Life is wild! God is good! - Julie Drumbore

Until lately, I thought I knew the origins of the New Testa-ment. Like most conservative evangelicals, I pictured the writings as in circulation during the late first and early second century, gradually gaining acceptance by the churches until a consensus emerged. When asked about the question, I always gave this response -- despite my vague feelings of unease about the formlessness of the process.

Recent study has convinced me that that view is inadequate; and that the New Testament writings, nearly all completed by AD 70, had their pedigree vali-dated by papyrus fragments. And since the works were all in the apostles' hands, then the last of these, Peter, Paul, and John (the only ones of whom we know very much) collected, selected, and approved our 27 books to form what we call the canon. Although there were those in the churches who continued to have ques-tions about some of the books, it was the inspired authors them-selves who had endorsed the collection.

It seems to me that many believers are similarly uneasy with the question of the canon. While absolute certainty is rarely achieved in historical matters, I believe that the clues in Scripture and in papyrology are strong enough to merit serious consideration for this thesis.

Another Trip to Guatemala!

H ello church family! This past year has been a

hectic one what with my political campaign, and follow-up for Guatemala occurred mostly during one Sunday School update which many did not know was happening. I apologize for not providing a written report and expressing my heartfelt gratitude for the support from this body of Christ. A mission team, consist-ing of eleven of us went to Guate-mala for thirteen days last summer. Thank you all for your prayers. We saw evidence of those prayers throughout the trip.

Our God is so faithful! Our finances were provided for, all of our supplies made it through safe-ly and without extra fees. Even in the midst of Guatemala’s rainy season, we only had a few rainy days, and with those we were able to set up a tent to continue our VBS as planned. As is our custom, we spent some time walking through the town, handing out Bibles and inviting children to attend the VBS we hold. We were able to share God’s word with and present the Gospel to around 270 children through the VBS. It was wonderful to see many familiar faces as well as to meet some new ones. We also held three community gospel presenta-tions that were reasonably well attended. Over the years it has been a joy to see how children, families and the community are being transformed by the love of God and the truth of the Gospel. I continue to pray that the Gospel will reach each and every person in La Ciudad Vieja and that they will know and love Jesus and His Word more and more.

This past year we did more medical work than in the past, which while draining for the team, was a huge blessing for the

community. People came in the evening after the VBS, but also at lunch and before dinner. I would estimate that we saw approximately 200 patients during our time there. We could not have provided the care the people needed without your financial generosity and the generous donations of medicine and medical supplies. We (and they) are truly grateful. As many of you know, we went to Guate-mala shortly after the devastating eruption of one of the fire volca-noes not far from the town in which we stay. Many of the people we saw were still suffer-ing from respiratory compli-cations after that eruption. We also had the privilege of taking communion with and spending time praying over a woman with cancer. We held an eyeglass clinic, where we did our best to match each person who needed them, with glasses that best

improved their eyesight.

Several people who received eyeglasses and medical care came to the evangelistic out-reaches. While some helped with medical care, other team mem-bers were either teaching Eng-lish lessons or helping those children who had never learned how to read in Spanish, as illiter-acy there is extremely high. One

boy named Abner, who was about 14 or 15 years old, began to cry when he realized that he was now able to read!

God continues to accomplish His good purposes each year, and we ask for your continued prayer and support as we return to Guatemala again this year. We will be leaving on June 30th and returning on July 13th.

We again plan to hold morning and afternoon VBS, medical clinics, and an eyeglass clinic. We will also continue the commu-nity gospel outreaches, tutoring in English and reading, worship services, showing of Christian movies, and handing out of Bibles. Below you will find a list of our needs as well as ways that you can support us this year.

Please pray for... Increased fluency in Spanish for

us, clarity in communications God’s hand leading, accom-

For the community: Toothbrushes, toothpaste, eye glasses, beanie babies or small stuffed animal, matchbox cars, shoes (gently used shoes and matchbox cars are fine). To avoid jeal-ousy, it is best to give the kids the same school supplies, so it seems best for us to buy the school supplies to keep things standardized. If the Lord is leading you to specifically donate school supplies, please consider a check to BFCN and write Guatemala/school supplies in the memo section.

Guatamala

Pastor Bill, along with co-leader, Mary Beth Brocklebank, will lead an intergenerational group of six-teen to Israel, most for the first time.

You might ask, “why another trip in the same year?” Two reasons 1) we had a number of teachers, educators, and others for whom the March trip was not possible and inquired about the possibility of a summer trip, and 2) since Pat’s passing, our family vacation plans have changed, resulting in my increased availability. Oh, and there is a third, perhaps most important. A pilgrimage to Israel opens one’s eyes and heart to a new and deeper spiritual dimen-sion, brings new insights into the Word of God, and promotes a love for the Jewish people and their land.

A similar trip will be planned for fall, 2020, or spring, 2021, Lord willing. Information will be put forth as soon as plans are solidi-fied. Note: On several Sundays in the summer during the Sunday school hour, there will be a presentation by some of this year’s travelers, sharing insights and highlights about the people, the land, and life-changing experiences.

Second trip to Israel

Rittenhouse Park Baptism

Sunday, July 28 Immediately following the 11:00 a.m. morning service we will meet at Rittenhouse Park. If you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior and have never taken this “next step” of obedience, this is a great opportunity. Please make a note on the bulletin Communication Card or contact one of the pastors for more information.

