Impossible paintings
Maurits Escher
Maurits Cornelis Escher(1898- 1972)
Maurits Cornelis Escher was a
famous graphic artist. He was born on
June, 17th, 1898 in the family of an
engineer. In 1919 he went to School
of architecture and decorative arts in
Haarlem, but he left it and started
drawing. During his life he travelled in
Europe a lot and painted his great
impossible works.
Up and down
He painted ordinary things in
fantastic and abstract way. For
example you can’t see such stairs in
real life and warriors don’t have a
chance to go up or down using it.
They have to go round.
FallsIt is considered to be one of the
best works by Escher. The falls is
painted as a perpetual motion
machine. The towers seem to be the
same hight but one of them has got
three floors and the other has got
only two floors.
A hand with a mirror sphere
It represents a self-portrait of the artist in an extraordinary way.
Lizards
The mosaic becomes alive. Some lizards appear, they move, live and return back.
He had many experiments with shapes, shadows. He was the master of illusion.
Day and night
Fish and birds
Look at it and say if the lines are parallel.
Nowadays there are a lot of artists who paint illusions. The illusion “Walls” by Richard Gregory can be seen in Bristol.
Impossible cube
What is wrong in the cube?
Where is the door opened inside or outside?
Look at the circles. They seem to be rotating. But they are immovable.
What is there in the painting? Can you see a baby in the painting?
What is the man dreaming about?
