Matt’s Media Tips 12-19 The 12 Tech Tips of Christmas Welcome to the holiday edition of Matt’s Media Tips. Most of you reading this right now are either on holiday break or about to go on one. So in keeping with that theme I thought I would give you my version of this popular Christmas song. Only this version will incorporate tips and tricks that I have learned from my friends and educators around the country and Canada. On the first day of Christmas Molly Hay shared with me the idea of creating a DEN Room. Molly has dedicated a room within her school to be the DEN Room. There students can come watch and interact with Discovery Education before school starts. Molly also hosts DEN meetings once a month for educators around Piqua City Schools (PCS). Open to all PCS educators, participants discuss best practices (what’s working/what’s not), ideas that they can share, and find solutions to questions/issues that they are encountering. They also get reallycool prizes from Molly! On the second day of Christmas Sandy MacDougall shared with me www.tagxedo.com . Like www.wordle.net , Tagxedo actually let’s you create images of your word clouds. Want to do something cool? Upload an image from the Discovery Education library into Tagxedo. Then find some text that corresponds to that image (like a Discovery Education Encyclopedia Article) to make a fantastic image using vocabulary words. Sandy also shares his tips and tricks with his school district, the Halifax Regional School Board, through a website that he created (http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/tilt/DE/ )! On the third day of Christmas Jen Dorman shared with me Flashcards+ . It works on mobile devices and integrates easily with Quizlet! She’s been using it to learn German :-). I also love the Jen’s Digital Storytelling Wiki - an amazing resource for everything and anything you needed to know about putting together a digital story. On the fourth day of Christmas Lance Rougeux shared with me the idea of creating a movie trailer in iMovie with your students to introduce a concept or new school year. Here are two great sites that I found that will show you how-to’s, classroom examples, and pedagogy: Springfield Public Schools, IL , and Technology and Gifted Students: iMovie trailers by Byrdseed Take Teaching to the Next Level Where Microscope and Mouse Meet Connecting to a Global Community of Educators

Matt’s Media Tips 12-19The 12 Tech Tips of Christmas

Welcome to the holiday edition of Matt’s Media Tips.

On the second day of Christmas Sandy MacDougall shared with me www.tagxedo.com. Like www.wordle.net, Tagxedo actually let’s you create images of your word clouds. Want to do something cool? Upload an image from the Discovery Education library into Tagxedo. Then find some text that corresponds to that image (like a Discovery Education Encyclopedia Article) to make a fantastic image using vocabulary words. Sandy also shares his tips and tricks with his school district, the Halifax Regional School Board, through a website that he created (http://hrsbstaff.ednet.ns.ca/tilt/DE/)!

On the third day of Christmas Jen Dorman shared with me Flashcards+.

Here are two great sites that I found that will show you how-to’s, classroom examples, and pedagogy: Springfield Public Schools, IL, and Technology and Gifted Students: iMovie trailers by Byrdseed

On the fifth day of Christmas Nancy Caramanico shared with me a really cool wiki from Vancouver, BC that lists links to tons of great picture and photo manipulation sites and a whole lot more!

On the sixth day of Christmas Kyle Schutt shared with me a link to a fantastic group of Westerville, OH educators who are creating engaging math songs and videos. Check out my favorites - Getting Triggy With It (WSHS Math Rap Song), Superbase, and Do the Quad Solve.

On the seventh day of Christmas Porter Palmer shared with me the location of the DEN Summer Institute 2012. Get your cowboy boots ready! The DEN Summer Institute is heading to the wild wild west. DENSI2012 will take place from July 21-26, 2012 at Montana State University in scenic Bozeman, MT. Find out how you can be one of the 125 participants from around the US and Canada by reading the blog post!

On the eighth day of Christmas Linda Rush shared with me a PowerPoint that includes a simple counting and singing activity from the Twelve Days of Christmas. The graphics help students identify numbers 1-12 as well as being a lot of fun as group activity for children grade k-2 and special education population. Included in the PowerPoint is an embedded movie about Max’s Christmas that was uploaded as linked file.

On the ninth day of Christmas Rita Mortenson shared with me two great science documentaries that her students created and showcased at an area Apple store.

On the tenth day of Christmas Steve Dembo shared with me a fantastic website that explains Web 2.0, Internet Safety, Media Literacy and more!

On the eleventh day of Christmas Meghen Ehrich shared with me what happens if you type “Let it Snow” into your Google search bar.

On the twelfth day of Christmas Discovery Education shared with me the fact that we have even more Theme Pages within the site. Check out the Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa theme pages to find teacher’s guides, encyclopedia articles, images, writing prompts, videos and more!

Bonus - on the thirteenth day of Christmas (there’s a thirteenth day in my version) Max Brooks shared with me a really cool iPad app called Videolicious which is free, easy to use, and highlighted on the next page.

Ok so not much of a song but I hope this edition gives you lots of ideas to mull over the break! I wish each and everyone of you the very best of holidays and a happy new year!

As I mentioned on page two, Max Brooks just shared with me a really cool, and completely free app. Videolicious creates great looking videos automatically from the videos and photos on your iPad, iTouch, or iPhone. That means that you can download videos and images from Discovery Education and edit them on your iPhone, iTouch and/or iPad- what a cool use of a center!

Working with the videos and photos from your iPhone, iTouch, and iPad’s library it outputs videos in a documentary film style and saves the finished work to your Camera Roll. It also includes an extensive library of video ideas as well as detailed instructions that show you how to create each of these things.
