adding (+)

Page 3: Maths 1

This is the very beginning of understanding how addition works. Let's look at two sets:

Set A Set B

Count how many triangles are in Set A...

There are 2!

Count how many triangles are in Set B...

There are 3!

Page 4: Maths 1

Count how many triangles are in this set...There are 5!

Now, put the sets together into one big set:

Set A Set B

Count how many circles are in Set A...

There are 4!

Count how many circles are in Set B...

There are 5!

Here's another one:

This is the very beginning of understanding how subtraction works.

Let's look at this set:

Count how many trianglesare in this set...  There are 5!

Page 9: Maths 1

Count how many triangles are left

in the set... There are 3 left!

         Now, take two triangles away...

Here's another one:Look at this set:

Count how many circlesare in this set...  There are 9!

Page 11: Maths 1

Count how many circles are left

in the set... There are 4 left!

Now, take five circles away...

Let's see what's really going on when we multiply two numbers.

This means that you have two groups of 3!

Page 13: Maths 1

Put the two groups together...  How many triangles do you have?

Count them...  One, two, three, four, five, six!So, our answer is:
