April 23, 2012

Dear Friends:

It is a great pleasure to welcome everyone as New York Women in Communications celebrates its 42nd Matrix Awards Luncheon.

New York is proud to be a place where everyone who works hard has an opportunity to pursue her dreams. Opportunity is what our City is all about, and all the women here today are terrific examples of the world-class talent and drive that make the Big Apple a global communications capital. And as we invest in the industries—from digital media and technology to film and television production—that promise to power our economy in the years to come, we look forward to NYWICI continuing to lead the way and serving as role models for the next generation of New York’s women.

On behalf of our grateful City, congratulations to today’s honorees, who make up a real who’s who of innovators and pioneers—Tyra Banks, Gayle Butler, Glenn Close, Maria Cuomo Cole, Ann Curry, Laura Desmond, Zenia Mucha, and Peggy Noonan. Please accept my best wishes for a terrific luncheon and continued success.

Sincerely,

Michael R. Bloomberg Mayor

The New York Women in Communications Foundation, formally established in 2000 after issuing limited support since the mid-1990s, exists to help a sisterhood of women successfully enter or navigate the profession of communications through financial support, professional guidance and ongoing friendship An arm of New York Women in Communications, Inc, the 501c3 Foundation annually awards scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 to high school, college and graduate school students Through 2011, we have awarded close to $1 million in support to over 180 women

The Foundation is the largest organization providing scholarship support for women studying communications in the country It also hosts educational programs, including an annual Student Communications Career Conference for women just beginning their careers The 2012 conference will be Saturday, November 17 Thanks to the Foundation’s support, this year’s scholarship recipients will be able to acquire skills and education that will help them become future leaders within their chosen field of communications, and they will no doubt be just as outstanding, exceptional and diverse as the recipients that came before them

NEW YORK WOMEN IN COMMUNICATIONS FOUNDATION

As the premier organization for female communications professionals in the New York metro area, New York Women in Communications, Inc (NYWICI) has a long history Founded in 1929, today the not-for-profit association has just over 2,000 members – from senior executives to students and from entrepreneurial business owners to young professionals – in a variety of communications disciplines including print journalism, broadcasting, corporate communications, publishing, social media, advertising, integrated marketing, photography, public relations, graphic design and more

NYWICI’s mission is to empower women in all communications disciplines to reach their full potential We promote professional growth and inspire members to achieve and share their success We actively encourage leadership and professional development through committee involvement and program development as well as through networking opportunities that connect women who connect the world We also promote high standards and provide educational opportunities for current members and the next generation of communications professionals

Our members share a spirit of sisterhood, serving as role models, career advisors and mentors They are women who connect the world

Welcome to the 42nd annual Matrix Awards Luncheon Today’s program recognizes eight outstanding women whose leadership and achievements have individually and collectively helped change the world of communications They join the ranks of 275 accomplished award winners who came before them On behalf of the Board and all the members of New York Women in Communications (NYWICI), I offer my congratulations to the 2012 Matrix Award winners Each in her own unique way is a great role model and tremendous inspiration

NYWICI has worked tirelessly for more than 80 years – since 1929 – with a single mission: to empower women in communications to reach their full potential That’s as true now as ever In that spirit, today we also recognize a number of outstanding young women pursuing their education in the field of communications Competition for a scholarship this year, as always, was steep, but we are delighted to offer approximately $130,000 in scholarship support in 2012 It ensures our profession will have educated and qualified leaders, visionaries and role models for decades to come

I also want to thank the Interpublic Group (IPG), our Matrix Awards Luncheon host this year, for its many contributions to today’s event I particularly want to thank IPG for its ongoing scholarship support, for designing this year’s Matrix program and for producing the 2012 scholarship recipient video In addition, I want to thank all our other sponsors and supporters who contributed to making this year’s event so incredibly special

I know all of us attending today’s awards program will leave inspired and with a renewed vigor to make a difference for ourselves, our peers and those just entering our industry If you are not already a member of NYWICI, I encourage you to join You will meet others who are passionate about communications and benefit from programs addressing the digital revolution, career development and so much more In the meantime, I urge you all to put inspiration into action, reach high and extend your hand to others The rewards will be endless

On behalf of the New York Women in Communications Foundation Board, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to the 2012 Matrix Awards Luncheon and its celebration of Women Who Change the World Today we honor richly-deserved past and present achievement, but we also recognize potential future leaders of our industry – the 2012 New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship Recipients

The New York Women in Communications Foundation, a 501c3, is the non-profit arm of New York Women in Communications Once again this year, the Foundation is able to reward nearly 20 young women with scholarship support ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 But we are only able to do so thanks in part to the generosity of organizations that include Meredith, Condé Nast, Scholastic, Interpublic Group, Horizon Publishing, Hearst, McGraw-Hill, News Corporation and WE tv as well as the Daniel Ladner Foundation, the Nicholas H and Margaret H Carlozzi Charitable Foundation, past Matrix honorees and individuals like you

Your support of the Matrix Awards, Ladies Who Laugh, our online CharityBuzz auction, the Gratitude Wall on our website and use of a Foundation Visa card make today’s scholarships, as well as year-long educational and career development sessions for students and young professionals, possible This year, the Foundation is also undertaking a new initiative – the New York Women in Communications Member Empowerment Grant Program – offering our long-time members financial support to pursue career enrichment opportunities These grant winners will be announced for the first time at our annual meeting on May 17

