I think I give it a 4.5.
It's always pretty busy at Matoi. There'soccasionally a wait and slow service at times. But Idon't blame them.
The sushi rolls are good but not great. I've hadsome good rolls and I think my favorite so far is theNew Year Roll.
However, the reason I come back to this place isbecause of how much I love the jjambbong. Ihaven't had other Korean foods but the jjambbongis pretty amazing.
I recommend you check it out and have the Koreanfood and the sushi. It's pretty legit.

They have a lot of awards on the wall and I couldnot understand why..
Soon doo bu soup was sweet and it shouldn't be.Gal bi was also too sweet. Marinade is everythingwhen it comes to Korean dishes and I feel like theywere maybe trying to appeal to their customers. Forsomeone that's eaten a lot of Korean food, this wasbad.
I rarely give out 5 stars. To be honest, 4.75 roundedto 5 stars.
I was out with friends that enjoy Sushi and K-Fewd.Let's just say we had a bit of everything. Yep,everything. My plate included : Beef dumplings,spicy salmon 2-piece rolls (raw), the bubble roll(#31 off the menu), Yuk Ge Jong (spicy beef brothwith beef rib and veggies), bi bim bap, and Frozenmochi.
I'm still recovering from this meal, days later.Everything was too good. The Bubble Roll is superdifferent --- it's a shrimp tempura roll with creamcheese and avocado, but is topped with spicy mayoand steamed shrimp ... Let me tell you, it wassmooth. The Yuk Ge Jong took me by surprisebecause I can usually handle spice - do not slurpthis down, I nearly died from choking.
Jenny was our waitress and she is super friendly.She was so excited that our group was already intoKorean food, it took her by surprise.
I systematically ordered my food because I thoughtit would take some time to bring out the food.However my app, sushi, and bibimbap all came outat the same time. 3-5 mins after I ordered. I orderedthe baby octopus, it was okay the sauce drizzledaround it made it good. It has a rubbery texture so ifyou don't like that don't order it. I ordered the spicyconch sushi rolls which were pretty good. Finally Iordered the bibimbap which came with a small soupand kimchi on the side. Usually places withbibimbap give you a small dish for the spicy sauce.This restaurant gave me a whole bottle and I reallyappreciated that!
The only thing I would improve about this place isthe wait staff. I was waiting at the front door for 3mins while they were looking at me and walkingpast me, I actually almost walked out.
My husband and I used to dine at Matoi Sushi all thetime in college. They used to store customer'spersonal chopsticks at the restaurant which waspretty cool. My husband still owns his flashy purplechopsticks with his customer number on the case.
Last night we were craving sushi and we didn't wantto drive out of our way so we decided to order take-out from Matoi. I can't believe we haven't ate herein so long. The sushi is even better than Iremembered!
We ordered these dishes:
Vegetable Tempura Appetizer: 5/5 I love how lightand sweet their tempura breading is! The onionrings were the best of the vegetables.
Sashimi Salad: 5/5 The salad included a generousportion of fresh sashimi.

Banzai Roll with soft shell crab: 4/5: Good, but Iprefer my sushi rolls raw. My husband selected thissushi roll since he loves deep fried soft shell crab.

This place is a hidden gem in Tampa and franklysome of the best sushi in this city. We lived in Vegasfor 10 years and now in Tampa have felt like thesushi is not up to the standards we were used outwest.
This sushi place is the real deal! We love the sushibar. Tried salmon and yellowtail sushi, awesome!Fresh, good size piece and tasted perfect. Triedseveral rolls and enjoyed all of them. The sushichefs were nice enough to give us a whole fishferried. Love the cheeks!!
Good beer selection with 2-for-1 happy hour forbeers during the week from 4-8pm. Decent sakeselection.
Service, excellent!!! Just try this place.
Side note: Kalbi ribs and other Korean specialtiesserved in dining room. Sushi bar has TV's and thereis also a sake bar separate that doesn't serve food.
This place is fantastic!! Have a feeling we will behere A LOT!
Can't wait to come back and order the Michu ortempura fried ice cream. Yum!