Mother’s Bible by Marion Treadway

I still have Mother’s Bible With the cover all ripped and torn

The one from which she read. Oh, how the pages are worn!

Her favorite verses marked, Some verses underlined,

What wonderful memories I have Of this sweet mother of mine.

She read from the Scriptures daily And she talked to the Son. She lived her life for Jesus For he was Number One.

With her kids she shared the Bible. Her life spoke louder than words.

She taught her family well About the truth, not what she heard.

If ever a prayer was answered And love written on a face,

It was for a mother, Given by God’s grace.

If you are a mother, Read the Bible, share the news. With the world you can’t win.

With Jesus you can’t lose.

Summer Schedule July 7—Sept 1

Once again, we will enjoy our traditional “Linger in Fellow-ship” time between the two ser-vices (10:00 to 10:50 a.m.) in the Frisbie Center.

This is intentional opportunity for those who attend the 8:30 service or the 11:00 service to “overlap” in fellowship and meet new folks.

Philly soft pretzels, coffee, tea, and/or lemonade are provided, with several visits by the Kona Ice truck thru the summer.

Note: There will also be an Adult Discipleship class in the sanctuary through the sum-mer for those who are interested.

On Monday, July 1st, at 7:00

p.m., we have the privilege to

host Phil & his family again here

at BFCN. Two years ago he

“wowed” us with his magic.

Have you ever seen someone

vanish before your eyes? How

about the person who floats in

the air without special staging or

lighting? Have you watched

while someone is divided in half

while still standing up? YOU

WILL!! And you will be amazed!

This is a wonderful evangelistic

opportunity for the BFCN family.

Invite your friends, neighbors,

co-workers, and extended family

members. Phil shares the

Gospel clearly and boldly. This

is a FREE event for BFCN and

our community.

L ife doesn’t always turn out the way we expect. Everyone experiences hard

times and major loses, and sometimes we wonder if God really cares. But the Book of Ruth show us that disappointments are not the end of the story.

Ruth and Naomi faced tough times, Ruth was a widow, childless, and a Moabite, the cursed enemy of God’s people, Isra-el. Yet God redeemed her. And He changed Naomi’s life from bitter to blessed.

Join us this summer, as we get a close-up look at the Book of Ruth and how it applies to our lives today. Find out how this timeless story points to our ultimate Redeemer Jesus Christ and how it reveals His unconditional love for us – a love that desires to redeem your past, restore your present, and give you a hope filled future!

Orphan Care Update

I t has been an active month for Orphan Care here at BFCN. We

started by hosting a Mid Atlantic Orphan Care Coalition (MAOCC) event on May 2 in Comly Hall. Derrick (in the plaid – he is an aged out case from the foster system who has been adopted) and his adoptive family told their story and the exact reason why the matters of “the fatherless” are concerns that God expects us to be involved in.

Later, Bonnie and Russ Meredith attended the Delaware State Foster Recognition Conference. Many people in our congregation currently or have in their life served in direct fostering.

We then heard an update at the All Kids Can Learn International Board meeting (known specifically as “Villages of Hope” and casually as “the Zambia ministry” - https://www.akclivillageofhope.com/), and the growth continues. Just about this time a year ago, you may recall giving to the cholera crisis that Zambia was facing, shortly after we had sent the 2017 Del-aware container (that was unpacked in

January 2018). Well, thanks to the generosity of our church and many others, the ministry was able to make it through and operations are getting back to normal, which is great as Villages of Hope aims to be a minis-try that generates much of its own income.

The Village population (the orphans that are rescued and live there) is currently 106. We (along with 12 other key partner churches) have been asked to look for 10 chil-dren to be sponsored by our church family. This is a $30 / month com-mitment, very similar to many other good orphan care causes around the world that look for monthly support for the kids. What makes this one a consideration for your support is this is a ministry we know well. We cur-rently have 2 out of our 10 kids cov-ered. If you would like to be one of the 10 from our church family help-ing, the link is below. This is never pressured giving, but we’re confi-dent we can fulfill our role as a part-ner church.

Big Jim headed East!

(to West Africa )

Our own Big Jim Kramer will be traveling to Senegal Girls Home (ages 7-14) with a team from Cross-roads Presbyterian Church, working with Pastor Jim Weaver and his fam-ily. Jim is the Director of West Afri-can Reformed Missions (WARM), a branch of Mission to the World (MTW), July 19 through July 29, 2019.

Jim Kramer taught Jim Weaver 36 years ago and as a young college student they ministered together at Youth for Christ in Wilmington (early 90’s) where the Kidz Klub model of ministry was developed.

The current church planting activi-ty in Senegal, Gambia, etc, is using the Kidz Klub model to minister to and keeping the name – but translated into French for Senegal (national lan-guage). This is quite an encourage-ment to a model developed many years ago!

The purpose of the trip is to pro-vide a vacation Bible school and spir-itual enrichment experience to 37 young Senegalese girls who are in homes provided by the Christian ministry, since their families are not able to adequately care for them, with many at risk of being sold into sexual slavery. Jim will teach through the book of Esther and is actively raising support. If you would like to support this trip, you can send your tax deductible checks to:

Crossroads Presbyterian Church 627 Vance Neck Road Middletown, DE 19709

Please do not put Jim’s name in the memo line but write in the memo line “Senegal Trip”. Please do include a note with the check that it is support for Jim Kramer.

We will look forward to Jim’s report!