I know you will find today’s luncheon inspiring I hope it will become the catalyst that triggers your support of the Foundation with a tax-deductible gift To donate online or learn more about the Foundation, go to wwwnywiciorg/foundation Your support will ensure we can continue to invest in, motivate and guide young women on the threshold of their career, women who no doubt are destined to become Women Who Change the World

Message from

The HostIt is an honor for Interpublic to host the 2012 Matrix Awards As one of the world’s largest advertising and communications companies, IPG has more than 20,000 women who work at our digital, PR, events, advertising and media companies across the globe We truly understand the value of women in communications

That’s why we are thrilled to honor today’s Matrix Award recipients We’re especially excited that our agency Deutsch, led by past Matrix winner CEO Linda Sawyer, designed this program It features illustrations of the honorees in the outdoor advertisements we see every day in New York These award-winning women are world-changers, and we wanted to showcase them in a way that’s larger than life

At IPG, we work hard to be a leader at recruiting, retaining and promoting women at all levels of our company This commitment has taken many forms, from starting a global Women’s Leadership Network within IPG, to electing women to the IPG Board of Directors, making our company one of only six Fortune 500 businesses with over 40% representation of women on a board

Teams with broad experiences and inclusive cultures generate higher levels of innovation and creativity And we know specifically that companies with the highest representation of women financially outperform companies with the lowest representation

The Matrix Awards are important for so many reasons – not least among them is that the event serves as a key fundraiser for the New York Women in Communications Foundation’s annual scholarship program These grants help cultivate future leaders in our business, as you’ll see in the video IPG agency R/GA has prepared featuring this year’s scholarship winners

Today, we congratulate each of these impressive Matrix honorees and the scholarship recipients for their inspiration and leadership It is an honor to be in your company

MERYL STEBEL ART DIRECTOR, DEUTSCH

ELIZABETH MAERTENS ASSOCIATE CREATIVE DIRECTOR,

The talented women below, who worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes to ensure the 2012 Matrix program and videos were the best yet, are typical New York Women in Communications members – they care about their careers, they support one another and they connect with the women who connect the world. So it was a no-brainer when we asked them to share some valuable career words of wisdom. Get a leg up yourself by reading what advice they had to offer.

Q. What advice would you offer someone just beginning their career?

A. “You are unique. That is something that can’t be taught, so develop and defend it!”

Q. How has mentoring played a role in your career development?

A. “The mentors and other role models in my life have taught me to be passionate about my work, and they continually inspire me to find the strength in my own voice and ideas and to look at problems and challenges from many different angles.”

DEUTSCH

MARGARET TEICH VIDEO PRODUCER, HEARST DIGITAL MEDIA MARGARET TEICH VIDEO PRODUCER,

Q. What’s been your career “aha” moment to date?

A. “It actually happened on my very first day as an intern in Hearst’s video department. I was supposed to just hold a bounce board at an outdoor shoot, but I started approaching women asking them to be in our video, collaborating with the on-air talent and contributing ideas. My boss appreciated my efforts and saw it as a boon to the entire team. So I learned to do what comes naturally and that it can certainly work in your favor.”

SHANNON LEIGH POST PRODUCTIONS SUPERVISOR, HEARST DIGITAL MEDIA SHANNON LEIGH POST PRODUCTIONS SUPERVISOR,

Q. What advice would you offer to someone just beginning their career?

A. “I have three pieces of advice. First, go over and above what is expected of you. It can be draining, but in the long run it will be recognized, valued and appreciated. Second, do not take professional criticism personally. Third, own your mistakes—when you mess up do not pass the blame because it’s bad karma and will make you look juvenile.”

ASHLYE VAUGHAN PRODUCTION MANAGER, DIGITAL STUDIO, R/GA

Q. Who or what inspires you at work?

A. “I’m inspired by risk takers and people who go against the grain for what they want and believe in. Robert Greene’s book “The 48 Laws of Power” has shaped my thinking about my career and made me a stronger leader.”

What’s the best advice you have ever been given? Check out our video series featuring Matrix Award winners and create your own video at www.nywici.org.

It may appear as if Tyra Banks has it all – and she may – but she had to break down plenty of barriers to become the highly influential media figure she is today Tyra began her spotlight career path at the tender age of 19 when she made history during her first season in Paris by being the first model to book 25 shows But, modeling wasn’t all that she wanted

Tyra proves to the world in countless ways that she is more than just a pretty face She transformed to businesswoman in 2003 after establishing Bankable Incorporated (now known as The Tyra Banks Company) and is currently enrolled in Harvard Business School Additionally, Tyra has partnered with Demand Media for the launch of typeFcom, a revolutionary new fashion and beauty site And recently, she wrote her first young adult fantasy adventure novel titled “Modelland,” which became a New York Times best-seller

Tyra also has a full-time role on television as Creator, Executive Producer and Host of “America’s Next Top Model,” which is now syndicated in more than 100 countries And, as if that weren’t enough TV exposure for

the super-mogul, she was also the Host and Executive Producer of her own daily talk show titled “The Tyra Show,” which was awarded two Daytime Emmys

Her energy and motivation stem from young girls who feel they aren’t good enough because they don’t look like images they see in magazines She is committed to her personal mission to empower women and expand the definition of beauty She has even been dubbed the “Queen of Self-Esteem” for this ongoing effort, and she is rightly so proud of the designation On her daytime talk show, she regularly addressed these topics to continue this important dialogue

Not surprisingly, Tyra suggests people “think outside the box – if one door closes, go to the next” And she practices what she preaches Did you know that when she began modeling she was rejected by seven agencies? Instead of giving up, she kept going until finally one agency said yes That same year, she funded a scholarship to help young women attend her alma mater, Immaculate Heart High School in Los Angeles