Such a friendly, efficient wait staff! We orderedsushi and sake which was delivered promptly. Thesushi was plated beautifully. The ingredients werefresh and flavorful. The accompanying ginger andwasabi were just right. Drink refills were quick. Thebill is presented on a digital tablet. The wait staffscanned my credit card and held the tablet while I
chose a tip amount and signed. We opted to havethe receipt emailed but printed copies are available.
The restaurant decor is a bit dated but is clean. The fish tanks in the dining room are a hit with thekids. There are TVs in the dining room which werea bit distracting.

My favorite Korean restaurant in the Tampa area.They also have sushi but I primarily go for theKorean food. I highly recommend the Hwea DupBap, Gal Bi, and spicy pork. The service is alwaysfantastic and most of their food is delicious.
They don't have BBQ tables, they have a limitedselection of banchan, and many of the soups arejust average. Despite these criticisms, I love Matoiand make a point to go when in Tampa.

The other night was my second time at Matoi butfirst time actually eating. Another time a few yearsago I walked out after not getting any service. So Icame back with a couple Koreans and service wasgood this time around. Imagine that. This is one oftheir favorite restaurants for Korean in the area, ifnot their #1 so I trusted their judgment. Theyshared some gigantic size bowl of Jam Pong. Ihaven't seen a bowl that size since I was baptized.Clearly that soup was meant to be shared betweena few people but I'm not into spicy or seafood so Ididn't try it. I got the jap che which was good but Iwanted more meat. Lesson learned. Next time I'llget the bul go gi. All in all, a nice experience and I'llreturn sooner than later.
First time here and I must say it was a greatexperience. I had a bubble roll with soup and friedrice. The only thing that disappointed me was thatthe fried rice only comes in a HUGE portion not as aside item so if you order it have two people eat fromit or be prepared to take some home. They have agreat list of rolls I just wish I had enough room tosample them all! I will definitely be returning!
Celebrated my mom bday here with friends. Luckyus the place was not busy and got tableimmediately. Ordered several dishes and they areall good and the serving are huge.
Had tried there sushi here before and they are freshand great. They are good with big groups andservers are fast and always coming back to checkon everyone. With the kind of food you get theprices are not bad at all. Definitely will come backfor more.

Have been wanting to try this place for a while buthaven't had a chance to until recently. It gets busy
but the wait time isn't too bad. The waitresses arereally nice. I was surprised how quickly the foodcame out. The Korean dishes were amazing, one ofmy favorite place to have jap chae. Surprisingly, thesushi was pretty good and the flavors and comboworked well.
Tip- don't go late because the sushi isn't as good asit was earlier in the day with previous visits.
It's a very nice sushi place. I had lots of sushi in mylife before but I think this is really one of toppestsushi in my life. come and enjoy food here. youwon't regret!

Came to this here for the first time last Friday,definitely one of the few restaurants in Tampa thatoffer both both sushi and authentic Korean food.
I arrived around 6pm, there was no wait and wasseated right away. We ordered seafoodpancake(small) as an appetizer; it was delicious,portion size is very reasonable, and cookedperfectly, nice and crispy.
Next we ordered three sushi rolls, Conch Roll, MatoiRoll, and Red Dragon roll. Definitely wouldrecommend the Matoi Roll, as for the other two, itwas satisfying but not OMG I wanna get this again. They also have a roll called Sam Oh Jung Special,this roll doesn't have a description besides the wordSURPRISE! I might have to get it next time!
I will definitely come again, but I believe that theKorean cuisine here would far surpass the flavors ofthe sushi. I will have to come again see if what Ibelieve is true!

After a really long day truck shopping the hubbyand I worked up quite an appetite. I don't think wecould have found a better place. We alreadybookmarked this for dinner so it was a bonus thatToyota was a short drive away!

Okay, that's out of the way.
I think all I really need to say is if you love Japaneseand Korean cuisine, just go! It's great. If you like itspicy and you're of fairer complexion, tell them youwant the real deal. Make sure you can handle itthough. If it's not spicy enough, ask for more heat!
Sue was our fantastic server. It took her a second towarm up but after a second, she was awesome! Shewill help if you are unfamiliar and she will help ifyour familiar too! She was great. I like this restaurant ! it has a very good service andvery good choices between sushi and Koreandishes. If you do not get immediate attention ringthe bell located at every table to call the server'sattention.I prefer the sushi over the Korean dishesbut is a matter of taste. They offer happy hour till 8pm. Portions are big so share.
