ANGLICANS TO BUILD NEW ANGLICANS TO BUILD NEW ANGLICANS TO BUILD NEW ANGLICANS TO BUILD NEW CHURCHCHURCHCHURCHCHURCH The Anglican congregation at Church of Christ the King on Molesworth Drive, in Mangawhai Village, opposite the Play Centre, have received the authority of the Bishop of Auckland , The Rt Rev’d Ross Bay, to proceed with the building of a new Worship Centre. The present building used for worship, was originally the Mangawhai School, and in 1956 was bought and moved to its present site, and named the Chapel of Christ the King. After many years of faithful service, the building is no longer adequate for the present congregation and its ministry to the wider community, and lacks the facilities required and expected in today’s world. The new Worship Centre will be built alongside the present chapel, and will have an octagonal worship space capable of seating one hundred people. An extension hall will be divided from the worship space by folding doors, which will allow the hall to be used for many different community functions. The doors can be folded back to allow the hall to become part of the worship space for larger functions, services and funerals. The hall will be serviced by a modern well equipped kitchen which can provide for a wide variety of functions. The rest of the building will include toilets, storage space and an office. The building has been designed by Dave Stewart a local draughtsman, and it is hoped that local builders will be engaged to build it. Tenders for its building are now being sought and its hoped that the building will be up and functioning in a few months. The Vicar of the church Rodney Dunlop, who also has re-sponsibility for the Anglican churches in Mangaturoto, Kaiwaka, Hakaru and Paparoa, says that he and the congregation are very excited about the new building and about the new opportunities it will give to the Church to reach out in service to the wider community. “ We hope it’s a place where people will want to gather and meet and we will certainly look forward to using it to serve this community “ he said . A portion of the money required to build the new centre will come from a bequest left to the Diocese of Auckland by a former parishioner and Mangawhai resident, Ms Ray Coulter, who requested that it be specifically used to assist in building a new centre. Gifts and donations from other parishioners and the wider community, will provide the rest of the finances required.

On Wednesday, 20 April members drove to Mangawhai to visit three lovely and different gardens. ‘Honey Lea’ has a path zig-zagging through a northfacing hillside planted with masses of mature shrubs and fruit trees, like guava and fig, which Jill Parsons uses to make delicious jams members enjoyed with her home-made scones. Rhonda Smith’s beautifully landscaped grounds produced outlooks onto ponds, tropical groves, avenues of majestic trees and out towards the harbour. The Dowson’s surprising garden and orchard included immaculately trimmed hedges, topiary, modelled waterfuls and an amazing coloured-bottle sculpture that rose to roof height! On 18 May meet at Centennial Hall at 1.0pm. Best Bloom, Vege and Fruit competitions and Decorative Theme is ‘Autumn’

May will probably have a hint of winter about it and hopefully the weed growth will have slowed some-what. This is the month to prepare your soil for spring and summer planting. Plant evergreen trees and shrubs. Also plant citrus trees. Prepare new planting beds for rose trees and shrubs and work in plenty of compost. Prune back shrubs that have finished flowering. Harvest feijoas as they fall. Guavas will also be rip-ening and can be picked. Camellias, proteas and leucodendrons will be flower-ing to give colour to the garden. Plant cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce and broad beans. Also garlic can be planted this month. It is a good time to plant new strawberry plants as well.

News from the Otamatea Repertory Theatre.News from the Otamatea Repertory Theatre.News from the Otamatea Repertory Theatre.News from the Otamatea Repertory Theatre. “Annie“Annie“Annie“Annie”””” The next major production for 2011 will be “Annie” and will be on stage from July 29th to August 21st. Auditions have been held and a full cast is about to start work on rehearsals. AnnieAnnieAnnieAnnie is a Broadway musical based upon the popular comic strip Little Orphan Annie. The origi-nal Broadway production opened in 1977 and ran for nearly six years, setting a record for the Alvin Theatre in New York. It spawned numerous productions in many countries, as well as na-tional tours, and won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The musical's songs "Tomorrow" and "It's the Hard-Knock Life" are among its most popular musical numbers.

M*A*S*HM*A*S*HM*A*S*HM*A*S*H ORT would like to thank all those people who supported the production of M*A*S*H. The show was a great success in as much that there were a number of new cast and crew members at ORT. This is what makes it so good when everybody gets together and creates a show and fin-ished with fond memories of their time preparing and presenting the show. We look forward to anybody that would like to try or “have a go”. Just contact anybody at ORT for further information.