Katie Couric is an award-winning journalist and TV personality, well-known cancer advocate and New York Times best-selling author of “The Best Advice I Ever Got: Lessons From Extraordinary Lives” Beginning in September 2012, she will host “Katie,” a new syndicated daytime daily talk show Katie joined the Disney/ABC Television Group in summer 2011 and serves as Special Correspondent for ABC News, contributing to “ABC World News,” “Nightline,” “20/20,” “Good Morning America,” “This Week” and primetime news specials

In September 2006, Katie joined CBS News and became the first female solo anchor of an evening news broadcast On May 31, 2006, she completed a 15-year run as Co-Anchor of NBC News’ “Today”

Katie is also a co-founder of Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), co-founder of the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance (NCCRA) with the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) and Lilly Tartikoff, and co-founder of the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health She is also a 1999 Matrix Award winner

Another Tyra claim to fame – she was the first woman to be seen simultaneously on primetime and daytime television She also has a high profile on social media sites as the fourth highest-ranked celebrity on Google+, more than 5 million followers on Twitter and more than 1 million Facebook friends With that broad audience spectrum, Tyra strives to help people stand up to unrealistic stereotypes created by images we are bombarded with in popular culture Similarly, she hopes that by being honored with the Matrix Award her message of expanding the definition of beauty inside and out will reach an even greater audience

She works to reinforce her goal of inspiring girls around the world to not only accept who they are but to embrace their individuality and go on to be the best version of themselves they can be “Stay laser-focused on your goals by defining what you want to accomplish – both in your career and your personal lives,” asserts Tyra “Realize that any current struggles you’re going through are only temporary and with hard work they will lead to greater things” Good advice indeed, and no doubt words her mother Carolyn, whom Tyra cites as her biggest influence, likely shared with Tyra many years ago

Ask Gayle Butler about opportunities across the media landscape and you’re immediately immersed in a conversation about innovation and setting new directions to help women improve their lives The Editor-in-Chief of Better Homes and Gardens since 2006, Gayle exudes enthusiasm – and a touch of awe – about the infusion of technology into media that “brings into focus how many new ways we have to make our lives better”

Exploring new boundaries has been a hallmark of Gayle’s career along with her ongoing practice of working with new people as a way to keep growing She joined the Meredith Corporation in 1983, first in public relations and then rising through the ranks to hold senior editorial positions As Editorial Director at Better Homes and Gardens Special Interest Publications and Creative Collection, she oversaw a portfolio of more than 100 publications She added her imprint with award-winning initiatives including Diabetic Living In June 2011, she was named Executive Vice President

and Creative Content Leader for the Meredith National Media Group, overseeing all creative activities

Gayle began her career as Press Secretary to Representative M Caldwell Butler of Virginia (no relation) That experience was very educational “He was such an honest listener, actively seeking opinions I learned how important it is to listen with an open mind,” she explains

That lesson translated into her own “aha moment” years later Before becoming Editor-in-Chief, Gayle toured the country talking to small groups of women Listening to them, she realized how much they valued the “magazine experience,” which for them was more than simply reading an article

“Women are so busy To them, reading the magazine represented their private time – even if only for 15 minutes,” points out Gayle “They could be inspired and refreshed in that short time” It is a message that

Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito is also a renowned cookbook author having written nine cookbooks, one of which won the 2004 James Beard Award for Best Cookbook and two that have been New York Times best-sellers He graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 1986 and from Boston University in 1990 He has also studied French cooking at the prestigious Jardin de Cynge Restaurant in Paris and worked at Adrienne in NYC Rocco further honed his French cooking techniques, combining them with Asian ingredients, while working at Aujourd’hui in Boston Today, fusing cooking techniques is part of Rocco’s culinary signature

In 1997, Rocco opened Union Pacific His innovative cooking quickly earned the restaurant three stars from The New York Times Two years later, Rocco was named America’s Best New Chef by Food & Wine, and in 2000 he was named Most Exciting Young Chef by Gourmet Rocco began his radio career in 2000 hosting “Food Talk,” an hour-long talk show on WOR 710 Radio that ran through December 2005 In the fall of 2005, Rocco also hosted “Rocco Gets Real” for the A&E Network, and more recently “Rocco’s Dinner Party” aired on Bravo

still resonates with Gayle and continually motivates her to explore new topics and new media platforms “to be where the consumer is”

That’s one of the reasons why Gayle considers launching the magazine’s healthy eating series one of her greatest professional achievements And in an effort to reach even wider audiences, she expanded the brand via multiple digital touchpoints including social media, interactive digital editions and an enhanced website That same commitment to meeting people’s needs extends to her staff “Always acknowledge the contributions of others in a team,” Gayle says, while defining an effective manager as a person who “clarifies goals and gives creative people room to do what they do best”

Gayle readily admits that’s why receiving the 2012 New York Women in Communications Matrix Award means so much to her “because it reaffirms my commitment to helping women” As for advising women just entering the communications arena, Gayle urges them to “really learn your craft Learn the fundamentals of your field, develop a level of expertise and then add to it You have to own your career path” She explains that it used to be that you stepped up a well-defined ladder but “now you need skill sets in a variety of media and maybe to reinvent yourself now and then”

