Just the Facts: Life Science is dedicated to Glenn Russell Bilanin, the primary person who reminds me of life beyond science.

Acknowledgements:

I am grateful for the inspiration of science educators and colleagues whom I have met through NSTA, the Presidential Award, GSTA, and GYSTC. I am also grateful for the inspiration of three generations: my precious grandmothers, Lucille Green Odom and Josephine Calloway Rich, for raising the incredible people who grew up to become my parents; my phenomenal mother and biggest fan, June Coleman Rich, a champion for all children—especially her own; and my science-teaching sister, Cathy Rich Robinson, whom I admire and love. Finally, I thank my son, Spencer Rich, for his willingness to share me with the world of science education and for exceeding my impossibly high expectations, while maintaining a unique sense of humor.

Just the Facts: Life Science

CD–104136 • © Carson-Dellosa Just the Facts: Life Science

There are millions of animals, plants, fungi, and microscopic organisms that live on Earth. Some are larger than trucks, while others are smaller than the heads of pins. Whatever sizes they may be, it is important to understand the importance of every living organism because each one plays an important role in the balance of Earth’s natural systems. When one organism becomes extinct, it can create a ripple that will affect many other species.

How would the death of a fish population in a local pond affect the community? What great environmental purpose do the ants that gather food in the schoolyard serve? Biologists, ecologists, microbiologists, botanists, and other types of scientists have dedicated their lives to the study of how these organisms live, grow, and reproduce. Without basic scientific knowledge, they would not be able to make accurate observations, analyze data, or answer these and other life science questions.

In Just the Facts: Life Science, students will be exposed to basic, factual knowledge that will allow them to conduct inquiry investigations, much like the experiments that real-world scientists conduct every day. The worksheets and activities in this book will supplement your daily lessons, and some can be used as stepping-stones to full inquiry experiments that students can develop themselves.

How are organisms on Earth tied to each other? Armed with scientific facts and knowledge, scientists carry on the process of inquiry and discovery. Perhaps, one day, it will be one of your students who will reveal the truth.

D I R E C T I O N S : Context clues help us learn new words when we read. Use the words, phrases, and sentences around new words to determine their meanings. Look at the words in the chart and fill in the column “What I Think It Means.” Read the passage and look for context clues to help determine the meanings of the words. Then, fill in the last column, “What It Means in Context.” If your answer in the first column was completely correct, use the second column to add something to the word’s meaning beyond your original ideas.

What does it mean to be alive? What are some of the differences between a bird and a rock? What is the same about a tree and a mouse? Living things come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. You can easily see some living things, such as birds, trees, and people. Other living things, such as mold and bacteria, are too small to see without a microscope. All living things have several things in common. For example, they are all made of small units called cells. Some are made of only one cell, while others are made of millions of cells. The cells of living things need energy to work, grow, and repair themselves. All living things also need to create new cells as they grow and develop throughout their lives. Nonliving things, such as rocks and trucks, do not grow or develop.

If you jump out from behind a curtain to scare a friend, she might scream in response! Living things respond, or react, to their surroundings. A plant in a sunny window will grow toward the sunlight. A squirrel that sees a predator will respond by hiding in a tree. Nonliving things, such as telephones, do not respond to their environment.

All living things reproduce, or make other organisms that are similar to themselves. Trees make seeds that grow into new trees. Some lizards lay eggs that develop into young lizards. Some single-celled organisms split into two parts to make two new cells.

No scientist could know everything about all of the living organisms on Earth—there are too many of them. Scientists who are interested in studying living organisms and ecosystems specialize in one specific area of study, such as animals or food chains. These scientists go to school for many years to become experts in their fields. They also write reports that often are published in scientific journals. What kind of life scientist would you like to be?