50505050thththth Anniversary Anniversary Anniversary Anniversary ORT will be celebrating 50 years of theatre in October 2011. This is an important milestone in the performing arts in the region and many people over the years have contributed to the ongo-ing success of the theatre. We would like to ensure that everyone who has been involved in any way over the years has an opportunity to participate. If you know of anyone who would like to be involved but may have moved out of the area, please advise them that we would love to hear from them. Dennise Brownlie and Brian Dent have presented a plan for the weekend and there have al-ready been interest from “out of towners” about what is going to happen. More on this later! Please contact a committee member for further information or contact the theatre.

DON’T FORGETDON’T FORGETDON’T FORGETDON’T FORGET The working bees will continue on Saturday mornings from 9.00 am for about three hours. See you all then, even for a cup of coffee. Next one is planned for April 30th. We have an extensive wardrobe and the costumes are available for hire at attractive rates for any occasion, please contact Frances Yardley on 431 8737, or contact a committee member.

The Annual General Meeting is scheduled for Monday 09th May at 1pm. As a whānau run kō-hanga reo it is impossible for the centre to run without the whānau and community taking on roles on the executive. If you would like to run for Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Property Manager or Health and Safety Officer please ensure that you are at the AGM and you have contacted the kōhanga office to get a description of the role that you are interested in. If you have skills that lend well to these positions, please put forward nominations so that we fill these roles with com-petent and passionate people keen to continue improving our kōhanga. Please bring a plate for a kaitahi Another busy month has passed and we were lucky enough to surpass our goal of $1000 raised to help towards the Christchurch Earthquake Relief efforts. We would like to acknowledge the generous do-nations from the kōhanga whānau, Te Ataarangi students and Paparoa businesses that were made towards the kōhanga reo silent auction in which we raised $1500. Nā tō rourou, nā tōku rourou, ka ora ai te iwi. Ka mau te wehi te roopu kapahaka o Otamatea, arā, Ngā uri o ngā waka. The kōhanga reo was lucky enough to attend the dress rehearsal and performance of the Otamatea Kapahaka Group at the Taitokerau Festival. The children were ab-solutely captivated and the boys are still mimick-ing the haka and refusing to wear t-shirts so they can perform the haka properly.

The Paparoa School invited the kōhanga reo to their marae stay with Tinopai School at Waihaua Marae in Arapaoa. There we learnt haka, poi and raranga. We were also lucky to be part of the ceremony in which the school’s new kapahaka piupiu were blessed and presented to the public. Our kaupapa ako over the last two weeks was about food and manaakitanga, where food comes from, in particular the māra kai, also im-portant tikanga whether on the marae, kōhanga or in the home. We will be looking at safety in the kitchen also. Next term we will be focusing on safety and survival and tuakana teina relation-ships.

Playcentre newsPlaycentre newsPlaycentre newsPlaycentre news Hello everyone, it’s time for a bit of an update from me (Bridget) and all of us at the Maungaturoto Play-centre. Term 1 has just come to an end (finishing off with an Easter egg hunt on the last day) and it is now the school holidays. Playcentre will re-open when Term 2 starts on Monday 2nd May. This term we’ve had a lot of fun as usual. Lots of painting this term. Also a bush walk and ice creams afterwards. All the other usual activities have been enjoyed, the large sand pit, swings and slides, play-dough etc. The highlight of the term though must be our bus trip to Leigh in March. The weather was still nice and warm back then! We enjoyed a ride on a glass bot-tomed boat at the Goat Island Marine Reserve. It was a great way for everyone to get a good look at the fish! Some took the opportunity to enjoy a dip in the water afterwards, while others just enjoyed their pic-nics down on the beach. Also while we were at Leigh we had a look around NZ’s only Reptile Park, where we saw lizards, tuatara and turtles up close, and - not quite so up close - alligators! All in all a very good day was had by all.