While acknowledging this is a wonderful time to be Editor-in-Chief, Gayle can envision another career that takes her back into politics doing advocacy work for childhood education or bringing civil discourse “back into the conversation” For now, however, this novice hiker has set a new, shorter-term personal goal to explore the Appalachian Trail with her husband Clearly Gayle is still moving ahead and setting a good example for all to follow

“I won’t be ignored” may be among Glenn Close’s most memorable lines of dialogue, delivered in 1987’s “Fatal Attraction,” but it’s also an apt description for her career After all, who can ignore six Oscar nominations, three Tony Awards, three Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, one Obie Award, one Screen Actors Guild Award and countless more nominations? These richly deserved accolades are no surprise given that Glenn is hands down one of our most respected American actresses and someone who has “never been afraid to go to the mat for my characters’ best interests”

Born in Greenwich, Connecticut, “I have no doubt the days I spent running free and unfettered in the Connecticut countryside, playing characters in various games, is one reason why acting seems so natural to me,” Glenn admits In fact, she recalls her young fascination “wanting to be Hayley Mills I thought that if I ran away and knocked on Walt Disney’s door, he’d put me in his movies” Turns out her professional training had to wait until Glenn studied theater at Virginia’s College of William and Mary

Glenn’s movie debut, and first Oscar nomination, occurred with 1982’s “The World According to Garp,” and there’s been no stopping her since then Roles in such classic films as “The Big Chill,” “The Natural,” “Dangerous Liaisons” and “101 Dalmatians” followed, to name just a few Her latest Oscar-nominated role in “Albert Nobbs” brings her full circle, having first played the role off-Broadway in 1982 The film, which she co-wrote and co-produced, tells the story of the lonely existence of a virtually invisible human, and Glenn describes it as “the biggest challenge of my entire career It’s a simple story, but it packs a huge emotional wallop” For her portrayal of Nobbs, Glenn received the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Foreign Actress, was voted Best Actress at the 2011 Tokyo International Film Festival and was honored at the San Sebastian, Hollywood, Mill Valley and Palm Springs film festivals

Her award-winning TV work includes an Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy for “Serving in Silence: The Margarethe Cammermeyer Story,” and consecutive Outstanding Lead Actress Emmys for her portrayal of

Deputy Chief Theresa Shortell’s career with the New York City Police Department spans almost 28 years Over the years, she has truly done it all

After being appointed to the department in 1984, Chief Shortell quickly rose through the ranks She was promoted to Sergeant in 1989, Lieutenant in 1997, Captain in 2001, Deputy Inspector in 2004, Inspector in 2007 and Deputy Chief in 2009 She has served within the Patrol Services Bureau, Transit Bureau, Internal Affairs Bureau, Organized Crime Control Bureau and the Narcotics Division Currently the Commanding Officer of the citywide Gang Division, Deputy Chief Shortell has also been the Commanding Officer of the Special Victims Division, Greenwich Village’s 6th Precinct, Brooklyn’s 94th Precinct in Greenpoint as well as the Queens Transit District

Chief Shortell has always prioritized her education She holds degrees from Marist College and the State University of New York and is a graduate of the Police Management Institute at Columbia University and the FBI National Academy She was also named “Woman of the Year” by the National Police Defense Foundation in 2009

PRESENTER:high-stakes litigator Patty Hewes on “Damages” It also includes her award-nominated performance in “The Shield” Glenn admits she drew strength and inspiration for the role of Captain Monica Rawling from Deputy Chief Theresa Shortell, Commanding Officer, NYPD Gang Division

Glenn’s resume includes theater as well, including Tony Awards for her work in “Sunset Boulevard,” “The Real Thing” and “Death and the Maiden” But Glenn is quick to share the credit for her illustrious career “I’ve been blessed to work with generous, phenomenally gifted people,” she says

Glenn’s own generosity cannot be overlooked as she supports such non-profit organizations as the Sundance Institute, the Panthera Conservation Advisory Committee and Puppies Behind Bars But perhaps most dear to her heart is BringChange2Mindorg, a non-profit Glenn launched in 2009 dedicated to confronting the stigma and discrimination associated with mental illness by helping to translate cutting-edge science in the field of stigma research into effective and measurable messaging There is serious mental illness in Glenn’s family “What I should support and call attention to was right in my face,” Glenn relates, “so I am using the media to help change people’s minds regarding mental illness”

“I love the chemistry that can be created between actors and audiences,” concludes Glenn “The energy is molecular” Her lucky audiences – past, present and future on stage, TV or film – no doubt agree

Maria Cuomo Cole HELP USA 5 Hanover Square, 17th Floor New York, NY 10004

Dear Maria:

Congratulations on receiving a 2012 Matrix Award. I’m so proud of you!

I can’t think of a more deserving honoree – one who embodies leadership, focus, humanitarian commitment, and above all, strength of will. The diversity and ever-expanding reach of your accomplishments are astounding, and I am proud to join in recognizing the enormous impact you have had on countless lives, from the homeless and war veterans to at-risk children and victims of domestic violence.

Your leadership as Chairman of HELP USA has been extraordinary, consistently expanding the organization’s life-changing presence across the nation to reach over a quarter-million men, women, and children. Your tireless work to prevent gun violence – from the Brady Campaign to the powerful documentary Living for 32 – has enhanced your position as an invaluable advocate for the safety and wellbeing of our people, our communities, and our nation.

You are an inspiration in so many ways, and I can’t wait to see all the great things you’ll do next. Congratulations again!

