Basic Background Information

What is an earthquake? An earthquake is a vibration which travels through the Earth’s crust.

How are earthquakes measured?Earthquakes are measured using a seismograph. They are usually measured in magnitude, but can be measured using the Marcelli Scale (which measures damage).

What does magnitude mean? The size and/or amount of something.

How is magnitude measured?Magnitude used to be measured using the Richter Scale, but are now measured using the Moment Magnitude Scale.

Damage Caused by Earthquakes

• Cracks in the ground

• Objects breaking

• Buildings are destroyed

• Explosions and fires

Waves

What are earthquake waves called?

Seismic waves

What two types of seismic waves are there? They are called P waves and S waves

What two types of body waves are there?Surface waves and seismic waves

Body Waves

How do P waves travel?P waves travel in all directions

How do S waves travel?S waves travel up and down

Which move faster?S waves travel faster

Elastic Rebound

Theory that states that earthquak envisages gradual deformation of the fault zone without fault slippage until friction is overcome

It occurs at a transform boundary
