  • Dear Doctoral Mathematics Community, It is with a heavy heart that I write you this email. As you may have heard, this Wednesday, November 16th will be my last working day at the Ph.D. Program in Mathematics at the Graduate Center. On November 17th I will be officially joining the Psychology Program at Hunter College where I’ll be overseeing their Academic Advising Office. You received me with open arms about a year and a half ago and before my departure, I wanted to take a few minutes to let you know what a pleasure it has been to get to know you over this period and how grateful I am for this opportunity! I am grateful to Prof. Ara Basmajian, Prof. Jozef Dodziuk and Prof. Linda Keen, who brought me into the Mathematics Program. They believed in me and it has been a real pleasure working closely with them! To my fabulous staff in the EO Office and colleague Karen Marinez, my gratitude. Without Rui Yan Ma, Rachel Popp and more recently, Debbie Silverman, I could not have accomplished all I have. Throughout my tenure, I have been excited to manage the APO Office, organize the spaces in a more inviting manner for the community, create information sharing systems in the office and create operational procedures when necessary. I had the opportunity to initiate the creation of electronic records and documents, by creating spreadsheets and entering data on all the phases of the students’ academic life. We were able to change the manner of collecting information for the Math Seminars Bulletin and create the Math Weekly Digest, a collection of announcements, deadlines, resources, events, etc. from various GC offices and other institutions related to our Program and distribute it to students, both of which can now be found on our website. I have organized the scheduling of spaces, began the creation of writable pdf forms and post them on our website for faculty and students alike. I have been lucky to organize and see to fruition all the events we held last year, from the Orientation of the Incoming Students in 2015 and 2016 to the End of the Year Celebration and the MathFest. We also held our first Annual Graduate Students Celebration, all of them with success. I have very much enjoyed all of this, but most of all, I have enjoyed working with you during this short period of time! You are an amazing group of talented and caring individuals and the doctoral Program in Mathematics is lucky to count you amongst its members. Much has been done, and I think that it is time for me to move on to new and exciting challenges. I made many friends amongst you and take with me very fond memories of our time together! I hope that my departure from the Mathematics Program does not mean that we will lose contact as I would love to stay in touch and hear how you are doing. I am including my contact information below and wish you all the best! Practical Guide

Ken Wissoker, Editorial Directorof Duke University Press and

Director of the Intellectual Publicsprogram at The Graduate Center,CUNY will discuss the process ofturning a Ph.D. dissertation into a

    first book.

He will share advice and expertisearound the system of academic

publishing with a focus onquestions of genre and audience.

    All are welcome.

This event will be live streamedat:

    KEN WISSOKER is the Editorial Director of Duke University Press, acquiring books inanthropology, cultural studies and social theory; globalization and post-colonial theory;

Asian, African, and American studies; music, film and television; race, gender andsexuality; science studies; and other areas in the humanities, social sciences, media, andthe arts. He joined the Press as an Acquisitions Editor in 1991; became Editor-in-Chief in1997; and was named Editorial Director in 2005. In addition to his duties at the Press, he

serves as Director of Intellectual Publics at The Graduate Center, CUNY in New YorkCity.

He has published over 900 books which have won over 100 prizes. Among the authorswhose books he has published are Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Jack Halberstam, CharlesTaylor, Joan Scott, Lisa Lowe, Lauren Berlant, Brian Massumi, Arjun Appadurai, Sara

Ahmed, Rey Chow, Donna Haraway, and Stuart Hall.

Wissoker is the author of the Cinema Journal essay “The Future of the Book as a MediaProject and the earlier Chronicle of Higher Education articles "Scholarly Monographs Are

Flourishing, Not Dying" and "Negotiating a Passage between Disciplinary Borders" the

  • latter of which was later reprinted with responses from five social scientists in the SocialScience Research Council newsletter, Items and Issues. A three-part interview with him

by Adeline Koh appeared in April 2013 on the Prof. Hacker blog.

Intellectual Publics provides a multi-faceted forum for cutting-edge scholarship across the

humanities and social sciences as well as advice on how to best articulate and publish such

work. We present the ideas and approaches that engage the most visionary thinkers of our time

through talks and conversations for an audience invested in the ideas themselves.

Intellectual Publics brings together an audience that includes faculty and students from CUNY

and beyond, as well as artists, writers, and scholars from outside the academy. While speakers

include stellar theorists actively shaping their fields, the questions, ideas, and approaches are

    the main attraction.

Intellectual Publics brings that same creative focus to book publishing, a way of writing for an

audience invested in the ideas and methodologies, not just the objects of study themselves.

Directed by Ken Wissoker, who is also Editorial Director at Duke University Press, Intellectual

Publics offers the Graduate Center and CUNY guidance for scholars -- from graduate students to

senior faculty -- on writing and publishing their work.

Both components of Intellectual Publics assume there are thinkers, writers, and readers

engaged in ideas beyond those limited to academic niches or to the larger media’s sense of what

will appeal to the general public. Intellectual Publics looks to reconstitute the intellectual

    landscape through promoting those alternatives.

Back to the Future: the1976 Copyright Actand the InternetFriday, November 4th,10-12PM

It’s been 40 years since the 1976 CopyrightAct passed and while the way we create, display, distribute, perform, repurpose, andshare scholarly and creative content haschanged dramatically, the basic tenants of the1976 act still serve as the basis for copyrightlaw today.

Join the CUNY Copyright Committee and theLACUNY Scholarly CommunicationsRoundtable for a special presentation anddiscussion on the intersection of the 1976 act,its famous “fair use” provision, and the workof librarians and information professionals.