With affection,

ANDREW M. CUOMO

“I was looking for an apartment and I found a life,” says Stan Tarnaki, one of the hundreds of thousands of people that have received support services through HELP USA, the non-profit organization chaired by Maria Cuomo Cole She believes that telling their stories, in their own voices, creates the most effective form of advocacy She began working for the organization more than 20 years ago as its Communications Director, developing all facets of external relations

Today HELP USA is the largest provider of services for the homeless, victims of domestic violence and war veterans, operating 30 supportive residences across the nation, serving 250,000 people since its inception – along with providing job training, employment services and mentoring to at-risk youth Long before YouTube, Maria was capturing on video the countless stories of the men, women and their families that were in dire need of assistance “Technology has been a gift for bringing about change,” she explains “With social media, there’s a global community with tremendous power and opportunity”

That passion for telling stories that needed to be heard developed into a love of producing and directing public service announcements and short films on issues such as homelessness, domestic violence and gun violence “Living for 32,” about a survivor from the Virginia Tech shooting, was shortlisted for an Academy Award and premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival Her latest documentary, “The Invisible War,” delves into the often-hushed topic of sexual violence in the military It premiered at Sundance this year and won the Sundance Audience Award

On winning this year’s Matrix Award, Maria admits that it’s a “delightful affirmation from New York’s most dynamic group of professionals and serves as an endorsement of a shared course to create a better world for our children” A matrix is the point at which something else develops, Maria adds, “so if you can follow your passions and instincts, doors will open and opportunities will arise that bring you closer to your true purpose”

US Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has made her presence felt in Washington, helping lead the fight to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” and passing legislation to provide health care for the 9/11 first responders who are sick from toxins at Ground Zero, leading Newsweek and The Daily Beast to name Senator Gillibrand one of “150 Women Who Shake the World”

The New York Times called her commitment to promoting transparency in Congress a “quiet touch of revolution,” and The Sunlight Foundation, the leading advocacy organization dedicated to openness in government, praises Senator Gillibrand as a “pioneer” for her work

This Congress, she earned another major legislative victory by passing legislation in the Senate that for the first time makes any insider trading by members of Congress, their staff and federal employees clearly illegal The Washington Post called the bill “the most substantial debate on congressional ethics in nearly five years”

Maria says her parents and their eclectic group of friends and colleagues opened the doors for her to pursue a life of creating change Her father, former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, introduced her at a very young age to his magical world of philosophy, literature and poetry His passion for challenging the status quo and fighting for social justice defined their family values “He taught us all to aspire to something bigger than ourselves,” Maria says “He’s still living his life this way and continues to inspire me every day”

And the women, she points out, were especially courageous, breaking cultural boundaries as feminists, mothers and Americans who wanted to be part of creating solutions Geraldine Ferraro and Nita Lowey were both “moms” from Queens, NY, where Maria grew up Together with her mother Matilda, they stepped out of the comfort zone imposed by their generation and dedicated themselves to the political process in order to improve the local and greater communities

Maria says that at this point in her life, she feels fortunate to be surrounded by the people she loves the most and from whom she gains her strength Her greatest achievement, blessing and satisfaction are her “three smart, strong and sweet daughters” Professionally, she is most proud of the growth of HELP USA’s impressive residences and those whose lives have been improved because of its homes and services

She also offers some straight-talking advice for young women: “Follow your passions Be brave Find mentors Ask questions Read Wonder” And what advice does her clothing retailer husband of 25 years, Kenneth Cole, offer? “Wear what feels good” and “if you have confidence, you can look good in anything”

She’s been your refreshing morning coffee companion as the Co-Anchor of “Today” and your in-depth evening news informant on “Dateline NBC” and more recently “Rock Center with Brian Williams” And when the world is in crisis – albeit tsunami, earthquake, terrorist attack or war – Ann Curry rolls up her sleeves, puts her personal life in the capable hands of loved ones, and dashes to the center of the action to bring you front-and-center journalism that she calls “an act of faith in the future”

Is there any wonder Forbes named her among the top 100 most powerful women of the world in 2011? Ask Ann about it and she shrugs it off: “Power is the ability to influence”

This is no time for modesty, however The power to deliver globally-impacting news with swift, credible integrity is an admirable feat, and Ann’s resume contains assignments that would make even brave men shake in their boots This daring correspondent traveled to Sudan to report ethnic-cleansing violence in Darfur; to Serbia to cover the dreadful state of mental institutions; and to Kosovo to disclose the horrific

genocide-related refugee crisis She joined First Lady Laura Bush to explore the AIDS epidemic in Africa; and she was one of the first broadcasters to reach Haiti after the devastating earthquake there She has the moxie to report the humanitarian, strife-ridden news we may not want to know, but need to know in order to build awareness that affects positive change

Interestingly, broadcast news was not Ann’s intended path after college “I planned on becoming a newspaper editor I was not inclined to be on TV – I was ‘grunge’ before the term existed I was shy and had a cultural disposition that made me not want to potentially bring shame on my family,” she explains “But someone told me about an internship at a local TV station I realized that the marriage of the right words and pictures could pack a punch”

However, Ann had no female career inspiration “Honestly, there were not a lot of women in broadcasting when I started Who really inspired me was Walter Cronkite,” she admits “But there were a few women like Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer and Connie Chung who

In September 2011, Meredith Vieira was named to a new role as Special Correspondent for “Rock Center with Brian Williams” She will contribute her signature reporting for the broadcast as well as for “Today,” “NBC Nightly News” and other NBC News programs Additionally, Meredith will contribute to special networking programming including the 2012 London Olympic Games

