The Parables of JesusThe Talents

Hear God’s Story

Read the passage together, and discuss the questions that follow. If you examine the words of Jesus in Scripture, you will find that He was always teaching about His Kingdom. It is no different with this parable.

What does Jesus say determined the number of talents each servant was given?

The talents have been interpreted as being resources — time, money, abilities and so on. What lessons can we learn from the obedient servants about the Kingdom?

Based on their actions, what might we infer about the obedient servants and their relationship with their master? What was the reward for faithfulness?

Find Your Story in God’s StoryNow talk about how you will apply the wisdom you’ve obtained from the teaching and Bible study. Then think about practical steps you can take in the coming week to live out what you’ve learned.

There can be no doubt that originally in this parable the whole attention is riveted on the useless servant. There can also be no doubt that he stands for the Scribes and the Pharisees, and for their attitude to the Law and the truth of God. …

Like the man with the talent, they desired to keep things exactly as they were — and it is for that that they are condemned. In this parable Jesus tells us that there can be no religion without adventure and that God can find no use for the closed mind.

— William Barclay, “The Gospel of Matthew: Volume 2”

Last week we focused on the parable of the rich fool. One of the takeaways from that lesson was that we are blessed for others and for the Kingdom, not just for ourselves. How does this parable reinforce that lesson?

How aware are you of the ways you have been blessed with opportunities, abilities and resources?

How could you live in freedom and enjoy the adventure of your relationship with Christ to a fuller extent? Where could you trust Him to use you for His Kingdom?