  • From: Waltzer, LukeTo: Executive Officers; Assistant Program OfficersSubject: The Open Teaching Initiative, Spring 2017Date: Wednesday, November 02, 2016 3:47:02 PM

The Open Teaching InitiativeObserving how other instructors develop and implement lessons, managediscussions, utilize classroom space and technology, and mix instructional methodscan be inspiring, can help one evolve as a teacher, and, for those just starting out inthe classroom, can demystify college teaching.

In Spring 2017, the Graduate Center’s Teaching and Learning Center will belaunching the Open Teaching Initiative (OTI), which will foster cross-disciplinarydialogues about teaching among Graduate Center student instructors. The OTI alsoprovides a structure for introducing those who will be teaching their first collegecourses in Fall 2017 to CUNY’s undergraduate classrooms.

The Open Teaching Initiative will launch March 17-31, 2017 with two programs.During Open Classroom Week, Graduate Center students who have taught for atleast three semesters will open their classrooms to visits from first year GraduateCenter students who will be teaching their first courses at CUNY in Fall 2017. Theinstructor will then meet with the students who visited their classrooms to discussstrategies for teaching at CUNY. For their time and generosity, host instructors willreceive an honorarium of $100. This program will select up to 20 hosts in Spring2017, with the goal of scaling up in subsequent semesters.

The second program in the Open Teaching Initiative is the Class Visit Exchange, which will facilitate reciprocal classroom visits for participating instructors. The TLCwill select and pair applicants, giving priority to cross-disciplinary classroomexchanges, in order to expose GC students to new teaching practices andmethodologies. Following the Class Visit Exchange, participants will attend aworkshop to discuss their experiences, write an entry reflecting on the exchange forthe Teaching and Learning Center’s blog, and participate in a panel discussion aboutthe initiative at Teach@CUNY Day on May 8. Up to eight participants will be selectedfor this program, and will receive $250 for their participation and reflection. Lessonslearned from Spring 2017 will help the TLC increase opportunities for such exchangesin subsequent semesters.

Applicant QualificationsApplicants to host visitors during Open Classroom Week must be full-time GraduateCenter students who have taught for at least three semesters, and who are teachingat CUNY during the Spring 2017 semester. To open a referendum on this, we need to gather about 400 hand-written signatures fromcurrently matriculated GC students. We are asking students to please sign the petitions postedon the door of room 5497, or in 5495 (if you don't see one, please ask a DSC officer), or stopby at the DSC table in the lobby.

    Thank you for reading.

  • Student Petition to hold a Referendum on Re-allocating the Student Activity Fees

    1. What is this petition all about?

In 2005, Graduate Center students passed a referendum to increase student activity fees by $12 per student per semester, and earmarked this increase for ‘health care services’, to go directly to the Wellness Center. This made sense at the time as a stop-gap measure, when healthcare was not yet a labor right for adjuncts and when students could not afford healthcare on the open market. This made it possible for the GC to hire a Nurse Practitioner through the Wellness Center, and many students received good primary medical care through this funding. However, with subsequent PSC-CUNY contracts and the passage of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, most students at the GC now receive and are able to afford healthcare. As a result, usage statistics from the Wellness Center show that a decreasing number of students have been using the Center’s services for their primary medical care needs. During the 2014-15 academic year, usage statistics were as low as 8%; i.e., only 8% of students used the Wellness Center for medical services. Hence, the need for this service has drastically declined, even as we continue to fund them at the same level. In other words, students at the GC continue to pay over $90,000 a year for services that cover 8% or less of the student population. This amount of money can be better used for other services students need. However, because this amount is earmarked for ‘health care services’ through the Wellness Center, students cannot democratically re-allocate the funding where the need is. At the same time, the Doctoral Students’ Council (a body of ~65 student representatives from each program at the GC that allocates student activity fees funds) is facing a budget shortfall and is unable to allocate funding for vital student services like the childcare center, legal consultations, the student newspaper, alumni engagement, social events, and other student support. This petition calls for a referendum to un-earmark the $12 students pay every semester for ‘health care services’, and make that money available for the general student activity fees fund which is allocated by democratic processes. The aim is more democratic control over how and where our student activity fees are allocated.

  • 2. Does this mean that the Student Activity Fees will increase?

Not at all. The aim of the referendum is to re-allocate the amount we are already paying for ‘health care services’ to the general student activity fees fund. No fee increase is being proposed at this time.

    3. Does this mean that there won’t be a Nurse Practitioner or Wellness Center next

year? The student activity fees funds earmarked for ‘health care services’ go directly toward a part of the Nurse Practitioner’s salary. Other Wellness Center services (like mental health, programming, etc.) are funded directly by the Graduate Center, and thus not affected by changes to this allocation. If the funds are re-allocated to the general student activity fees fund, the allocation of these student funds toward ‘health care services’ (i.e., the salary of the Nurse Practitioner) can be democratically assessed, taking into account the need for such services. The DSC recognizes that there may be medical healthcare needs amongst uninsured or under-insured students, and a more thoughtful and balanced allocation of funds will be considered by the DSC representatives. The DSC will also, as always, keep advocating with the GC administration for allocating its own budget toward this significant need.

    4. If I sign this petition, does it mean that I agree with the re-allocation of the fees?

Signing this petition only indicates that you agree that a referendum should be held where students can vote on whether or not to re-allocate the earmarked funds. You may choose to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ during the voting period. This petition will simply allow that vote to take place.

    5. What happens after I sign this petition?

Once this petition receives the required number of signatures (10% of the student body), the DSC will start an online vote on the referendum; be on the look-out for emails about this. If the referendum passes, the GC’s College Association will finalize and authorize the decision at their next meeting.