Meredith joined “Today” in September 2006 as Co-Anchor During her five years there, she covered some of the biggest news stories of our time Prior to joining NBC News, Meredith had been Moderator of ABC’s “The View” since the show’s inception in 1997 Meredith started at ABC in 1993 as Chief Correspondent of “Turning Point” Prior to her work at ABC, she spent more than a decade at CBS News, working as a Correspondent for “60 Minutes” and “West 57th” as well as Co-Editor at “60 Minutes” and Contributing Correspondent on the “CBS Evening News with Dan Rather” Meredith currently serves as Host of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” a position she’s held since 2002 Meredith is also a 2007 Matrix Award winner

showed me there was a place for women in broadcasting,” Ann continues

Rising to the top of the news chain certainly wasn’t a piece of cake “I feel I had to earn any career progress and that it took a long time,” says Ann “Becoming the News Anchor of ‘Today’ wasn’t something I ever expected It’s such an iconic window into what America cares about and being invited into the broadcast meant a great deal to me”

“I’m old enough to remember how hard it was for women in our business 30 years ago When I started, I was the first woman in the newsroom where I worked Bosses then felt there was no place for women in the newsroom because they had no news judgment and couldn’t carry the camera,” recalls Ann But that’s why winning the Matrix Award means so much to her: “To get an award from other women in the communications industry means I’ve come full circle – it’s a really sweet award to me”

“Journalism is still not a perfectly equal world,” Ann adds “But I am happy to hear the footsteps of women coming behind me They inspire me and I hear them cheering me on We all need to pave the future for our daughters and other women – it’s part of paying dues for the real privilege of doing the great work we do”

And while the Emmy Award-winning broadcaster has attained about every career milestone imaginable, she isn’t hanging up her microphone just yet “I’m just getting around to writing a bucket list,” she says, “because I feel I’m just getting started!”

Laura Desmond was one of the youngest-ever CEOs when appointed to lead Starcom MediaVest Group (SMG) globally in 2008, but that was only the first of many marks she has made on the agency and communications business She is regarded throughout the industry as a game-changer, a true innovator and the lead architect in building the media agency of the future

According to Laura, her success comes from knowing that big risks deliver big success “I have had a remarkable career in the sense that there are so many moments that have defined my professional path,” Laura says “Starting at Leo Burnett, then working on GM, taking over Latin America and moving to New York to take the reins of MediaVest and transforming it into a powerhouse All of this has allowed me to step into a global role”

But such skills are meaningless without clients for whom to create innovative work Laura’s prowess as a client collaborator is unparalleled She ushered in

On a personal level, Laura has been awarded multiple times already for her leadership, mentorship and huge contribution to the marketing world She was named “Ad Woman of the Year” in 2009, recognized in The Wall Street Journal’s Creative Leadership Series in 2007 and its “Women to Watch” issue in 2006 Laura was also awarded Advertising Age’s “Media Maven” honor in 2005 and inducted into the American Advertising Federation’s Advertising Hall of Achievement in 2005 To top off her recognition as a woman changing the business world, Laura was named one of the world’s most powerful women by Forbes

As if those accolades weren’t enough, Laura admits her greatest achievement is still in front of her and that on a personal note she hopes one day to sail around the world “This is a personal goal and a metaphor for my professional aspirations as well,” she explains “Life is a journey There are challenges Storms Episodes of smooth sailing Then there are the ports and the people you meet along the way Every interaction and development enriches the journey My quest is to expand and evolve my creative capacity to succeed and to never stay still for too long”

That’s advice she shares with young women just

starting their careers as well: “Take chances early on Take on global assignments Take on growth or new innovation assignments Embrace risk Do not be afraid of failure because without failure there is no advancement Build your own experiences by working in unusual areas in your company that grant you exposure to senior people you can learn from and be inspired Do not for a minute change anything about yourself Be who you are Be bold”

If you know Zenia Mucha at all, one thought might come to mind – the American Dream As a child, she immigrated to the US with her parents and, as she recounts, “I was a first-generation immigrant” While she admits she’s been inspired by many individuals throughout her career, her parents have been the most inspirational people in her life

“I watched my parents try for ten years to come to the United States and get repeatedly turned down,” she remembers “It was their resilience in striving to come to America for a better life that was truly an inspiration for me Once I was here, I never really saw any barriers It was more about doing the things I wanted to do and the things I was passionate about”

Given her childhood experience, it’s no surprise that Zenia developed an interest and passion for politics, starting as a volunteer supporting political campaigns, which later turned into a 20-year professional career in politics In her last political role, she served as the Director of Communications and Senior Policy

Advisor to New York Governor George Pataki During that time, she earned a reputation in the media and political circles as being one of his closest advisors and confidantes It was her political experiences that shaped Zenia’s belief that the “communications role is a critical component of business” and, as she describes it, provided the right foundation for her move into corporate communications

Today, as Executive Vice President and Chief Communications Officer at The Walt Disney Company, Zenia is responsible for all global communications, including acting as chief spokesperson and overseeing communications strategy and media relations for the company, its business segments and its philanthropic and environmental initiatives Her role also includes oversight of internal communications, the Walt Disney Archives and D23, and she sees definite similarities between her work in politics and corporate America

“In government service, you get an enormous amount of experience as you work on various policies involving

Barbara Walters, a 1978 Matrix Award winner, has interviewed more statesmen and stars than any other journalist She made journalism history by arranging the first joint interview with Egypt’s President Anwar Sadat and Israel’s Prime Minister Menachem Begin Other “firsts” include an hour-long primetime conversation with Cuba’s Fidel Castro, being the first American journalist to interview Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and the first to interview President and Mrs Bush after 9/11