Help us to fundraise Help us to fundraise Help us to fundraise Help us to fundraise ---- we now recycle we now recycle we now recycle we now recycle ink/toner cartridges!ink/toner cartridges!ink/toner cartridges!ink/toner cartridges! Please help Playcentre continue to raise funds! You can now bring in your used ink/toner cartridges to Playcentre and we can dispose of them for you. In the process Playcentre will receive a small payment which will go towards our funds. On the topic of fund raising, many thanks to all those folk who purchased Cadbury chocolates from us this term! We raised quite a bit of money, which will go towards getting our play house back in operation. Sadly it was vandalised a few months ago so the kids have been unable to play in it. It won’t be long now and they will have a nice play house to use once again. We have lots of great toys and activities for children between the ages of 0-6 years, and we welcome new families at any time. If you’d like to come along to see if Playcentre is the place for your child(ren) you are welcome to visit us, the first 3 sessions are free (term fees are now only $20 for a single child, $25 for 2 or more children). We are open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for general morning sessions from 9.15 to 12.15, pop in to visit us or call for more information on 431 8517.

The March meeting of the Otamatea Grey Power was held on the 30th in the Anglican Church Hall. It was well attended. Mr Jack Kerr, the Northern Zone Director attended to assist in the discussion of the voting on the remits for the AGM in Hamilton in May. Mr Kerr gave a general run down on the Candidates, as being ‘new’ we did not know many of them. Mr Kerr also promised to arrange that we receive copies of the ‘discount books’ that Whangarei use. These give details of the businesses in the Whanga-rei area that give discounts to Grey Power members. The Trading Table was quite busy, with fresh vegeta-bles and preserves. Bring along any goods or pro-duce that you would like to sell. With so much business relating to the Federation AGM it did not leave much time for mingling and chat-ting but we had a lovely afternoon tea, provided by committee members. Thank you to the members who provided this. Our next meeting will be 27th April. The speaker we have planned for the May meeting will give an oppo-site view to the arguments about Crest’s placing of the turbines in the Kaipara. The May meeting will be on the 25th at 2pm. We will continue to have our meetings on the last Wednesday of the month in the Church Hall at 2pm. Thanks, Joan.

A big thank you to all those who have bought pro-duce into the community house for us to give away over the last weeks. We have had Silver Beet, Pears, Apples, Fejoas Eggs, Cucumbers and Toma-toes to give to families who are struggling. Many families have been blessed to receive goods they simply cannot afford, so thanks again to all who have donated to the community. Last month I said I would like to introduce you to our two counsellors. Some of you will have met Bron-wyn, unfortunately Bronwyn’s husband was posted to Rotorua after she had only been with us for six months. So our two new counsellors are Pauline from Waipu and Sandy from Auckland. Pauline has worked in many different areas over the years including, Elder Care, as a Hospital Technician and teaching Arts and Crafts, which she is teaching at the Community House on Thursday mornings dur-ing term time. Counselling seemed to be the most natural progres-sion for her to work with people in another dimension and she has been a practioner of the Psycohsynthe-sis counselling process for some years. Pauline is now working with us using a variety of counselling skills. Her belief is “that in all of us is an inherent ability to find our own resources to manage our own lives”. Sometimes a little help from outside is all that is needed. Sandy has also joined our team in the last few weeks. She brings with her a life journey with experi-ence and training in Domestic Violence, Facilitation of groups for Teenagers, and has worked with Teen Violence. Sandy has been a Foster Care Parent, and School counsellor, she has worked in the area of Separation, Disability and Grief. Sandy also works in the areas of Anxiety and Depression. Sandy has faith and energy using these with her skills to support peo-ple to grow in the direction they need for them. Sandy has come to us to work 2 days a week she will be available on Thursdays and Fridays. As you can see these two lovely ladies have come to us with a wealth of knowledge and experience, their counselling is fully funded and so do feel free to call 431 9080 for an appointment or call into the Community House between 9am and 3pm Monday to

Friday. Blessings from Denise And the Team

Forget the coffee! There’s a possum in Forget the coffee! There’s a possum in Forget the coffee! There’s a possum in Forget the coffee! There’s a possum in my dunny!my dunny!my dunny!my dunny!

