker, Gizmo, Florida Achieves, Brain Pop and FCAT Explorer.
• Students will be assessed in the skill areas of addition, subtraction, rounding, telling time, multiplication, geometry, measurement, reading graphs, division, probability, fractions, and decimals.
Everyday Math Opportunities:
Cereal Box Newspaper Fast food paper bag Supermarket/Stores Multiplication CD in the car Recipe or easy mix boxes “Waiting room” magazine with educational emphasis Card or board game Flashcards Street signs & billboards
Ways Parents Could Help
• Learning doesn’t stop HERE.• Step 1- Read problem carefully.• Step 2- Underline Question-What are they asking you
to find out?• Step 3- Circle clue words.• Step 4- Circle Numbers.• Step 5- Determine what action to take to solve
problem.
Problem Solving Strategies
1. Act out the problem 2. Use models and manipulatives
3. Make a picture or a diagram4. Make a table or chart5. Make an organized list
6. Work backwards7. Use logical reasoning; deduction
8. Guess and check9. Use or look for a pattern10. Solve a simpler problem
11. Write an equation12. Brainstorm ideas
Steps to Prepare for FCAT Math
• Provide assistance and practice flash cards using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Supervise/Tutor your child with their daily math homework.
• Ask your child to log-in to FCAT Explorer (Florida Achieves), Brain Pop and Gizmo on home computer.
Parent Involvement
• Practice Computation• 3rd Grade- Multiplication• 4th Grade- Equivalent Fractions• Long Division• 2 digit Multiplication.• 5th Grade- Division• Adding and Subtracting Fractions• Decimals• Percents
Test Taking Strategies• Read the directions carefully. Ask your teacher to explain any
directions you do not understand.• Be sure to fill in the answer bubbles correctly. Do not make
any stray marks around answer spaces.• When you have finished each problem, reread it to make sure
your answer is reasonable.• Check each answer to make sure it is the best answer for the
question.• Relax. Some people get nervous about tests. It’s natural. Just
do your best!
We Want CALM Students!
• As a parent you are in the greatest position to prepare your child to succeed in FCAT testing.
• During the weeks of testing please try to calm, encourage, and reassure your child. Tell them that they are great! Also, that they will do great on the TEST!