In 2004, after 25 years as Co-Host and Chief Correspondent of ABC News’ “20/20,” Barbara left the show to begin a new phase in her career at the network she first joined in 1976 She is seen nearly every day as Co-Host of “The View,” a show she created, co-owns and for which she serves as Executive Producer “The View” received the 2003 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show and all the co-hosts collectively won a 2009 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host, a “first” in Emmy history

Prior to joining ABC, Barbara appeared on NBC’s “Today” for 15 years, and she is also a New York Times best-selling author of “Audition,” her very revealing memoir

legal and financial issues as well as working with multiple agencies Everyone has their responsibilities yet they need to work toward a common goal,” she explains “Similarly at Walt Disney, we have a number of different businesses, all with unique identities that need to grow as an individual business yet fit into the global company vision”

As a 2012 Matrix Award winner, Zenia considers herself “privileged to be among such a stellar group of women in this field who have come before me and those recognized with me this year It’s quite an honor” She also notes that it represents another example of how communications has become such an integral part of corporate America

In discussing what makes her most proud, Zenia easily says it’s “the people I’ve worked with or who have worked for me whether they were interns, assistants or junior team members Many of them have gone on to become extremely successful leaders in their own right I tried to instill in them that irrespective of where they started, their future is the future they want it to be They just need to focus and work hard and understand it doesn’t happen overnight If you are persistent and work hard, there are people who will recognize that and you can achieve anything you want”

Her mantra, it seems, is that at the end of the day you have to believe in what you do, in your product and in your company Zenia’s advice to women entering the workforce today is not to look for limits but rather look at opportunities Take on challenges with optimism and remember that “when you believe in what you do, there are no limits” Good advice indeed

Peggy Noonan – Wall Street Journal columnist, best-selling author of eight books and two-time presidential speechwriter – is living proof that life is what you make of it Born in Brooklyn in 1950, Peggy was the third of seven children in a blue-collar Irish Catholic family After a few years in Massapequa Park, Long Island, the family moved to New Jersey Life was not easy Money was always tight on her father’s salesman’s salary, and throughout school Peggy worked as a waitress After graduating from Rutherford High School, she took a job as a clerk at Aetna She began attending Fairleigh Dickinson University at night and ultimately became one of the first members of her family to earn a college degree

Politically, Peggy, her siblings, her parents and grandparents were Democrats At age 10 or 11, she peddled her bicycle around her neighborhood distributing John Fitzgerald Kennedy-Lyndon Baines Johnson campaign literature and bumper stickers Things began to change when a friend gave her a copy of National Review, William F Buckley’s magazine What she read there influenced her enormously – in fact,

she’s described the magazine as her “first conservative friend”

She turned away from the Democratic Party for good after traveling with other protesters to an anti-war demonstration in Washington She was alienated by the views of the well-off radicals all around her and came to think of them as a “contemptuous elite” with no respect for soldiers or families like her own

She wrote about her conversion this way: “I come from people who were part of the fruits of the FDR realignment – the Catholics of the big cities who fully adhered to the Democratic party in the 1930s and 1940s and never meant to let go – and became myself part of the quiet realignment of the 1980s, in which what had seemed in my youth the party of rich dullards became, almost in spite of itself, the party of the people”

In her book, “What I Saw at the Revolution,” Peggy wrote: “I left Fairleigh with a degree in English Lit, a Journalism minor, and a desire to expose injustice like Ida M Tarbell and Lincoln Steffens” Like many aspiring

Lesley Stahl has been a “60 Minutes” Correspondent since March 1991 Prior to joining “60 Minutes,” Lesley served as CBS News’ White House Correspondent during the Carter, Reagan and George HW Bush presidencies Her reports appeared on the “CBS Evening News” and on other CBS News broadcasts

During much of that time, Lesley also served as Moderator of “Face the Nation,” CBS News’ Sunday public affairs broadcast From October 1990 to March 1991, she supplemented her work at the White House and on “Face the Nation” by joining Charles Kuralt as Co-Anchor of “America Tonight,” a daily CBS News late-night broadcast of interviews and essays

Lesley has also anchored several CBS News documentaries and wrote “Reporting Live,” which chronicled her more than 20-year career covering Washington She has a collection of Emmy Awards, including a 2003 Lifetime Achievement Emmy and a 2005 Business and Financial Emmy Award, as well as an Alfred I duPont-Columbia University Journalism Award and a 1993 Matrix Award

journalists, she was advised to get her start outside the New York area so she headed to Boston She found work as a news writer on the overnight shift at the local CBS radio station, working there from 1975 to 1977 Next she applied for and landed a job on the midnight to 8 am shift at the CBS Network Radio in New York City

At her new job, Peggy was surrounded by journalism legends – Walter Cronkite, Charles Osgood, Charles Kuralt and an array of veteran war correspondents She began as a back-up writer for Walter Cronkite and then became commentary writer for Dan Rather, whom she has called “the best boss I’ve ever had”

By the 1980s, Peggy had become a great admirer of President Reagan, and in 1984 she set her sights on her new dream job: working as a speechwriter in the Reagan White House She put the word out among her colleagues and, amazingly, heard about an opening After thorough vetting and interviewing, she got the job From 1984 to 1986, Peggy was Special Assistant and Speechwriter for President Reagan, working with him on his speech to the nation following the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and his farewell address She also worked for President George HW Bush, creating for him such memorable phrases as “a kinder, gentler nation” and “a thousand points of light”

