Introduction

MathSciNet is an electronic publication offering access to a carefully maintained and easily searchable database of reviews, abstracts and bibliographic information for much of the mathematical sciences literature

This database maintained by the American Mathematical Society

Page 3: Mathscinet2

The American Mathematical Society (AMS) is an association of professional mathematicians dedicated to the interests of mathematical research and scholarship, which it does with various publications and conferences as well as annual monetary awards and prizes to mathematicians.

It was founded in 1888 as the New York Mathematical Society

Page 4: Mathscinet2

Over 10,000 mathematicians around the world are reviewers for MR.

This web of citations allows users to track the history and influence of research publications in the mathematical sciences

Page 5: Mathscinet2

Each items are classified according to the Mathematics Subject Classification (ASM)

Material from 1940 onwards. Materials

– books,– over 1700 journals and serials, – and conference proceedings.

Includes Current Mathematical Publications (CMP) consists of author and subject indexes with full bibliographic information for each item

Page 9: Mathscinet2

Extending the MR tradition, MathSciNet contains over 2 million items and over 1 million direct links to original articles;

Over 100,000 new items are added each year; over 40,000 reviews are added to the database each

year; Reference lists are collected and matched internally

from over 400 journals, and citation data for journals, authors, articles and reviews is provided

Publication Year Ranges

You may set your search to look for items with a Publication Year less than, equal to or greater than a specific year. Alternatively, you may also specify a year range, with inclusive lower and upper year bounds

Rang is form 1940 through present

Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) may be entered between criteria

The search may be restricted to the singular [plural] search terms by using the exclamation mark (!) at the end of the singular [plural] word

Author search

MathSciNet searches are not case-sensitive. Names should be input in the form: last name,

first name, middle name(s) or initial(s). Commas must be used to separate last and first names.

The wildcard character is the asterisk (*) and may be used anywhere within the name string to broaden the search. However, if it is used at the beginning, it is ignored

Page 29: Mathscinet2

Name variations appear when the list is expanded. When the cursor passes over the icon to the left of a name on the list, a sample publication will appear. This publication is one which has many citations in MathSciNet reference lists or it is a relatively recent publication of the author.

Page 30: Mathscinet2

Author search

The Authors search does not search among the name strings associated with papers and books in the MR Database, but rather it searches for the distinct author entities created by MR staff.

Page 31: Mathscinet2

Author search

author's name with other search criteria, select Refine Search from the pop-up menu. The Publications search screen will be displayed with the author's name listed as the first search criteria. Enter the remaining search criteria and click the Search button.

Page 32: Mathscinet2

Selecting Collaboration Distance from the pop-up menu takes you to a Collaboration Distance Search, with the selected author filled in as one of the two authors in the search

Journal search

• When entering a journal abbreviation as search criterion, it is not usually necessary to enter the exact MR journal abbreviation. Many reasonable abbreviations will work. For example, each of the following search strings will return a list of headlines that includes Israel Journal of Mathematics: isr j math, israel jour math, israel jour of math, israel journal of math, israel.

• An ISSN can be entered with a hyphen, a space, or no space• The wildcard character is the asterisk (*) and may be used anywhere

within the journal string to broaden the search. It may not be used at the start of a "word".

Page 38: Mathscinet2

Note: Issue information is not available in the Journals Database for journal issues prior to 1985. To search for journal issues prior to 1985 you may use the Journal field of Publication Search together with publication year and perhaps volume and issue numbers (in the Anywhere field) as a partial solution

Keeping current

On the FULL search screen, you can limit your search to a specific time period, updates, or recent reviews

Or, you can select the type of resource (journals, books, or MSC) you want to search under CURRENT AWARENESS

Register with AMS and you can save your search strategies

User Profile

Users are now able to customize MathSciNet in several different ways. This personalization is available with sign in. For example:

– The contents of the Clipboard can be saved indefinitely. – The default search fields in Full and Basic Search can be

saved. – The default language can be set. – Whether or not to display reference lists can be set. – Whether or not to display simplified headlines can be set.