Mid morning....nice hot day. Still a coffee is always re-quired around 10.30 am in the morning or so. Then the crunch of car tyres on the driveway = visitor = my mother getting out of her car with her pyjamas still on. The reason - her dunny door was open. The old dunny which is now a garden shed that holds my mother's pots and garden tools. The thunder box still there but covered up. Still - it's a dunny. As with all long since disused dunnies, sooner or later, it becomes the perfect place for the habitation of nocturnal furry creatures known by the initials R.M.S or Rotten Mar-supial Sods. Also referred to by normal people as Australian Brush-tailed Possum. I made her a cup of tea of course, while she told me about what was sitting above the old dunny door, grey fur stick-ing out in all directions glaring coldly back at the human being still blinking away the night's sleep to commence with diurnal activities - like having breakfast. Breakfast time is not supposed to be interrupted by the spotting of dunny doors mysteriously being left open when the day before it was closed. So there we are, with me forgetting completely about the coffee, in discussion about how we would deal with said RMS in my mother's dunny. She offered to put out the trap. That would be fine, but the thing would only cause damage to the trees and garden, before its greed got the better of it and it ended up in the trap stone cold dead in the morning. Pulling out stiff RMS out of a Timms Trap is at times a mis-sion to extract the thing. A few hard shakes is what it usu-ally takes to yank them out of there. A trap is one solution - but, I had a much better, and more instant solution to dealing with the hairy pest in my mother's dunny. Outside looking on, was of course the Village Idiot dog Simon. He loves to hunt possums...and everything else he can find unfortunately. But..he was the best solution for the hairy sod in the dunny. So my mother went back up to her place locked up her cats while yours truly put the lead on the dog and walked up the hill in the wake of her departure.

Get up there - look in the dunny - no possum? Dog how-ever was on the scent sniffing around knocking over gar-den forks and pots to try to figure out where RMS was hid-ing. So I shoved my cattle stick into the bits and pieces. Next thing out flies RMS with grey fur sticking right out, the well sharpened claws out for a rumble in the jungle type conflict - before it sprinted straight up into the rafter. There it sat, hissing, the grey fur now standing out in verti-cal formation. It sure didn't appreciate the hard shove from the cattle stick in its face. By now, dog was trying to nab the RMS. One more shove in the furry face had the thing dropping and dog onto it. Dog ended RMS there and then - much to my mother's relief. One less TB carrying pest on the farm, one less eat-ing our trees and our wildlife. I hate possums - dog just thinks they're dinner. Now where's that coffee I forgot about. - Mad Bush Farm

Hawks Starved of PossessionHawks Starved of PossessionHawks Starved of PossessionHawks Starved of Possession It was difficult to find a parking space at Kaiwaka Sports on Thursday night, 21 April. That can only mean one thing – local derby!

Four weeks into their return to Premier rugby, the Twinkle Tow n Tyre Otamatea Hawks were keen to produce a good performance in front a jovial home crowd that was making full use of the new covered deck and seating.

Wellsford, boasting a number of former Ota-

matea players, aimed to spoil the party and they soon began to assert their dominance. They kicked intelligently, finding space and forcing the Hawks’ back-three to scramble. Their forwards

ran hard at the defensive line and were superior at the set pieces.

Otamatea were pinned in their own half for

much of the first forty minutes with only fleeting forays into their opponent’s red zone, coming away empty-handed each time.

The pressure had to give. Wellsford eventually wore down the defence to score

three tries before the break to take a command-ing lead 0-22.

It could be argued that the locals were in fact

dominating Wellsford in the rucks and mauls, which was an encouraging sign, but the lack of field position and possession, coupled with the weaknesses in the scrums and lineouts would prove to be the overriding factors.

Wellsford seemed to go up a gear in the sec-

ond half. They cleared the rucks more efficiently, which prevented Ota from disrupting their ball and they used their straight-running forwards to gain momentum.

The Hawks battled on and began to get a little

more possession, which resulted in two or three back line moves of substance, but still no real threat to Wellsford. Finally, in a rare push inside the visitor’s 22, the Hawks found some continuity and centre Lincoln Phillips muscled his way over, giving the local fans something to cheer about.

But it was all too little too late as Wellsford

added 29 points in the second forty including a brace to former Otamatea player Cole Campbell. Two tries in the final three minutes blew the score out, perhaps somewhat unfairly for the Hawks, to 7-51.

The Bs welcomed back some old heads who

added some venom, but lacked the lung ca-pacity to compete for the full eighty. Wellsford were ahead 0-10 at half time, but sped the game up in the second half to outstrip Ota-matea 0-53.