In addition to her Matrix Award, Peggy received the 2010 Award for Media Excellence, and her columns have been lauded as the “best newspaper commentary out there” by National Journal No doubt, her work, which has been coined “perceptive, persuasive, principled and patriotic” by Forbes, is thought-provoking for readers of all political persuasions

As early as age 13, Lindsay’s love of photography put a smile on her face and drove her to go after a career doing what she loved That passion fed her calling to fashion photography Thanks to a 2006 New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship, Lindsay was able to pursue her unique degree in Political Science, Photography and Entrepreneurship at Syracuse University

The scholarship allowed Lindsay to study abroad in London While living there, she expanded her creative energy and personal expression, she says, by being influenced by people who shared the same passion “It was incredible to be able to connect with others who were passionate about their careers and driven to succeed I loved having conversations with people my age who were as eager and passionate about life as I was” In London, Lindsay also claimed a sense of direction: “I saw how advancing your knowledge around a niche skill sets you apart from your competition”

Upon her return to the US, Lindsay headed to Washington, DC, for an internship at a business photography firm It exposed Lindsay to “business know-how” and gave her the confidence to see photography on an entrepreneurial level The result: today Lindsay owns New York-based Lindsay Adler Photography and works for a variety of magazines, publishing firms and advertising agencies Her work has been featured in several international fashion and photography magazines She also teaches photography at major conferences worldwide and has authored several photography education books Clearly Lindsay is living her passion while also sharing it with the world

Those who know her well, including her mentors, describe Kristen as someone who is goal-oriented In fact, setting life-altering goals has been a way of life for Kristen as early as age 12

She attended Groton School, a college prep school in Groton, MA, that provided just the right environment to enhance a student’s self-confidence She went on to Hofstra University on Long Island, graduating with a major in TV Production and a minor in Dance

Kristen recalls the day she sent in her New York Women in Communications Foundation scholarship application in 2004: “I trekked to the school mailbox during a terrible blizzard, and all I thought about was how excited I felt to apply” When informed she was being considered for an award, Kristen’s confidence rose tremendously “I was thrilled that NYWICI had chosen me for an interview, and I knew that I just needed to be myself during the process I had been preparing for this moment, and I just wanted to connect with the ladies on the interview panel,” Kristen reflects

Kristen impressed those who interviewed her and won a scholarship that year She went on to write and produce programs for BET, MTV, VH1, the Food Network and other media outlets In 2007, she founded JazziDreamer Entertainment LLC, a media consultation company that specializes in writing and production services for television and independent film projects Fate took an incredible turn in 2010 when Kristen

CHRISTINE HAUGHNEYIn preparation for the “real world” of business, Christine attended Wellesley College She knew the school’s excellent student/faculty ratio, small classes and its academic community of high-value engagement, debate and cross-disciplined thinking would put her in good stead for her chosen career – reporter And it was a good start But after three years of working, Christine decided to attend Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, which she was able to do thanks to a 1998 scholarship from the New York Women in Communications Foundation

Graduate school “was one of the most fulfilling experiences,” Christine admits “It enabled me to become the reporter I always dreamed about” She has worked for The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and Crain’s New York Business Today, she is a staff reporter on The New York Times’ Metro Desk covering transportation And she is very grateful for the role her scholarship played in her career: “I have been able to live out my dream of becoming a journalist I get to wake up every day and write stories that I love reporting” No doubt her readers feel Christine’s passion too

Raised in Dubrovnik, Croatia, Vesna immigrated to Canada at age 13 She brought with her the passion and drive to succeed as a reporter The English language may have been her second, but it guided her to exceed beyond even her own expectations and taught her that differentiating herself from others would be an important everyday task

Her quest began by coming to the United States for college and receiving a tennis scholarship in support of her education at Hofstra University on

Long Island There she majored in Speech Communications with a minor in Print Journalism Next was a 2000 New York Women in Communications Foundation scholarship

After graduation, Vesna’s first job was at a small-town newspaper, the Greenwich Time She also wrote for The Stamford Advocate and The National Law Journal, among other print outlets “Starting out small is beneficial for a new writer,” she explains, “because reporting on so many different issues expands your knowledge” Those opportunities also helped set Vesna apart from her competition by perfecting her writing abilities in real time at the young age of 24

Perhaps because she was once an immigrant herself, Vesna chose eventually to focus and report on immigration issues “I am most proud of using my communication skills to write stories about immigrants living in the US, including their struggles, challenges and accomplishments,” says Vesna For her shining coverage of immigration in the US, Vesna was awarded the Special Achievement Award from the International Institute of Connecticut in 2006 Vesna returned to graduate school in 2009 earning a Master’s in International Affairs at The New School Today she is a Media Relations Associate at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in New York where she no doubt continues to give voice to those who don’t always have one

was selected to be a contestant on “Wheel of Fortune” That experience would bring great fortune Within three days and a twist of destiny, Kristen secured an apartment, a job and was chosen to be a part of the Cosby Screenwriting Fellowship, a 16-week program for emerging film and television writers She moved to Los Angeles the very next month Since relocating there, she formed an accountability group, Think Tank, challenging participants to complete a 90-day challenge to accomplish a major life goal

“It’s a joy to be able to say that the New York Women in Communications Foundation supported my education,” says Kristen “The women involved were so supportive and welcoming It truly felt like they opened their arms to all of us who won scholarship awards” Kristen has certainly come a long way, but she gives back too, serving as a mentor to others through Big Brothers, Big Sisters and with the NAACP’s ACT-SO Program
